I THINK IT'S OK TO ASK FOR MONEY, BUT SERIOUSLY, I DO NOT WANT TO BE BOTHERED, THIS TIME AROUND, ASKING 5 TIMES A RIDE REALLY ANNOYED ME, SO RESPECT MY WISHES, DO NOT BOTHER ME.
I KNOW THAT SOME OF YOU GUYZ THINK I'M A DICK, FOR SAYING THIS, BUT HEY, HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF I BEGGED FOR FOOD, POT OR BEER, EVERY TIME, YOU SAW ME?
WOULD YOU NOT TELL ME TO GET A JOB???
I AM FULLY AWARE ABOUT THE AIDS EPIDEMIC THAT NEEDS TO BE ERADICATED.

luckily i work somewhere were folks earn a lot...but with the financial crisis going on, i'm not sure if it will be easy at this time..

Yeah, raising the $2500 was by far the hardest part of the ride, and this year the minimum is $3000.
I agree that there was way too much pressure last year on ridazz to donate... considering many of us are unemployed or in school... it was like squeezing blood from a stone. Personally all of my donations came from friends, family, old classmates, and coworkers.
We had a few good fund raisers for the community, like the All City Bike Wash... and selling I (bike) LA t-shirts... but I agree it kind of got out of hand near the end, with ridazz asking ridazz for money, and hopefully this year we can direct our fund raising efforts a little more outward from the community. We'd probably have a lot more success. But we will still need all the <3 and support that we got from you lovely people this year!

barmp!
c'mon now, who's in??? The ALC kick-off training ride is next weekend in Griffith Park! That was the ride I met my first midnight ridazz on!
if you're even remotely interested in possibly toying with the idea of maybe riding in AIDS LifeCycle 8 then you should definitely come out to this ride! you'll get a feel for all the positive energy, support, excitement... and you'll also get to see what it feels like to ride with RULES. That's right, stopping at every stop sign, signaling, you name it.
They will be offering discount registration fees at this event ($55 instead of $75), but you will not be pressured to register yet if you don't want to. (I don't think I officially registered until late November last year.) They usually have a raffle for really expensive bikes and gear too.
So come try it out! (I'll post specific details later, when I've got them on me.)

i talked to the kid from santa barbara who did it fixed with dual aerospokes or something like that. he said that you are required to have a front brake, but youre not required to use it, so you can skid stop to your hearts content.
if you plan on doing it fixed, ditch you converse/vans and your double straps and get some nice clipless pedals. your feet will love you.
i would say that having bullhorns would be better than drops for long distance like that. whatever you do, dont do it with some crummy riser bars.

everyone rides every single day. i dont know how you could think that you get to pick and choose which days you want to ride. i guess unless youre injured or something.
ruinedbyidiots10.20.08 - 10:50 am

the ride is 7 days long. and it's totally supported throughout the WHOLE ride. if, for some reason, you can't ride for a part of the day or the whole day, they will give you (and your bike) a ride to camp.
ALC "mobile city" - ALC provides HOT breakfast, lunch, HOT dinner, snacks, and beverages every day, HOT showers and tents that you put up yourself, of course. entertainment is provided each night...lights out by 9pm. people start getting up as early as 5 am to get their riding day started. if you're a "roadie" (aka volunteer), then they get up at various times. the earliest roadies usually get up around 2-3 am to get breakfast started for 3000+ people (2500 ridazz, 500 roadies, and ALC staff). They even have VOLUNTEER bike techs to help you out. Parts are an additional cost, but their labor is FREE. Massage therapists and medical staff is available.
YOU - you provide your bike, helmet, water bottles and ride for 7 days.
Here's a basic rundown of my day:
Up around 5 am, put on sweats, socks and shoes. Go wait in porta-potty line, pee & brush teeth. Go to tent, get ready for the day, pack my gear and tent, take stuff to the gear trucks, eat breakfast, thinking about stretching, and on the road by 6:30...7...7:30... the latest you can get on the road is 8am or they will take you to camp. Ride...Ride...Ride... Rest stops with food and water are usually every 12-15 miles. Pee. Hydrate. Ride. (Repeat numerous times until you get to camp. Somewhere in between, there's lunch and infamous stops in the cities you ride through.) Arrive in camp. Put bike in bike parking. Get gear and tent from truck (if tent partner didn't get it already), set up tent, get in line for shower...shower, eat dinner...chill...in sleeping bag by 9pm. Repeat for 6 more days.
Now just imagine doing this ride with 2,499 other ridazz... it will be the best experience you've ever had.
(btw...I'm not riding this year, but I am going to be roadie. I'm also a massage therapist...so if you do the ride, hit me up and i'll make you feel gooooooooooooooooood.)

