Electric Bike Conversion?

So my pops is turning 65 this year and hasn't ridden a bike in over 20 years. He's got his heart set on getting an E-bike, but when I look at the prices they are $1000 or higher. I was wondering if any of ya'lls could help me in the right direction of making an electric bike hybrid conversion. I've looked up the videos on youtube but I learn better when it's hands on/working one on one with some one. Not to mention that some of those kits are practically the same price as the already made bike.

just buy one of those little gas engines they sell on craigslist for like $150 a pop.

I saw a dude riding a bike with the gas engine and he looked like he was having fun. They are loud as hell thought.
Ebikes have always seemed like an enigma. Seems like the technology, price and quality should be better.

A gas bike isn't ELECTRIC... Gasoline powered would sorta defeat the purpose.
@Foldie: I totally agree! Although since I've been shopping around I've seen lots of cool bikes but I dunno much, hence the thread.

this is what I own and it works great. I've had it for 10 years and it still works.

2 hours of charge I can go 20 miles on flat at average of 12 mph. Its simply a throttle button and you only need to use it when you need it.

I would go to http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/power-assist/ There's over 2500 members that cover everything from retail to homemade ebikes. Do your homework before you buy is always good advice.

If you've got an emergency mechanical woe that isn't necessarily affecting the movement of the wheels(ie., chain break, BB bust, crank arms not staying put) then this would be a good way to limp back to the house or car.

I would say it takes some experience. but if you follow directions it takes a good hour.
I don't know about the new version. I would say it's worth it if you are a commuter. Handles well in the rain too.

It says it's a bolt on hub, so you don't have to rebuild a back wheel, right?
