Thread Box:
Anti-gun talk?
Thread started by bentstrider at 11.17.08 - 12:48 pm

So, I was reading a story in the local paper today in regards to, "Gun sales jumping up due to Obama Victory."

Apparently, there seems to be some sort of fear-factor that strict, gun-control measures will be going into place in the near-future.

This get-them-while-they're-hot mentality seems to be working it's way into me.
I currently don't own any guns of my own, but seeing as how many gun-control laws were passed by Dems most of the time, I'm quite fearful of a scenario from that book, "The Turner Diaries".

But, that's just my thought on this issue.

I have a hard time actually sorting out gun rights in my mind. on the one hand I believe that it is our civic duty to keep weapons in order to defend ourselves against agents of power like cops and the military. but I also like the way they do it in the UK where the cops have no guns.

gang members, criminals, ie people who SHOULD NOT have guns will always be able to get guns. That's what being a criminal is all about. You think gangs roll with registered firearms from Big-5??

For awhile, my stepdad and my mom had a pretty big impact on how I lived.

My stepdad came from a family that happened to also have Pacifistic/Quaker views on many things.
My mom wanted to get away from her father, who happened to be a true, "Malaysian" red-neck.

For awhile, they would actually turn off the TV if anything as violent as a Western came on.

Afterward, I retained anti-gun views up until I turned 19, when a couple of friends took me out shooting, with actual firearms.

Since then, I've wanted to get some, but just haven't gotten around to doing so.

I don't want to have an armory, but a Remington 870 police shotgun and, much to Jeff's disapproval, a Colt M1911.

This notion that violence will disappear if guns are banned is a bunch of hokey IMO.

And what about Grandma, or some poor fool in a wheelchair?

If they get banned, people are going to have them anyway.

And like the marijuana laws, gun-ban's will just be another way to burst the seams of the already, disfunctional, pShrink-mandated, prisons.

Stupid simpletons, rushing out and buying guns. If they paid any attention to current affairs, politics, etc, they would realize that today's democrats consider gun control is a loosing issue. The aggravation and political capital it takes to pass new gun laws isn't worth the meager benefits of the laws themselves. And with so many so-called Blue Dog Democrats in Congress, gun control laws dont stand a chance. Nobody is talking about it. I say good riddance. Let them buy guns. I don't own any but I don't want more restrictive laws. But most of all, I don't want it continuing to be an issue that separates "middle America" and the Democratic party.

Guns are silly anyway. If you think your gun is going to protect you from your government, well ask the Branch Davidians how that worked out.

If you think the government is worried about your pathetic little pea-shooters when they have flamethrowers, grenade launchers, stinger missile-armed drone aircraft, tanks, nerve gas, MOABs...if you believe that then you'd better sit down: I have some bad news for you about santa claus.

From Obama's campaign website. The only thing I could find on Guns

Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.
Doesn't sound like there is going to be to much gun control measure coming out of that administration, unless somebody goes shooting something up. As someone said before, it is a non-issue and it would fare well with the single issue gun owners in 2012.

Bents......If you want a couple of guns I would say go buy them.

My only consideration to you would be. Is this gun-control scare, just 'a scare' to where it is artificially raising the price of guns? Although guns are something that usually retain their value, so the price hike might just hold. If gun prices go down, you may be able to recoup your money in the years or so, if you where ever planing to sell them. On the other hand as the economy goes south, you may have people selling things for less then they where worth a few months or years ago. So you might want to wait to purchase them when the economy goes so bad that gun owners are selling all the extra guns they have. (Most gun owners usually have at least four to five guns. If they are really into it, they will have 30-50 guns. )

As what happened with bikes, just as summer as ended.
I said it before, I think that the price of used bikes peaked this summer. Might be that gas prices are going down, and will continue to go down. What happen, did the demand for oil go down? I think it is that the paper that speculators were using is not abundant supply like it was.

Live by the sword and help to contain
The helpless minds of you all
Die by my hand in pools of blood
Clutch yourself as you fall
Mindless tyranny, forgotten victims
Children slaughtered in vain
Raping the maids, in which they serve
Only the words of the Lord

Die by the sword
Die by the sword

Satan watches all of us
Smiles as some do his bidding
Try to escape the grasp of my hand
And your life will no longer exist
Hear our cry, save us from
The Hell in which we live
We turn our heads toward the sky
And listen for the steel

Die by the sword
Die by the sword

Watch as flowers decay
On (the) cryptic life that died
The wisdom of the wizards
Is only a neurtured lie
Black knights of Hell's domain
Walk upon the dead
Satanas sits upon
The blood on which he feeds

Die by the sword
Die by the sword

The Americans learned to fight from the Indians who themselves had little resources but had heart and fought in unconventional ways. The Birttish called the Americans terrorists because they fought "dirty" and rag tag. how quickly a country forgets it's humble beginnings.