we will train hard... last year we trained almost too hard! Danny kept insisting "these hills are NOTHING compared to ALC" scaring the crap out of us... but I'm glad... cuz it made ALC a breeze! (well, not a breeze, but not that terrible.)
Anyone can do this, you just need to train with us. When I started training last year, I didn't even have a road bike. My first 24 mile ride (the ALC kick off ride) nearly killed me. But, I was loving hills in no time, and getting stoked about centuries.
Might I add that not only is this SO MUCH FUN, but you'll probably be in the best shape of your life. AND you'll be riding so much that it is not only okay, but strongly encouraged that you EAT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING YOU CAN.... TWICE!
Serious nom-nomage.

I will not be able to do the training ride kick off either, but for sure will be joining the team again.
Our training rides were very difficult when it came time to ride. Who would have guessed that I would have been able to ride from SF to LA. It is easier and more fun when you have the support of a team behind you.
I was able to raise $2,500 unemployed last year, if you are really committed anything is possible. Although it is $3000 this year.
If the fundraising or riding scare you but still want to join in our teams fun.. think about being a ROADIE. Because we can't ride without them. No fundraising minimum is required.

Safety on the road was the number one complaint about the MR team last year. Repeatedly, various riders on this visually present team refused to use call outs for passing, or passed someone already over taking someone on ascents and descents, and did not properly stop at stop signs. The situation did get a little better toward LA, though that had to have been because of the warnings from ride staff's awareness. Other people are on this ride and some of them are deaf too. They require a slower approach and keen awareness of their bicycle signs as to not startle them. The hazardous riding that was witnessed and the talk of more than one dinner discussion is something you folks might want to seriously keep in check. I personally witnessed a female black haired rider pass on the left of two riders with no call out . This rider was unbeknownst to her being passed by a car. The wind of the car pushed her a few inches off of her already very dangerously close line to car and other bicycles. This rider caused two other riders to break cadence, slow down, stop, and mentally regroup after being so closely almost bowling balled off the cliff on the right hand side of the road. She didn't look back before passing and gave them no notice. So, if you all are coming back please be aware and comply with the expectations of the ride. The rebellious nature of the spirited MR has no place on this ride, where everyday folks are riding for loved ones lost and to stop losing friends.

raised awareness about HIV in our community,
raised over 56 thousand dollars,
has at least one member living with HIV-AIDS and has lost friends and family to AIDS,
had over 20 riders plus roadies
were invited to come back by the caboose who watched after the last riders of the ride who were having a hard time riding but wanted to finish every day.

I can totally hear what Gabber is saying though and I personally will cop to rude riding on the first day or two where I would just pass people without calling out "on your left." It was a failed combo of getting up late and riding my usual speed which was faster than the majority of the people who also started later.... I realized it was rude and figured out that starting at 6:30am when the ride opens in the morning is the way to go. that's the time for riding fast and it's much more enjoy-able to be out on the open road with very few in front.....
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this ride and hope that next year I can do it. It's basically a giant bicycle camp for adults and EVERYONE I met was completely RAWSOME.
The reason things got better towards LA was that everyone learned the ettiquette and we sincerely did want to get along with everyone.
I hope I can be part of this insanely fun adventure once again! I will know for sure in the next couple months.

For the ACTUAL 545 mile ride from SF to LA I would definitely recommend a road bike... but if you want to do the training ride on whatever you've got, that should be just fine. There are people of all different levels on these rides, so speed is not an issue. Trust.

