Best Saddle

What would you say is the best overall saddle? A saddle that will feel good for five minutes or for fifty five? A saddle you can sit on for sixty miles and still be happy? Is it a Brooks? Selle Itallia? Fizik?
I'm looking around for a new saddle and don't want to get measured or anything, just want to buy something I know I'll be happy with.

i think a nice pair of padded lycra short will make most saddles fairly comfortable. i have a pretty uncomfortable saddle but wearing lycra made it all better

I mean, it's either invest in expensive lycra or an expensive saddle. The saddle will stay on the bike, whereas the lycra won't... I can't wear it everywhere all day, I'm going to wash it eventually, etc.

OR invest in both but I don't really have half a grand right now. Maybe eventually.

my point being is that in my opinion its a combination of both.

There is no best saddle. You have to find the best one for you. When you find it, you'll know. My favorite saddle is the Selle San Marco Regal. I also like the Selle Italia Turbo and older style Flite saddles. I'm sure the Brooks saddles are great, but I already know what works for me and I'm too stubborn to try anything new.

I've been cycling for 23 years and have delt with many uncomfortable saddles by wearing padded cycling shorts most of the time.
I recently got a Brooks B17 and put it on my single speed.
It is the most comfortable seat I've ever cycled on, by a country mile.
The Brooks weighs about 4 times as much as the old seat I replaced, but my butt doesn't care!
They say the B17 get more comfortable after about 300 miles, but mine was sweet from the get go.
I got mine from Amazon for $85 including shipping. MSRP is $120

this could help you decide... you can also test ride most fizik and selle saddles from bike shops.

For a no lycra option, I would say go with a well worn Brooks.

Have been very happy with my Specialized BG Sonoma.
Wheel World is pretty cool, in that they'll let you test a saddle and trade it in for something else until you find one that works for you, so you might want to see if your local bike shop will do that.

Another vote here for the Brooks. It does take a little break in time. I soaked mine in motor oil for 12 hours before I put it on the bike and that helped quite a bit. It's a little pricey but you'll save plenty by not buying padded undies. Good luck!

I'll have to go down there and check that place out too.
Last thing I need to do is shell out big bucks for a supposedly comfy saddle just to find out it was worst than the last one and they won't take it back.

all our butts are different and you don't need bike shorts to make a saddle feel good.
I'm happy with the Nashbar GR2

you can check out Specialized saddles also...they have come out with saddles with different widths, for different pelvic/bone sizes...

Damn you've been riding as long as I've been alive! I can't wait until I get like that. I just picked up an old Ideale leather saddle (no money for a Brooks) to try so shut my mouth...

I'd say it also depends on the mileage...for an ALC ride will a Brooks work? Not sure...I was doing just fine the last two years on a women specific saddle from performance. I'm on a Selle Italia right now...going to switch back to a different women's specific saddle...Many shops have "testers" to use on your bike. Cynergy has a sensor you sit on to measure the distance between your "sit" bones...that can make a big difference for some of us. Try stuff out...buy once.

i can't say i've tried a million saddles, but i love my brooks swift.
comfy, broke in quick, has survived multiple rain storms, and the second it looks anything but brand new, a smear of proofide brings it back to normal.
and, i mean, its sexiness goes without saying. i feel like i'm making it with a classy broad every time my ass lays upon it.

brooks b17s was comfortable right out of the box. i really like it.
chynna, from my experience, its worth the 2 minutes to go into a bike shop and get measured. esp with high end saddles, bc like specialized and brooks etc come in different sizes and it makes a world of difference in comfort. i was told that get measured for the distance between your sitbones and then add 20 mm. [ for example i measured at 140. so add 20 and it was 160, which was perfect for the 177 mm b17s, so i wasn't sitting on the metal rivets at all. ]
