The schedule for the Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series was released this evening. Beginning on July 8th and ending September 2nd, the Thursday evening concerts start at 7 pm and are free to the public.

Ride to the concert starting at NoHo subway station, time to be announced, riding aprox 15 mi to the venue and back. We will make stops at subway stations along the way to meet up with other riders.
I don't know if I will lead every ride during the summer, but I will post the FREE Concert Ride every week and anyone may volunteer to lead and provide music.
2nd off Konono Nº 1 is way fucking cooler than description "Congolese Trance Dance-tronica"
This is a Congolese street music collective that has been performing together for at least 40 years. The mythology goes that they had to make their own pickups for their traditional likembés so they could be heard over the din of Kinshasa traffic. Many of their instruments are made from stuff they salvaged from junkyards.
Its my understanding that the music they play is composed mainly of traditional rythmns that are 100s of years old.
So yes is it Congolese, It is trance inducing, it does make you want to dance yoru ass off, and it is electronic. But they are way more interesting than "Congolese Trance Dance-tronica" IMHO.
This is a rare opportunity too!
To my knowledge they have only played L.A. 2 times before. And the second show was sort of an industry showcase that was sadly way under-promoted. I expect this to be a pretty triumphant return for them as the energy for this free show shoulf be off the charts.
I'm happy you like it! I just cut and paste what the City of Santa Monica wrote about the group. I was hoping that we would have ride music 'in the spirit of' of the band featured that evening. Maybe you could help organize that?
The last show in Sept, being the big blow-out, Beatles/Led Zepplen. It would be great to ride up to the show with music by the Beatles and LZ, etc.
My family and I have been going to these for a couple of decades and I thought it would be great to make a ride out of it. It's a lot of fun, people bring huge blankets and candle votives and picnics and they lay them out on the water and watch on the big screen mounted on the side of the pier, or, they sit in front of the band on the pier in beach chairs or towels and there is usually a dance area too.

I don't have a sound system, but I am happy to help "curate" and upload tracks to my server if somebody is dragging sound along.
Konono Nº1 is way off on their own tip. But thanks to the fact that most percussive music has roots in africa there is tons of stuff their music evokes, I'm happy to share what I have.

Sharing your music with someone with a sound system sounds ideal! the ride music does not have to match exactly, just in the spirit of the concert we are riding too. I don't have a sound system set up either, but I have a big speaker, if that helps.
I'm not sure how to make it work from an mp3 player, I have a non-apple one and I lost the software to it years ago so I can't upload new stuff.
i'm sure as the date draws near we can work out out ... lots of sound systems in the community and this sounds like an epic ride.
speaking of riding.
I live in east hollywood, so I would be likely to meet up with the ride in hollywood (hollywood and highland?). Its against my DNA to take the train under the hill just so I can ride back over it. ;-)

Absolutely. That sounds great, I planned to stop at the Hollywood/Highland station to let people from 'over the hill' cycle, subway or take trains to the ride before heading out to the pier.

I have a baby sound system that consists of a guitar amp. It doesn't sound AMAZING, but it works, especially for smaller groups. I also have an iPod. I don't know how those Boston speakers work, (are they battery powered?) but I'm totally up for bringing my speaker for the ride.
You're idea sounds better. My speakers are not battery powered, they were part of an older stereo system, you wound wires around a screw in the back to connect them to a tuner.
818 Meet up to ride: 4:15 p/m @ NoHo Redline Station.
Depart on subway to Highland/Hollywood Station : 4:45 p.m
Meet up with 213/310 riders at Hollywood/Highland Redline Station: 5:00 p.m.
Depart Hollywood/Highland to Santa Monica Pier: 5:15 p.m. SHARP!!!
We will meet at NoHo Redline Station @ 4:15 p.m. and take the train over to Highland/Hollywood Station @ 4:45 p.m. to meet up with other riders before traveling down Colorado @ 5:15 p.m. for aprox 11.5 miles to the first free concert of the free Twilight Summer Concert Series at the Santa Monica Pier.
The show starts at 7:00 and it's good to be there a little early to get a good seat and some refreshments. They sale beer on the bar on the pier.

Can I make 2 suggestions about the ride listing.
1) Hollywood Highland is actually in (323) area code.
2) I think you would get more people if you mention Konono No.1 in the title of the ride listing.
I'm only mentioning it because, I was looking for for the ride and breezing through the listings and it took me a double take before i found it.
If you need a point person to help out at hollywood and highland. Let me know.

