Grateful Dead Tie Dye Ride

Well, its time to start hyping this month's Midnight Ridazz event - which is this Friday night Wooot!
Come on downtown to the Chinatown Metro Station where we'll gather for a chill, easy ride through beautiful Highland Park, Lincoln Park Hollenbeck Park, MacArthur Park and uh, 2nd street tunnel (park).
We'll be pulling trailers with Grateful Dead and other 60's music for all to ride along to. Maybe i'll even through in Ace of Spades for those who may not be the biggest fan of 60's music.
We'll meet at 9pm and ride at 10pm.
Be sure to wear your Tie Dye T-Shirts if you have one.
Ride details can be found Here:

Groovy. I'll be there reliving the music of my youth (no, not the 60s. The 60s revival of the late 80s). Can't remember the last time I listened to the dead in public. Well, I guess I can, since it was probably a dead show, but memories of such events are necessarily somewhat hazy.

Please don't dominate the rap, jack, if you've got nothing new to say.
If you please, don't back up the track this train's got to run today.
I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill
I heard someone say better run away, others say better stand still.
Now I don't know, but I been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold,
Other hand I have heard it said, it's just as hard with the weight of lead.
Who can deny, who can deny, it's not just a change in style?
One step down and another begun and I wonder how many miles.
I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill
Things went down we don't understand, but I think in time we will.
Now, I don't know but I was told in the heat of the sun a man died of cold.
Keep on coming or stand and wait, with the sun so dark and the hour so late.
You can't overlook the lack, jack, of any other highway to ride.
It's got no signs or dividing lines and very few rule to guide.
I saw things getting out of hand, I guess they always will.
Now I don't know but I been told
If the horse don't pull you got to carry the load.
I don't know whose back's that strong, maybe find out before too long.
One way or another, one way or another,
One way or another, this darkness got to give.

Big Bike Dan, Thinkpeace and I tested the new and improved FM Transmitter Eric has been working on tonight. BBD and Eric said that the coverage range was substantially better than the previous set up. I'm very excited to see how this works when we have a bunch of Music Systems all tuned to 104.7
We will still need for the bikes pulling Trailers to stay within range of the FM Transmitter bike and thus that bike will need to set the pace for the ride. Luckily, we have none other than the incredible Danny Z pulling the 'mitter
If anyone has a music system and wants to bring it to add to the ride experience, that would be awesome The big thing we need is for people to bring some form of FM tuner/radio to connect to the music system. Those little mp3/fm radios work well.
See you tomorrow night!

2 questions:
1. Anyone have an idea of the size of the ride. I looked back a couple of times and just saw endless people on bikes and i know the sweep crew was many streets back helping people.
2. Injury report/recap. I had heard of 1 girl who hurt her hand when the ride got hijacked just before Vons, 1 girl who crashed and hit her head but is ok (not wearing helmet!) and 1 bmx-er who went down hard when he was off course.
Would love to hear how everyone is and if there were more that i haven't heard about.
Thanks.

-to the jerkoff that graffiti'd on the bridge.
-to the jerofkk who threw his beer breaking in the street and rolling in the storm drain.
-to the total jerkoffs that hijacked the ride twice. (right turn down the street with tracks where a girl fell and possibly broke a wrist) and the other asshole(s) who kept screaming LEFT ON 7TH and causing the ride to be about 3 miles shorter than planned cuz we were gonna make it up to McArthur Park but it was uphill to try to get it back on track.

THANKS To the 3 guys that RAN out of the VONS with TWO 30 packs and an 18 pack of tecate. Thanks to you for lowering the integrity of Bike Rides in LA. Do you think we'd be able to go back to that parking lot again with a huge ride? Do you think they wouldn't call the cops and tell them that the group of cyclists are looting the store?
Stevo stepped up and paid for your stolen beer.
Thanks Again.

