Checkpoint Charlie

This time we meet at the Berlin Wall in the American Sector. You donâ€™t need a passport to cross this border, only a bicycle. From here we tour a divided city and try to evade the Stasi (East German Secret Police) who enforce the doctrine of the ruling automobile class. Failure to halt at every stop sign is a crime against the Republic. It must be harshly punished. It could lead to more people riding bicycles, who yield to red lights, then take whole lanes of traffic thus the eventual erosion of a car-centric ideology. Next thing you know running down a cyclist might even be viewed as a serious crime rather than a minor traffic infraction. Then the great immaterial wall that stands firm in defense of car culture runs the risk of coming downâ€¦â€¦.. just as it did in Berlin, 25 years ago.

About the ride:

Itâ€™s a 20 mile slow paced mostly flat ride with music, two stops and finishes back at the wall. At the beginning of the ride Iâ€™ll take bicycle portraits at the Berlin Wall for all who want them. The pictures will be posted on my website where they will be available for download. At the first stop we screen with a projector a movie featuring some of the group ride photographs that Iâ€™ve taken. At the second stop youâ€™ll have a chance to see the pictures taken at the beginning of the ride.

Where/ When

5900 Wilshire Blvd across the street from the LACMA Urban Light Project

Friday December 5th 2014

Meet at 7:30 and roll at 8:30ish after completion of the photo session.

What to bring:

A working bicycle, spares tubes, front and back bike lights, your friends, whatever you want to consume and a decent attitude.
