You can order that stuff directly from 3M and probably take quite a bit of the cost off. I've been using it on my motorcycles for years. A sheet the size of a sheet of paper isn't too terribly expensive.
However, reflectivity does nothing to protect you from a pedestrian stepping out into your path, since peds don't have headlights. I find that the pedestrian factor creates much more danger when riding in a city at night than cars do, since cars have headlights. I can't count the number of times I've been nearly taken out by a pedestrian stepping out from between parked cars when riding home in the dark because I forgot to charge my light or left it at home.

i almost took out some dumbass ped on santa monica last night. I was hauling ass eastbound and this dude steps out from the corner of some side street right in front of me, I swerved around him, missing him by inches... and he had the gall to swear at ME...