Great ride stevo4. I love the route (sans the hijacked route through the railroad street where a couple people crashed I hear)
Maybe I'm becoming an old man, but, like other riders on these boreds I'm getting the impression that drinking is more important than riding. It really used to be about the riding.... and for many it is, but I was fearful many times for drunks swerving AND angry drunks hijacking the ride.
COMMON SENSE READ THIS:
If you are not one of the organizers of the ride. Don't call out directions unless they were called out to you from a ride organizer. its just rude. The ride was highjacked onto a dangerous street with parallel running rails on it. People fell and got hurt. Who ever hijacked this ride would apologize to the person who got hurt if they cared about their mistakes. The people who organize this spent a lot of their energy and soul choosing routes.
If you approach a red light. STOP at the light and WAIT for the green to go. That's what the cops want and that's just plain smart. You wouldn't want to be the drunken party responsible for a crash or death from an unforseen car. Just stop. This isn't a race.
Stop drinking so much before the ride its killing the culture. We look less and less like people out to have a good fun bike ride and more like drunks who can't afford cars or have to ride bikes because of DUI license suspension.

also thanks to the guy who stopped on the same road doing the same when there were grates in the middle of the road.
@ those who steal shit on the rides
I have no objections if people steal from large supermarkets (vs mom and pop shops) BUT do it on your own time when you are ALONE… why can’t you? OH wait b/c no one is there to give you cover? STEVEO had to pay for your shit so essentially you stole from SteveO… hope you’re proud.

Shoplifting from stores and committing vandalism on rides on the stops is a great way to fuck up the future of the ride for everyone. If I see someone pulling this crap, I will arrest them myself (yay citizen's arrest) and pepper spray them if they try to run away before the cops show up.
And shoplifting is generally a douchebag activity, even if it's not in the context of ruining a fun activity for hundreds of people.

Yeah, even though we are all individuals responsible for our choices, the fact that we are a group riding together means that stupid actions by a few individuals will tarnish the reputation of the entire group. It sucks but it's true.
If we want to be able to continue to ride, then we have to call people out on stupid actions that affect everybody.
This is about riding. I want to ride with my friends and not get persecuted for it because a few idiots have decided to do things which make us unwelcome in the communities we ride though. There's got to be RESPECT. Have you not read

We really need to get back to making the stops part of the theme. I think we went off track when we started using the stops as an opportunity to buy alcohol.
I'm not oppose to drinking, thats a personal choice, but it will be different if you'll have to carry what you want to drink from the beginning of the ride. By stopping at these places, we prolong the stop since we have to wait on people buying alcohol. Most stores aren't staffed to accommodate the surge in business that we bring. If you want to drink , buy it before the ride and lug it with you.
There are other rides that every stop is a liquor store, let's try to preserve the spirit of the 2nd Friday Ride.

Great ride Stevo... glad to be back and a great route you chose. I totally dug the walkie talkie action... very awesome stuff. I'd also like to thank all those that helped puling the music trailers, fm transmitter, and the sweeping team.
I for one would like to purchase cold beer.... not semi-cold, slightly shaken beer that i've been luggin in my bag... and I do like to think we're helping mom and pops stores and that they appreciate our business and vice versa.
Anyone remember that one S&S liquor stop a while back where that lady was going crazy accusing of people of stealing and she was going to call the cops? And another one where they just closed the doors when we pulled up? That's gonna be how every stop is going to be. Whether it's MR... S&S.... Crank Mob... Critical Mass... westside or eastside... if it's people on bikes... then none of us will be able to buy cold beer. I'll just have to resort to my semi cold beer that has been shaking in my bag since the start.

Al,
There are multiple opportunities to buy a cold beer along the way if so choose. It does not take long to stop buy beers and catch back up with the ride, thats how many have done it in the past.
Again, there are several other rides that use the stops to refill. Sins and Sprockets is one of those rides but that is that nature of that ride. When I ride SnS I know what to expect. The 2nd Friday Ride always has been about the theme and riding, it is what makes it unique.
The 2nd Friday Ride, being the original MR ride, has been the introduction to the MR culture to many. The image that we present on this ride is what many take back to their family and friends. Up to now the feedback has been positive, partly because of the novelty. But it would be nice if this ride can be family safe. I want to see more parents and their kids on this ride. There is a whole population out there that want to ride with us but are hesitant because of the image we present. I doubt it will happen but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I barely realized that my post was a couple minutes after yours and wasn't a direct response to yours. My main point is that I'd like to be welcomed in stores and that they appreciate our business (whether it's beer or water) and that with the whole stealing thing... it's giving MR a neg image and then everyones gonna close their doors.
I would totally like to see more families and the idea of stops away from liquor stores... like in parks or bridges would be nice. Like nice scenery where you can sit back and relax... where you can appreciate the biking culture in L.A.