I'm not sure the figures above are that accurate. I like the figures on wiki better which would put the US in second on that chart above even though they are from different years. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States

Among developed nations, the U.S. has above-average levels of violent crime and particularly high levels of gun violence and homicide.[162] In 2007, there were 5.6 murders per 100,000 persons,[163] three times the rate in neighboring Canada.[164] The U.S. homicide rate, which decreased by 42% between 1991 and 1999, has been roughly steady since.[163] This high rate of homicide may be related to the country's high rate of gun ownership, in turn associated with gun laws that are permissive compared to those of other developed countries.

I was thinking of the people that support the idea that everyone should carry a gun to "equalize and protect" while I was reading this story. 2 U.S. Troops Killed by Iraqi Soldier

Oh yeah guns in everyone's hands will solve our problems alright!!!

McVeigh didn't use a gun to kill anyone at the Muir building in OK.
if the theory is supposedly correct, it was fertilizer and fuel oil that caused all the deaths. When McVeigh was pulled over for not having a license plate on his car, he informed the patrol officer that he was carrying a loaded pistol and surrended to the officer without incident.

As for the branch-davidians. They where federally licensed gun dealers, who where being investigated for having a kit that turns a semi-automatic weapon to a fully automatic weapon without the proper tax permit for fully automatic weapon. They where allowed to have fully-automatic weapons, they where just suspected of not having the proper taxs in order for them. They used a bogus tip that they where cooking speed to get pass the Posse Comitatus Act to use military vechicles and weapons. There was also a former member who falsely accused the Branch-Davidian of child abuse. All evidence of having a no-knock raid points to the ATF using the raid to justify their "threatened to be shrinking' budget. ATF had there public relations crew with them that day to film the raid.

All the ATF had to do to find out about the fully automatic tax issue was to knock on the door, and ask them to inspect there weapons and see if they had the proper tax permit for the suspected kit.
I have a paper copy of the search warrant that specifies why they where granted the warrant. I will look for it on line. It is a very telling document. If they wanted Koresch specifically, they could have waited for him to come to town (which he did constantly) and two agents could have arrested him.

Try out each one and make sure you are happy with that Colt or see if there is something that you like more. I know that is common advice, the nice thing about purchasing a gun is that you can go the range and rent almost every popular model that is selling at present time.

Like I said with the shotgun, don't cheap out. Get the best one you can afford, you won't lose any money in the investment. I don't know where you can go to try out different shotguns. There is the Oak Gun club off the i-5 between Valencia and San Fernando Valley where you can shot "trap" at an outdoor gun range. You might hang out there and see if anybody knows where you can try out different shot guns or talk to the patrons to see if you can get any more advice.

If you plan on carrying a gun on your person or in your truck/car. You might want to consider a less costly gun, just in case you get caught with it. Most likely you would lose the gun if you got caught by the police for a concealed weapon.

A large portion of the US casualties came from explosives, not guns. It helped that the US didn't bother to guard big storage depots full of explosives.

Anyway, you'll notice that the casualties are tapering off. The guns aren't really accomplishing much; the US can afford to simply bribe other Iraqis to do the fighting and disarming of the populace. This is exactly what would happen here if there were some kind of armed uprising. @ Eric,

The majority of the world has lower gun-death rates than the US.
And unless something changed recently the UK and and every other 1st world country has a lower gun death rate than the US.

Japan has some of the strictest gun laws in the world, they also happen to have an extremely low crime rate and a low gun death rate.

Mexico has a higher crime rate than the US but less deaths by gun. Mexico has much stricter gun laws, and even though they have more crime there, and share a very porous border with a country that has a very liberal gun policy, they still have less gun deaths.

I don't think anecdotes about any 2 countries can tell the whole story about gun violence, but that "Reason" article is particularly silly because they pick maybe the one exception of a "1st world" country with strict gun laws that has a higher crime rate than the us. Pretty much every other major country with stricter gun laws that the US has a lower crime rate, lower prison rate, and lower gun death rates.

I don't think a total ban on guns in the US will solve any problems, I just don't get the irrational argument that making sensible controls on guns will some how cause crime to sky rocket.

