use correct hand signals

I went on a big ride, and was very confused when several people were using a right hand turn signal to indicate slowing or stopping.
Please use correct signals.

except that you can't really see the stopping sign pointed down in a group unless it's right in front of you.
on a bike it's perfectly acceptable to use the right arm extended as a right turn signal. the arm/fist up just makes sense as stop and is pretty much the standard on rides.

you know, i'll use my hand signals in traffic
but i really don't feel the cars have a clue at all what i'm doing, i get the feeling that they just think, "wtf is that guy on the bike doing, slow down we don't want to murder somebody"
i suppose it wouldn't be too surprising, the majority of drivers seem to have no idea what their own turn signals are for

OK, so I've often seen a closed-fist-raised-above-the-head signal used on rides to indicate stopping (rather than merely slowing). I've seen it used so often, in fact, that I started using it myself, assuming that it was just a standard signal for riding. Of course, when I look this up online, the only reference I can find is to military hand signals that mostly just
cause confusion and get people killed, so....
I think that the raised-fist signal is an easy way to communicate a stop to people further back in the pack who can't see a lowered hand signal. Or rather it
would be, if everyone understood it as having the same meaning. That's the problem with signals; everyone needs to agree on what they mean.

No-one except well informed cyclists know what these signals mean.
Good luck getting everyone to understand this.
Better to just point and shout then to try and teach these Neanderthals what the correct signals are.

tbqh, i sometimes (usually) will stick out my right arm to inidicate a right turn.
perhaps in a smaller group more people would know the actual right turn signal, but in something like CM, the right arm is def safer (no?)
i figure function over tradition?? idk
i'll try using the real right signal.

The official right turn signal just will not work with most peeps on the ride. Signaling with the right hand is acceptable. I believe it's even in the CVC. If you guys haven't figured it out already, the left hand is used for all the signals cause they assume everyone on the road is driving a car.
The signal I like to use in a big ride if someone goes down in front of me is a raised hand. Mostly it's to get everyones attention, and hopefully slow down.

Since when? I noticed the weird hand signals on Friday too.
My response is NO, you use proper hand signals, period. Just because "everyone" is doing it, which is not true, doesn't mean it's right.
Use PROPER hand signals only, please.

When I took the Urban Cyclist Survival Class with the lacbc, They said signaling with your left hand for left, and right hand for right is the new and proper way to signal, and that teacher was trained with the league of American Bicyclists.
I think that method is better for a car (with signals broken) where nobody would ever see you with your hand extended across the inside of your car.
Its old school.

The meaning of the extended left or right arm is immediately understandable by anyone who sees it (A), whether they've been educated in proper road signals or not. The meaning of the raised left arm for a right turn is understandable to people who are educated in proper road signals (B) and probably totally confusing to those who are not (C). The meaning of the raised fist is only understandable to those who have seen it used repeatedly and made the association with stopping (D).
A > B > C > D
The meaning of someone yelling "stopping!" is immediately understandable to anyone who speaks English and does not have headphones or large gobs of wax clogging their ears.
The meaning of what I have just written is muddied by awkward grammar and convoluted sentence structure.
Lesson: Point

Well yeah, I thought people would assume one is yelling to stop in the moment of panic. Even though ridazz more than 30 feet back are probably not going to hear you.
So yeah, C+D is greater than either one alone.