Hey there,
I'm now rested and can think straight. I got home around 4a after taking home a rider who's pedal broke off and she needed a ride to Venice. Then had to return the walkies this morning and go to the Olumpic Blvd. 7-11 to deal with the manager and sort out Stealing situation #2.
As someone mentioned above, stores are going to start locking their doors when we arrive, and THATS EXACTLY WHAT THIS 7-11 IS GOING TO DO FROM NOW ON. They were really unhappy when some person stole some beer last night. The manager told me, NO MORE. We won't be allowed inside and to tell the bikers sorry. I am still working on sorting this out and like at the Vons, to let them know that as a whole we are a really great group and its unfortunate that a couple of people are causing the problem.
I will be speaking with the manager again tonight and the solution may be that only a small handful of riders will be allowed in the store at a time. This will really suck but it may be the only alternative to losing a valuable location. I will also offer to pay for the beer and whatever else was taken to make the situation right.
As for Vons, i even contacted the manager several days before as a courtesy to let them know we would be having 500 odd people stopping by there store an hour before they close. I didn't want to inundate them with only 1 or 2 cashier's there and overwhelm them and hold us up.
We NEED to be able to come back to that location. There are just not that many places we can congregate late at night that can support us and offer bathrooms and food/drink supplies. It was important to me to make things right with the manager. She said to me, "why do you want to pay for the stuff that was stolen" and i said, (again) that we are largely a friendly and respectful group of cyclists and that i'm sorry a few bad apples were causing a problem. But we want to keep this relationship positive and that you welcome our return in the future.
I'll make a few other comments about the ride in the next reply.

Part 3.
Overall, i had a great time putting this on and really, 99% of the feedback was positive and most, i think, enjoyed themselves and had a good time. So i guess that's the bottom line.
I was certainly disappointed about the stealing but that's been discussed and not much i can do about that.
The ride got hi-jacked twice. First was right before Vons and it was unfortunate that it got taken down those bad roads. I was at least able to grab the back portion of the ride and get them to Vons safely.
The 2nd Hi-Jack was going down Hill, coming up to 7th Street. I was calling out to turn right (which would have taken us to MacArthur Park before stopping on Olympic at the 7-11) but some guy would then yell left on 7th. I tried countering him, but he and his friends all turned and for some strange reason, the rest of the group, decided to follow them instead of listening to me (as they had been for several previous turns) I was about to give up until Tern (i'm glad you are still here in LA!) said we should try and get back on track. So, we raced to the front and luckily, we were coming up to Olympic and i quickly got the group back on track by heading to the 7-11 that was originally part of my route. So Yay for that recovery!!
Btw, AFAIK, there were no tickets given last night. I saw LAPD on the bridge, and at the bottom of the bridge watching us as well as on Olympic when the pulled over some riders who ran a light but i think only gave them a warning. So, once again, the LAPD were super cool and i thank them too for their following the SPIRIT of the law.
I still saw lots of riders riding on the opposite side of the yellow line, including going up Soto over a blind hill where you couldn't see the oncoming traffic. Just industrial strength dumb! I'm glad no one got hurt. Another observation was, given the size of our ride, we were taking up all lanes of the road and the corkers had to ride far left to get to the front so, they were obligated to ride further left than i would have liked, but i can understand it better now.
Being up front for a change, i didn't really experience the drunken-ness that i guess took place further back in the pack. We only had 2 stops on this ride that were at places to purchase food/drink. I've been on a number of other rides that have more stops. I, personally, liked the balance of riding vs. stops this time. (more riding). And, on a side note, the original thought was to briefly stop at Vons for supplies but to then go to Lincoln Park and hang out there.
Lastly, the highlight for me was riding through the 2nd Street tunnel while Big Bike Dan's music system was playing On the Run by Pink Floyd. Trippy.