You're welcome, I hope you can make it! =) It would be great to have a rider in front who could hold back the faster riders so they don't get separated from the ride at turns. I can't catch up to fast riders on my beach cruiser. So any support would be greatly appreciated. We will be making a bunch of turns to go in the shortest distance possible to the pier.
I hope to be there too.
Its going to be a challenge for me to make the start time.
If you are on a Cruiser then you should be setting the pace of the ride.
If people ride off the front, my suggestion is to let them go.
They will stop or make moves to find the ride, when they realize the ride is not with them.
I find that chasing after fast riders only speeds up / and spreads out the ride, as other riders see a "leader" who is speeding to "catch up" to riders who are riding off the front and often follow suit.
Talk to people at the beginning about the pace you are going for.
Stop at yellow lights, slow down when approaching a "stale" green and communicate clearly and with authority.
ie. "SLOWING" "STOPPING" that tells everybody that your are not telling any body what to do, your are informing everybody what you are doing and by extension what the group is doing.
These things will help keep the group tighter.
It only takes a few people riding tightly together to command the road.
So if the group splits up don't fret. Some people like to do their own thing, you can't control them.
From my experience trying to slow down zippy riders is often a lot of frustrating work that leads nowhere. Its easier & more conscientious to keep your thoughts on the slowest riders. Its easy for fast riders to stop and wonder where the ride is. It can be exhausting and frustrating for slower riders to try and catch up to a mass that has forgotten them in the chase to catch up to and "slow down" faster riders.
Don't worry about faster riders missing a turn or getting lost.
- its their own fault
- if they ride fast they are probably comfortable riding alone.
Its the slower riders that need our attention.
- they are out of sight out of mind (unless you have eyes in the back of your head)
- if they catch a flat or get stuck at a light they may have no way of communicating forward to the rest of the group.

Yeah, the start time is early,however, the pier is jam packed for these concerts, and since the City of Santa Monica is putting them on they generally start and end right on schedule. I would rather be there a bit early and get settled in then get there too late to get close to the stage.
There is a drug store a block from the pier, so if we do get there a little early riders can go there for some goodies if they don't want to pay higher prices on the pier.
Maybe I should post the route so that riders can catch up or meet up en route to the venue?
Re: early start time, some companies will let you break up vacation/sick time by the hour. So you can request to take one hour of vacation/sick time to leave work a bit early. Hope that helps. :)
Actually, I do have work-related things that I have to commute for on a regular basis. I guess no one is entirely free to work from home 100% of the time. I just meant I make my own hours.
Actually, it's easiest for me to meet at hollywood/highland because I live off the Goldine. At any rate, it's smarter if I exit along the purple line so I can meet you guys on Venice, but that's okay. Can someone send me the music so I can put it on my ipod?

It was rad of course.
We were a small group that got 20% bigger when coldcut joined us for the ride home.
The music was great. The crowd was really diverse and many of us danced and shook the entire time.
They have a free bike valet there, which is comforting to those of us who had baggage on our bikes.
The ride home was nice.
Navagating the Santa Monica Blvd. Death Strip was made 1000% better by haveing a group of people to ride with.

The ride Down Santa Monica on the way there was great, on the way back there was a section for about a mile after Beverly Hills that was dark due to lack of street lights and the cars were traveling fast but it's perfectly doable with two or more riders. Actually, most of Santa Monica on the way back had a designated bike lane so that was nice.
I will post the ride next week with two different start times, one for people who want to get there about 10 minets early to valet their bikes and get good seat, and one that starts about 30 minets later for people who don't mind getting there right when the music starts and being in standing room only.
Along the vein of free concerts, there are also free shows at The Bandshell (in W.LA)all summer long.
My friend Cinq Finatra is going to play there. Super rad.
So far there is no ride leader for this ride tonight. If you wish to attend and it's just one or two people then please see the route to get there posted on this tread.
To return I would only change one thing; take Santa Monica all the way to Fairfax, go Left up to Hollywood, go Right to Hollywood/Highland Redline station.
I will lead the one in two week featuring Bollywood musical artists from India!
Don't do it on the Pier, they'll hunt you down like a dog. If you want to drink chill on the beach on the south side of the Pier. You still cant drink there, but you can see the cops coming and have plenty of time to hide your stuff
Sorry for the late reply. Well, they sale beer on the Pier so I can't imagine why you could not drink it there too. But I'm not familiar with SM laws. I know there are tons of people on blankets with votive candles and picnicks and bottles of wine on the sand next to the pier, so they can see the stage and be by the water.
I think it's just a matter of common sense, they probably don't want to see a bunch of out of control guys drinking in the open acting foolish, but if you're settled in on a blanket with a picnic then I don't think you would be bothered.

Yes, I will be on the green beach cruiser, I will be there in ten minets or so. If you miss me then go to Hollywood/Redline station, we won't leave there til. 5:45.

During the concert I will be along the rail that faces the bike valet, like last time. I may be closer or in the same place or someplace in between, but I will be near that rail.
Last time they added a beer/wine garden on the pier at the rear of the audience, it was not there before, so you won't have to sit behind the stage in the bar if you want a drink.
