Meet at L.A.'s Union Station at 6:00 pm
Roll out at 7:00 pm
reply
How long do you think it will taske to finish?
BWiize06.29.10 - 3:27 pm
reply
I rolled in with the last riders on the last 2 D.C.'s.
Elapsed time was 9 Hrs. 55 min. and 9 hrs.50 min.
We're a pretty consistent bunch, no matter how hard we try to do it faster.
TITS (that's Time In The Saddle) is about 6.5 hours. The rest is eating and other rest stops/regrouping.

We'll be in the saddle for about 6 and a half hours. The rest is eating and fixing flats.
Based on the last 7 D.C.'s anyway.
Due to the down time and lack of major climbs, this is about the easiest way to ride 100 miles that I have done.

it won't be like a superfast considering the will be a lot of peeps who provably have not ridden that many miles at once. My guess is they keep the previous route. If so the it is mostly flat, all rivertrails, and just heluva lot of fun. Every one sticks together last thing you want is a run in with a crack head on the san gabriel river trail @ 2 am. Or come face to face with a "car" at coming towards you on the LA river trail. Haha good times.

The DC VIII rout is a variation of the "traditional" route.
No ridah left behind, but we like to keep it lively, 15-18 mph mostly.
Route slips will be handed out at the start.
Spoke cards at the end.

Really good questions being asked...
The following information should be of help for those who are undecided.
We Meet & Start at the Alameda side entrance of Union Station
There will be a 7Eleven break at about the 18 mile mark.
There will be a Ralphs lunch break at about the 44 mile mark.
The 3rd and final break will be in Long Beach and will be decided upon our arrival time. My guess is that it will be 7Eleven.
We will End at the Denny's, directly behind Union Station, for a post ride breakfast.
There will be a point of no return in which we will be fully self dependent for 30 miles. It's actually the best part of the ride.
There will be 2 Bailout points before the "Point of no Return" for those who may feel they want to save it for DC9.

I’ll be riding fixed if I go! Sounds like a fun time but I haven’t been on a bike in a while and need physical therapy on my knee and wrist I don’t want to fuck it up even more. Consider riding free-wheel if you don’t have a geared bike – at least you can coast for a bit.

yeah, i mean, my boyfriend and i ride nothing but fixed (cuz i cant afford another bike, not because i ride strictly fixed) so i wouldn't have the choice.. i have no freewheel cog on my flip flop.. We may do this one, if not this one, then definitely the next one.
Kakihara, if you need conditioning, check out THE DAME'S RIDE (sorry for the free advertising :D) It's an all ladies ride that I just started. Slow pace, easy routes, and we'll get progressively faster as time goes on!

I think I'll head out to this. Are the bike paths the same one would ride for the LA River Century that was run this past June. If so, I am there.
I was looking at the Gold Line info for this weekend, and the first train leaves the station at 3:40 am. Will we be done too early or just about that time due to stops and eating at Denny's afterwards?
Thanks, I should see you guys and gals there.

DC8 was ubelievably amazing.
It appears that 38 started and 23-25 finished. By far the largest DC turn out to date. Creative thing will have better stats. The weather was amazing, the moon was full and bright and my hat goes off to those that braved the few usual mishaps like flat tires, a chain pop, a bag left at ralphs, and I don't think it's ever happened(can't recall) but 1 crash with no injury and no bike damage. Congrats and thanks for making this ride a truly wonderful Dark Century VIII.
Leslie, thanks for your dedication to making the spoke card and your dedication to making this ride as safe and amazing as possible, despite those who feel inclined to say stupid things like "this ride has been hijacked".
It was a pleasure helping you Leslie and despite the early drama, i'm glad you decided to continue doing the Dark Century ride that Tern gave to you when he moved to another state. you are a class act and I hope to ride with you again on a 100 mile ride at night.

Vocal, safe, cooperative, teamwork, and camaraderie were all present, making this Century the most fun Century I have done, to date. Wayne, and Leslie, You two complete this ride. GRRRREAT JOB!!!! THat route was made to be a route. Perfection.

That was fun! I had a great time in spite of my knee going out around mile 70. Sorry for not calling you guys to tell you to just go on (though of course it was swell of you all to wait). Slowly crawling back up Alameda as the sky was getting light was a surprisingly peaceful way to end a hundred-mile ride.
Thanks, Wayne and Leslie!

Oh man… after 100 miles I really didn’t give a fuck about anything – even eating at Denny’s. Still I took the “safer” route and ordered French fries with extra French fries(which were supposed to be hash browns). Glad you’re ok man… take it easy on that knee for a while. Really, you don’t want to fuck it up and not be able to ride at all! My knees were feeling from mile 80-90 but once I re-grouped and rode the last 10 miles with the main group I felt great again!