As we were heading south on Hill, I kept hearing some twerp on a BMX calling out for left turn. As we got to 7th and turned right, I still heard him calling out for a left turn. Another time I heard him calling out to slow down, I looked at my speedo and we were doing 10mph. If he was having a hard time keeping up at 10mph, maybe he shouId get another bike or stay home. I think he was having fun just trying to be contrary.

I didn't realize the 2nd hijack was a hijack. We saw riders turn to the right and started shouting and pointing a right turn, and then we saw riders turning left a well as bunch of the right turning riders coming back down 7th and going with them. At that point, we all started indicating a left turn instead and it was all over.
I had a great time, which actually makes a nice change from most of the larger rides I've done of late. The only suggestino I would make would be to make the route a bit more public. It would have been much easier to prevent hijacks if there were people around who knew the correct route.
Thanks for all the hard work Steveo (and helpers). It was probably hectic for you but all kinds of fun for the rest of us.

I was actually thinking the opposite of making the route public.
I noticed that after the first hijack, we didn't bother to try and stop the fast front from going the wrong way, we just stayed at the mellow pace (big bike dan, stevo and I) and when the turn was coming up we would vocalize it. those that had raced up ahead and tried to hijack we then broken off and either made a u turn to get back to the ride or became their own ride (good riddance). After a few false turns it seemed to calm the hijackers down. I got caught up with a crash back in DTLA so I didnt get a chance to see the 2nd hijack but I'm really into this concept of letting the hijackers ride on off to their hearts content.

I had a couple of thoughts on riding front of pack and trying to control the ride. Probably pipe dreams but whatever.
First i was thinking on the drive home that i should carry one of the small motor boat air horns that are cheap, small and deafening. My vengeful mind was thinking, as soon as that kid started shouting "Left on 7th" that i'd pull out the air horn, race over to him and blast him and then yell "FAIL" or something like that. The air horn would certainly get everyone's attention and is more jarring than someone on a megaphone. Plus it would get everyone's attention and maybe i could regain control and focus of the ride.
Alternatively, even though we had BBD, Bananaphone, Barleye, etc. up front, we weren't really a tight pack to truly guide the massive group. I was thinking if i really had a pack of say, 10-20 dedicated riders who stayed tight and in the front we could collectively control the speed and route of the ride. And if some riders took off in front of us, then we'd still be this large unit of cyclists that could prevent (?) others from picking up speed and sliding through the front pack. In essence, like SNS does but on a bigger scale. I really don't like to be heavy handed and controlling but to me it does feel like it may be necessary for everyone's safety on these massive rides.

(98% of us get what these rides are supposed to be about) And i'm very proud to be apart of this group and love telling others outside of the night time cycling community how special this really is.

stevo the idea is to have as little confrontation as possible. having 10 -20 people fighting to be the front of the line or jockeying constantly to be the front costs a lot of energy and yelling. it could easily get difficult and confrontational.... if those same 20 people were interspersed amongst the ride and were vocal about up coming turns then the front pack of "fast" riders can ride off into the sunset for all that anyone could care. soon enough the lesson would be learned that you have to be within ear shot of the organizers or get lost. I would like to experiment on a ride using this formula.

I agree. I want to avoid confrontation and that wasn't really my intention obviously, just working toward maintaining control of the ride. I like your idea and i volunteer to be part of the dedicated crew to call out instructions or support the ride. I'm happy to take on the task as a job and not stray from it for the duration of the ride. My only concern is that others not connected with the organizers could just as easily call out wrong turns, etc. How does joe beach cruiser know who to listen to? SNS has their ride jackets but i'm not advocating that we do the same but is there a compromise?
stevo407.12.08 - 5:30 pm

Thanks Steveo.
Are there really people out there trying to jack routes or deviate people from the original plan? That stretch of road with the train tracks was really brutal. I'm surprised there weren't more casualties of every type. People should be allowed to go as fast as they'd like and should they want to go a different way then let them. There should be more riders dispersed among the entire pack who know the route and can guide people the correct way, mentioning that not doing so might land you in such a street as last night's.

