fucking so stoked that the redline's running late for the next couple months.
who's taking the redline to the ride?
reply
I'll be jumping on it in Hollywood. I am glad it is running until 3AM, this is going to change the nature of our rides.

KiMS111.21.08 - 11:41 am

Mike don't listen to RBI, River Path is EZ- i did it crunk as hell last time, take Riverside to Fletcher, get on there and dont stop til it spits you out in Griffith park then make a right and stay on victory til chandler. You never did the river path before?
tallcans4tallbikes11.21.08 - 11:42 am
reply
it's faster going south because it's a slight grade downhill the whole way.
it starts @ Victory/Riverside north of Griffith Park.
I exit @ Fletcher and take residential streets to intersection of the 110 & 5 fwys, then ride Broadway into downtown.
spiraldemon11.21.08 - 11:44 am

My directions were to go back into the Valley. technically it is frogtown turf, but whatever.

you can also take san fernando all the way back into the valley.

When do the trains start running after 3?
Graham11.21.08 - 11:47 am

SAn Fernando is WAAAYYYYYY sketchier, the cars there go superfast cuz the lights are far apart, with some blind turns I DO NOT RECOMMEND San Fernando at nite

hell yeah! dude thanks for that route map. probably the most help i got from this fucking forum other than where to find lolcat pictures.
@ tallcans and spiraldemon
yeah for some reason, i could never figure out how to get into LA through noho.
i used to ride through sepulveda pass to get to the westside but thats when i had a geared bike and thats not happening anymore since my drive train got raped.
also im retarded with directions so i always get lost and spend the rest of my night trying to find my way back home.
anybody else have other routes to gettin into LA?
is there some sort of collective map with all the routes into LA?

Coldwater Canyon is my all time favorite, Laurel is badass also, both are for brakeless BLACK BELT fixie ridazz only, or any ol' roadies I guess

@ Graham and Tallcans
I know laurel is gnar as fuck,
hows cahuenga?
KiMS111.21.08 - 12:06 pm
reply
Cahuenga going INTO Hollywood from the valley is easy peasy... even I could do it fixed probably (although the downhill is gnarls with cars merging from the right... so brakes are a good idea.)
canadienne11.21.08 - 12:12 pm
reply
I've never done laurel or coldwater. Fuck that. I'd like to do it on a road bike though.
Graham11.21.08 - 12:17 pm
reply
Chauenga pass at night is a little sketchy just cause everyone is going super fast in there cars to and fro the parties.
Graham11.21.08 - 12:17 pm
reply
@canadienne
"Cahuenga going INTO Hollywood from the valley is easy peasy"
im guessing hollywood back to the valley is tough?
to make sure i have all my options correct, i can take:
1. cahuenga
2. the griffith park/zoo drive
3. laurel/coldwater (ive done laurel on a geared bike and srsly, i remember that was a FUCKING NIGHTMARE on a friday night.)
am i missing any other routes?
KiMS111.21.08 - 12:18 pm
reply
I would think laurel would be nice at like 4 in the mourning with no one really on the road.
Graham11.21.08 - 12:19 pm
reply
@graham
yeah 4 in the morning and with a set of sick ass headlights.
so many fucking potholes!
KiMS111.21.08 - 12:21 pm
reply
depending on where you are in hollywood, you can take sunset to hillhurst or vermont, and then take a right on los feliz and go down the hill until you take a left at riverside/crystal springs and then ride through the park from there.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/hwd-2-sfv
ruinedbyidiots11.21.08 - 12:26 pm
reply
yeah KiMS1... well, if you LIKE climbing hills, Cahuenga into the valley from Hollywood is a quick solution to get home... but without gears I doubt I could do the whole thing.
My preferred route is through Griffith Park (Crystal Springs) at night... it's less sketchy than the bike path, the air is always fresh, and it's blocked off to cars, so you own the road.

@everyone

@ tallcans
once i get over the hill im good to go. i skate a lot in LA so i know my way once i cross over. i know the LA county freeway system like the back of my hand. useless knowledge if im on my bike though.
idk, riding my bike over and across seems like such a huge hassle since the train is right there too
but now, since i have these routes down, you'll be seeing me more often on that side.

no problem. i love how my geographical knowledge has improved more on the bicycle than by car. although i've always been an l.a. native and have been driving for over 15 years i do feel i've learned much more geographically by the mighty bicycle.

yeah! i grew up back and forth between the valley, west and east LA, and i really didnt start discovering shit till i got my bike. i knew all the skatespots and how to get to them but never paid attention to anything in between.
i really want to get to know the routes better for getting up and over the hill, i know a lot of cats do that when coming here for SFVCM and what not.
stilline and all those other cats that used to ride in from dtla for TNS rides, idk, i always thought that was pretty sick.
or mike ayers, i think he rode infrom pasadena for awhile.

when i dated a girl in noho and worked at the fox lot in century city i would do the morning commute in 40 minutes if i crashed at her place. one time i spent a whole week at her place and commuted to work over coldwater canyon. in that week i concurred the climbs. day one i had to make 2 stops to catch my wind, day two 1 stop and by day 3 no stops (but still painful). day 4 and 5 were a breeze and ran into the same car commuters all the time. she lived on oxnard and coldwater. i'd shoot up coldwater and as soon as i hit ventura around 8:10am there was a never ending trail of cars sluggishly moving up the twisted path of the canyon. when the canyon is congested with traffic it is when it feels the safest to commute or ride because cars are controled to a limited speed. some contractors in their big chevy, ford, and dodge trucks and paisas would whistle and harrass me for wearing spandex as they passed but then i'd pass them again and then they'd pass and then i'd pass them again and so on. after you reach the summit (at mullholland dr) then it's all down hill and you leave all those cars 10 - 15 minutes behind. then i'd make a right on sta. monica and a left on ave of the stars and right after olympic was an entry point to the lot. i loved coming to a skid stop outside my building while everyone was outside drinking coffee or chowing on breakfast. I also loved that there was a gym in our building with state of the art showers and all the toilettries you needed except toothpaste. so i'd shower change and begin work. it was awesome. on the noho coomute back home i'd ride to hollywood and highland and take the redline to the noho station and ride to her place from there. when i wasn't doing it from noho i was doing under 30 from k-town, via beverly or 3rd st.

There are several resedential side routes over the hill into Hollywood that are low traffic. Berry Drive off sunshine terrace,
Multiview Dr. off Broadlawn and Cauenga. Nichols cyn off Hollywood blvd. Franklin cyn resevor Coldwater and Mullholland.
Camino de la Cumbre off ValleyVista. I ride these routes often to go over the hill, nice neighborhoods, low traffic. Sorry fixie people you need to be able to climb.