PLEASE READ THIS if you are thinking about coming along on Saturday because there are some guidelines for this right, which is being organized by the ALC.
First thing you need to know is that helmets are mandatory. You'll find that this is just how all big supported rides tend to go.
Also, you'll need to bring the usual things to support yourself - spare tube, patches, pump, tire levers, water bottle/CamelBak. I think snacks will probably be provided but bring some just in case.
Meeting Place: Griffith Park: (Griffith Park & Crystal Springs Drive) - Look for AIDS/LifeCycle signage.
Meet time: 07:30 am - "All Cyclists MUST arrive in time to sign the Training Ride Waiver and EVERYONE MUST be present for the mandatory safety speech so please plan ahead to arrive on time" - I would even recommend getting there a bit before 7:30 so you have time to find your fellow Ridazz!!!

That would be Bad-ass Lance! Its really not as hard as it seems to raise the funds. Everyone is ultimately responsible for raising their own minimum, but we 7 months to raise that amount right now. ALC provides lots of suggestions and tips for fundraising and ideas to offer ways to raise the dollars. Plus we, as a group put on fundraisers and the $$ are split among those who participate. You can't really count on making your minimum through the group events, but it certainly helps get you there.
Good luck!

We're going to have the best team ever. Max I think did the ALC on a tall bike and now he may be a training ride leader. I biked from SF to LA fixed and I highly recommend a hand brake. ALC requires at least one and that's all you really need so long as your brake isn't falling apart. I have bullhorns and it was a bit uncomfortable on the back and hands but after 3 days you deal and it makes u a stronger rider. I've seen people geared high and low, but most are around 78 gear inches. I would not recommend below 70 because it's a lot of miles. Gear higher and train hills and you'll be fine. I am so looking forward to this, seeing everyone at camp and the 2500 bikes on the road, the amazing vegi food, ... And providing kick ass roadie support to ridazz and riders

Welcome crossbones!
I just sent out an email about the difficult of the route for fixies and thought I should repost here ...
Distance:
Longest day is 105 miles and shortest is about 45. It's broken up with stops every 20 or so miles, and so a lot of vets say it's a bunch of 20 mile rides instead of one 500 mile ride. And the stops are fully stocked and entertaining.
Grade:
Most fixie ridders are flying past people on uphills and flats. the route starts and ends via pch but days 2-5 are inland following the 101, zigzagging over the mountain range. The route is carefully planned so that the hill is in the first 20 miles, followed by a fairly flat day. The hills are not steap or long if you train with tmr, but there are a fet nastly little grinds on detours that last less than 500 feet. The only thing that you should really worry about is the downhill on day 4. It's 12 miles at 8 percent grade, which is why I advise gearing up and learning how to ride hills in a tougher gear.
Misc:
Get 2 bottle cages or a camelback and bottle cuz ud want one for electrolytes and one for water.
Good call on ditching the cages. Jo-mama can tell you converses aren't the best riding shoe. I recommend mtb clips or egg beaters because they do better in the sand and dirt.

I'm very glad this got bumped up. Thanks Tomato.
I'm really really considering this. I sent facebook messages to a few members, and Ben has replied, but I still have some questions. My main concerns are: age limitations (are there any? maybe for liability issues or something?), my bike not being good enough (pretty big concern), and I'm a tiny bit afraid of the riding, but the training doesn't sound too bad with the plan they show on the ALC web page. I wish I had gone to the kick-off ride, but it's okay. I don't think I'll be able to make it tomorrow. I'm staying in tonight, I think I strained my abdominal muscles or something. Hopefully it stops and if so I can do the training tomorrow.

looks like last year's site but it's not updated... all i have is the alc team site that gives you access to our individual pages

http://teammidnightridazz.com is in need of an update, which I think Ben is working on. Currently it is from last years team, and was pretty simple. The link on the MR homepage will need to be updated since it linked directly to our ALC page from last year, and those links break every year when they update the site.

yeah working on it but it's taking a while
we gotta make profile pages for all the ridazz and not everyone has sent me those details yet, so it's a slog
hopefully RB can update the team link in the MR banner above to point to http://tofighthiv.org/goto/midnight-ridazz or http://www.teammidnightridazz.com soon, that'd be dope.
what else.
we're gonna have an easier training ride on saturday. i'm thinking hollywood to redondo and back.