THOUGHTS FROM A NEWBIE
This was my second ride and please excuse my possibly naive thoughts questions.
Not knowing who Steve is (although he must of been the guy with the walkies) I never knew if the ride was being led by someone or not. Like when I was at the front of the line(around hill/7th). I didn't like that feeling and I felt like moving back into the "dummer" part of the group that just follows the mass. Is there anyway that the route leader/leaders could wear a very special light for us to follow? Something with EL tubing that says leader or some shit.
http://www.elwire.com/
Second, how come the original map to fairfax/sunset and stuff wasn't followed. Just curious. Does that happen often? I'm cool with changing things up but I was looking forward to part of that ride. I also heard lots of people complain how they planned their evening around that ride and now their rendezvous plans/etc were screwed up. Again I don't care but many mentioned it in my group. Which is made up of veterans and newbies.
I witnessed a guy chuck his glass bottle in the street and the same guy(90 percent sure) steal beer from the 7-11. Both times he was heckled by us and others. Not cool at all. I almost think more attention should be drawn to those individuals when witnessed by other riders.
Lastly, this ride seemed short to me. Wanted to cover some more ground. I like it when I feel like I have come to a totally different part of the city and back. How many miles was that last night?
All in all I had a great time. Always do. Thanks Steve and everyone else that made it happen.

Shoplifting from stores and committing vandalism on rides on the stops is a great way to fuck up the future of the ride for everyone. If I see someone pulling this crap, I will arrest them myself (yay citizen's arrest) and pepper spray them if they try to run away before the cops show up.
And shoplifting is generally a douchebag activity, even if it's not in the context of ruining a fun activity for hundreds of people.
mullingitover
07.12.08 - 4:13 pm
That is a extremely terrible idea. I think if you were to really pull something like that a huge fight would break out and a lot of people would end up getting very hurt especially yourself. Using force against our community simply will not work.
Two wrongs do not make a rite. Trying to "Citizens Arrest" someone is flat out retarded, we have oppressive cops to do the arresting not us. There are A LOT of people who have the mentality that "Snitches gets stitches" and are very die hard about that, I for one go by that rule to a certain extent, and what you are imposing crosses my line and many other peoples as well. I simply will not stand for it.
Put it this way, if i know someone on the ride who is writing on shit or stealing booze and you tried to come up and "Citizens Arrest" him or her, and if they tried to "Escape" and you were to actually pepper spray them, I would have no sympathy or remorse for you. With that being said I am NOT a violent person. At all, Seriously. I do not enjoy fighting or watching a fight go down, and I personally will try to stop it.
But using force on another rida is plain WRONG. Talk to them MAN TO MAN. When people do stupid shit I call them out about it right away and thats that. If its really that personal take em down the street and duke it out, away from everyone else like a man.
In the end, we all need to communicate more on the rides. If you feel like you have something to say and that everyone should hear it then get a megaphone. I have one and people really do listen to you when your using it. We do not need to result to putting hands on one another when it can simply be talked out. and I think we can all agree with that.

"snitches get stitches"?
WTF dude? That's completely retarded.
Tolerance of criminal behavior only increases that behavior.
Look at neighborhoods that have an effective relationship with law enforcement versus those that follow the "stop snitching" mandate, and think about which one you'd rather settle down and raise a family in.
While citizens arrests and pepper spray may be a little bit much, if we want to be able to continue enjoying these rides, some self-policing may be in order.
Having the good people have to pay for stolen goods every ride is pathetic.
Stealing fucking sucks, both for the riders and the other communities we're a part of.
Snitches get stitches? Fuck that. How about criminals and thugs get named and shamed and/or reported to the proper authorities?
This behavior does nothing good for the rest of us, and tolerating it is absolutely shameful.
The wall of shame is a great idea. If you see somebody being an asshole, just whip out the cell phone camera and put them up on the interwebs.
It wouldn't take more than a few jackasses being publicly humiliated before we saw a distinct increase in the civility of the rest of the riders.
Don't want to he held accountable for your actions? Don't commit actions that you'll have to be held accountable for.

Easy there, I'm kidding. I'm not really going to perform a citizen's arrest on anyone.
But I should. So should you.
This stuff is going to end up ruining our rides if we get a reputation for being a bunch of hooligans. Personally, I'd prefer that we were self-policing rather than having the LAPD perform that function for us. Shoplifting and vandalism are lame, they rightfully make people mad, and if that's what we're known for then we'll find doors slammed in our faces and a constant police presence.

