Hi everyone. I was hit by a car about two hours ago. My bike is fine. I could be better. I probably won't be able to ride for atleast a month.
I know that this is short notice, but if anyone would like to come over to my house, I will cook some food, we can hang out, watch movies. Whatever. I just have no car and I can't ride and I am really sad and will miss all of you. Please call me for directions. Or just to talk to me.

I was crossing an intersection. I looked both ways, it was clear. As I got to the middle of the road, a woman came out of nowhere (I guess I just didn't see her) and broadsided me. Up in the air. Down on the ground. Made sure not to hit my head. Sustained contusions to my left knee. Swelled up like a grapefruit. Also had a lot of pain in my hip. 3 cop cars and a paramedic came. I refused to go to the hospital. I didn't get her info. She looked pretty poor and I didn't feel like ruining anyone's life today.

The knee is my main concern, though I am not a doctor, swelling up like a grapefruit is not good. You may have gotten lucky and not damaged the ACL or the MCL, but the swelling will put stress on the whole region.
So I suggest you elevate the leg and ice the knee every hour. Also get the police report so you can contact the woman's insurance. The insurance pays for injuries. I believe you have a three month window to file an insurance claim. Do this just in case the injuries need medical attention.
The big issue is, will you be able to walk or limp on your knee tomorrow. You are one of the most photogenic riders around.
We will miss your interesting expressions on film.

chlo... as a person who just had to spend a few months off riding due to a severe knee injury, i can tell you that Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE) are the most important things you can do for you knee to help it heal.
REST: let it rest. it's gotta heal. don't push it till you really get the swelling down, and even then, ease back into it.
ICE: ice is incredibly helpful. get ice on it for half an hour four times a day. trust me on this.
COMPRESSION: get a bandage around it. it shouldn't be tight, but the fact that it's there as you move around will help fluid drain. as fluid drains, the swelling goes down, and it will become less painful.
ELEVATION: keep that leg HORIZONTAL. this also helps fluid drain out of it.
Also, pop some ibuprofen to make it feel more bearable.
Btw, I'm not far from you, I'd be happy to come over and tell you stupid stories until you laugh your head off.

definately get that knee looked at by any free hospital clinic because some injuries are serious and can be permanent.

THANK YOU everyone who stopped by tonight / sent well wishes through cellulars and internets.
While it breaks my heart that I cannot ride, it is the concern everyone showed me today that reminds me why MR is the greatest group of people I could ever associate myself with.
Plenty more days of me being a cripple = plenty more days for CRUTCH MOB partying at my place.

this makes my heart ache. I didn't know about this because I was out riding all day yesterday but if I had, I would have taken a different route back from long beach to visit you earlier. Very sorry to hear this, but glad it's not more serious.
Along with the R.I.C.E. advice (which is very good..)
Keep the scrapes clean and use neosporin.
It will be way better without infection!

That was nice of you not to bother getting the woman's info but I hope now in retrospect you see if she was insured and go through the normal process. It sounds like you might be seeing an orthopede for the knee at some point and unless you have a platinum plated health insurance plan, you're going to pay some serious money out of pocket. It ought to be from the woman's insurance company.
And of course, I'm so sorry about your accident and hope you recover quickly and fully.

Thank you for the advice. I don't think my parents are going to let me see a doctor until Monday-ish. My dad told his lawyer-friend about all this, I suppose they will talk more about it later. For now, the swelling went down considerably and I can sort of limp around but it takes a long time to get anywhere. If I can find my camera, I'll be sure to post some hooray for crashes photos.
You guys are all great. Thank you for your support, there is no way I could ever feel lonely with everyone checking up on me =]

I had the same thing happen to me as well but you will get better soon. were you alone when this happened? don't worry her insurence will pay for damages. if you need help with the legal stuff i have a great lawyer who is helping me right now for my hit as well.

I am alright. I took the wrapping off today and the swelling went down a lot. My hip is not bothering me too much anymore, it's mostly all in my knee. Bike had not a scratch on it. Beater bike FTW! I was alone but I was in Mar Vista by a coffee shop I frequent daily so no less than 30 people I knew ran up to me and all the cops were laughing and asked me if I knew everyone in Mar Vista or what. Thank you for offering your help. I guess I am going to think about the legal stuff for a bit but I am glad to have your help since you have been through this too.
I also hope that you are doing well, how's your bike?

So you ran a red light through 8 lanes of Venice Blvd traffic after coming down the Grand View hill because you didn't feel like stopping because you ride a fixie with no brakes? No wonder you didn't get her info. Her insurance company won't be paying you anything!

A bunch of us from the Candy Rocketship ride swung by Chloe's place at 3am yesterday to wake her up. She kicked us out at 4am cuz her mom was going to wake up. I brought beer. Chloe's knee actually doesn't look that bad at all, if the swelling was initially really as big as a grapefruit and it went away so fast then everything will probably be ok. She was also walking around on it, which is another very encouraging sign.

It sucks to hear what happened. Like Ben and others said... ice that sucker up and get lots of rest. We miss you on the rides but get that rest and don't try to force yourself too much.

aw guys. thanks you for coming to visit and i am sorry i was a little stressed out. i had been worried about what my friend had told me earlier that night, but after i saw everyone else's reaction to how my knee looks, i am in good spirits. x-rays tomorrow to confirm that good feeling. you guys are great.