............

I do however think that some of this Gun Run has been caused by all those people who bought into McPailns skare taktiks with Obama, trying to frame him as anti-american, terrorist friendly, smooth-taliking socialist.

They got this impression after I mentioned some incidents in high school where this might've been the case, but since then, I've grown to control myself.

That still wasn't enough to convince the UC Berkeley dipshit, who subsequently suggested in the letter that I try something less-violent(and less manly) like engineering or some, other high-education, discipline.

No thanks.

huh?

Um yeas I don't spend my life researching firearms but there is no denying that while the US has one of the more liberal gun laws of any major country we also have a rate of gun related deaths.

I'm not a law maker, I don't know what types of restrictions on guns make the most sense.

I do know that a normal citizen does not need a weapon designed for the sole purpose of killing lots of people. If you need an assault rifle to go hunting than you shouldn't be hunting.

I do know that guns shouldn't be handed out like candy. That guns shouldn't be given out to everybody who wants one just because they want one.

We control who can fly a plane, who can drive a car, who can operate a truck, you need a license to cut hair or pluck eyebrows, so yeah, some kind of licensing of people who use guns is appropriate.

When the constitution was written "arms" were knives and muskets and a black man was considered 3/5 of a person.

So do we have an unrestricted right to bear arms?
Machine guns, Bazookas, Bombs, Grenade launchers, sonic death rays, armored cars mounted with anti-personal missiles?

I believe in a certain level of access to guns in this country because guns have a cultural history here, and being in a democratic republic means balancing the rights of minorities (gun owners) with the wishes of the majority.

Certainly any person that's not working for an armed revolution believes in some "sensible" gun controls.

So I'll ask again.
What "sensible" gun controls do you believe in el_spaniard?

I definitely know I could keep my cool when faced with some belligerent suspects.

I'm just saying that the psychiatrists decisions should be used as a discretionary tool when evaluating the officer year from year.
Give a recruit a chance to shine and show their worth, as opposed to keeping force levels low and crime high, due to concerns over law-suits.

Kind of like trucking companies and accidents, if a LEO has less-to-no marks on their psychiatric profiles, they'll be less prone to termination.

I just don't like the philosophy they follow now, where if they find you mentally unfit, yet tell you that you're mentally fit for something that doesn't contain violent material.

I mean, most people tend to act like anger is a mental-illness and is unnatural.
If a potential LEO is easy to blow up, then a holder of a non-violent occupation like an engineer or, doctor could easily do so themselves.

Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico all have correctional departments with reputations for keeping their inmates in check.
With the hiring practices they have there, as long as you have a clean record, they'll give you a shot, if you don't work out, 86-time.

@tallcans

Yes, political bullshit thread, but I was a little concerned and wanted to see what others thought about it.

If bent' doesn't like the present state of law enforcement, let him join and show 'em how it's done. werd.

Thanx, sexy, but I'll reiterate my reasoning again.

I want to get into a career that could possibly change lives and make a difference by being out on the front-lines everyday.

This way, if I were to ever run for office, I would be proud to say that, "I was there and I know how these people, I witnessed the suffering and handled it on a first-case basis!!"

To me, I would rather get my hands dirty and know what I was working with as opposed to starting at the top and fixing problems via, reading case reports.

I dunno, people usually hassle me and tell me to forget being a cop, forget the military, and just go to school, get all sorts of degrees, and then take the white-collar, civil-servant route.

I may have the brains for that, but I didn't like school all that much either.
But, perhaps after I get into an LEO-career, I may change that train of thought to get ahead in that field.

But, just remember that if I ever do move out of state in order to pursue this(LE) line of work, I will not stop coming to rides.

As Teal'c said, "Undomesticated Equines will not hold me back!!!"

And, in case anyone forgot, "going out of state" was how I met the MR-Movement!!!

Bentstrider......You really should love your job.. Get up and look forward to going to work everyday. With this being said, it is my advice that seek out a career in which the uniform closely resembles that of the outfits flagship team SG-1

sexy, I like driving trucks, I just hate this company I'm with right now.
My main gripe is the fact that we work our taxes with the "1099" system as opposed to "W-2's".

Me, I'd rather have W-2's any day of the week, only reason I'm with the company I'm at right now is to gain the necessary experience needed to, hopefully, get rehired back to Swift again.

As far as I've seen, CDCR and the CBP both utilize that OD-green color that SG-1 proudly jocks!!!