So, um, there's no reason to keep the damned routes secret. The Nazis aren't coming for us and the "hijackers," if they even exist (which I really doubt), aren't really sitting around plotting to misdirect the ride at key locations.
If you want people to stop listening to "hijackers," publicize the routes, encourage riders to memorize the jist of them, and make gmaps available so that people have a visual image of the shape of the route in their heads. They'll know intuitively if somebody is trying to take the ride in the wrong direction. That's really all you can do. Beyond that...well, MR has always had an element of adventure and risk to it. Accept and move on.
Theft, vandalism, and drunken douchebaggery are much bigger problems than "hijacking" anyway.

PORTERHOUSE PLEASE READ THIS
What the big deal about stealing a tecate IT IS A HUGE DEAL
You probably don’t know the history of this ride and you probably have no idea the work involved in making this happen
The original Organizers of this ride where ready to scrap what has become a important night to so many of us. The headaches the organizer where getting, got to the point where it wasn’t worth it for them to put on this ride. Too much bitching at them, too much concern about somebody getting hurt real bad. One of us, got the original organizers to let him take over the ride. That same person created and pays for this site that we use to organize. That one person has put so much energy, time and risk to keep this thing happening. He has also taken the most tolerant approach to people that don’t get, what a big deal negative behavior is on this ride. He has taken the time to try to teach them.
Then there has been many people who have worked so hard to keep these rides happening and all that it takes to keep them happening. There is too much to mention. This thing has not happened by chance, there has been so much work put into this all to get it where it is today. Any tarnish on or to these rides, is a slap in the face to all the people who brought it to where it is today.
This stealing a Tecate was a big deal to the guy who organized this ride. Such a big deal that if you read, he went back to the business where it was shoplifted from, pay for the stolen items and try to make a amends to the store management to keep a positive image for this ride. These rides are important to him, as it is too many people around here. We know that we have to watch ourselves to get away with our shenanigans, we have to be respectful to the neighbors we past and the areas we stop in.
Maybe you don’t know what the organizer did to make this ride happen. Maybe you don’t realize the whole team of people he put together, so you could have fun. At no cost to you, he covered all the expensive including that tecate that somebody decided to take. He put the thought into the ride. Had to go out and decided what the perfect route was for this ride. Putting together a route when done right is not a easy thing to do, it take lots of time and effort. Then designed a spoke card. Printed up the spoke cards, and went and had them laminated, all at of his own pocket. Had to come up with song list, this takes a lot of time. Got all the music trailers together. Somebody else had been working long and hard to have a transmitter, so all the sounds are in sync. This has been no easy task. The organizer got together a crew, to clean up after people that don’t know better to throw their trash away. Had a crew to help people with mechanical problems. Somebody else donated there truck, and the gas to drive this monster, to help people who break down and might need a ride. A injured guy on crutches, dragged his wife out with him as he followed to look out after the people who might not be able to get there bikes fixed, and gave them a ride.
On top of all this, the organizer got together all the ink to make tye die shirts a week prior, all out of his own pocket. Another guy who had some of his personal belongings recently taken from somebody in this community, decides to open his residence so that everybody could come together to have a place to make the t-shirts.
So what does have to do with taking the tecate. It made him and all the people who worked so hard to get this ride together look really bad. That we just come out in mobs and have people loot their businesses.
Maybe you don’t realize, that when you steal from somebody store, you are stealing from their profit margin, (i.e) their salary. You think they got that beer for free, you think they don’t pay high rents for there space to sell you beer. You think they don’t have to pay for the electricity to keep the refrigerators running to keep the beer cold. You think they don’t have to a shit load of taxes for all the permits they have to obtain, to sell beer legally, You think that alcohol license is an easy thing to get.
They also have to pay any employees they may, and have to pay the taxes on them. If everything works out right, after about five years they might start making a living. Then somebody steals that living from them by taking that tecate.
It not such a big deal, how about the person you work for say, "I’m going to not pay you for a half hour of your work" stop whining, it’s no big deal. After you pay your taxes, pay your rent, pay your utilities, pay for food, and pay for whatever else bills you have, that half hour of pay may be all you have to enjoy yourself with or obtain something from yourself that you really want. No big deal they are taking it from you. That would suck, you wouldn’t say no big deal, you would be pissed that someone just stole from you. IT IS A HUGE DEAL.

I cant hang with all the debate.
Good ride. I have not come out to a group ride in a little while and This ride made me amped on it. Surprised to hear this is someone's first planned ride. The organization and execution were stronger than any ride I have seen for the most part over a long time now.
But I never heard box of rain! Maybe I missed it?
and a big thumbs up to those flatland guys that tore shit up.
also good to see some east side action. I still think we need an awesome Huntington drive ride!

Nice Recap Sexy.
Doad, We did play Box of Rain but due to some audio technical difficulties, you may not have been nearby to hear it from one of the systems when we went back to separate systems. Sorry about that but glad you had a good time overall.
And Porterhouse, the short version of what Sexy wrote above is:
Did you have a decent time on this ride? If the answer is yes, then consider what it will be like if we can't go to stores anymore and our rides no longer have food/drink stops. Will that still be fun for you? I'm pretty sure the answer will be 'no'. Please just help us keep the fun going. Really pretty simple.

Well said Sexy. Many don't realize that MR's success built on the work that others have done. Each ride contributing something to the previous. Some things, like the state of detente with have with the LAPD and our neighborhoods, took a while to cultivate. Unfortunately, it doesn't take much to take undo everything.
"Maybe we are just getting old". That is a sentiment that I've heard from so many veteran ridazz that night. It was not long ago that we were the drunks that the founders were trying to corral. I am hoping that all this is cyclical and that it will sort itself out. Maybe some of us have reach the same point, the founders have reached when they decided to step down or disappear. Hopefully this new batch of ridazz will some sense of MR's history and keep the spirit going.

yes people buy weed and smoke it. They don't Steal it, they buy it.
Yes people drink and ride. The point is to have fun, but not at other expense. We pay for our weed and drinks, some people smoke and drink to enhance the evening, but not to endanger anybody or ruin somebody else's good time.
Those crimes are consider consensual until they effect someone else, then they are crime against someone. Most people commit these crimes daily, and it not a problem until it actually effects someone else.
Someone stealing your bike or your money would effect you immediately, just like stealing that beer effected the store owner immediately.
We look after one another on these rides. Make sure someone is not to out of control. If someone is out of control, somebody else will step up to help them. Just like they will help someone with a mechanical problem. We also call out someone if they are doing something that is harming or potentially going to harm someone else.
Stealing effects the victim and the image of the ride. It may also create popular support to end the rides. STOP IT, it is not welcomed on these rides. Actually stealing is not welcomed anywhere.

al lbeing hypocritikal. A little spelling errors isn't a big deal. Stealing is.
you can't even get Firefox to turn al into all. lbeing and hypocritikal did work this time. You don't know how many times I have to get a dictionary or use a search engine to spell correctly while using firefox. I have had so many times with just one letter off and firefox didn't find the correct spelling

Ay putos no reason to racism ok! English not my first language although I was still born here East LA probly none of you from here. I'm just trying to say something don't take it personal. You maybe don't agree but why you saay that things?
porterhouse07.13.08 - 11:59 am

Agreed Porterhouse.
And you bring up a good point (about where your from) . That's one of the cool things about this group is that most of these riders are from all over the city and all different ethnicities and backgrounds. The one thing we all have in common is that we like bikes and like to have fun. I've been involved with the group for a year now and i love that i haven't seen any fights and white/black/hispanic/asian all hang together pretty well. We all love to ride bikes at night and hang.
But the stealing is cutting into our fun. And its totally an easy fix. I'd hate not being able to find places to buy beer downtown. Soon Ramirez Liquors on Soto & Whittier will cut us off. Then we'll really be screwed. Just not that many late night stores open.

@ Porter - someone did step in and do something right then. It was Stevo and he paid for the beer so the store wouldn't call the cops.

It happened. Please get over it and move on. Next time, should there be a next time, do what you've been saying all along you'd do if it happens again and then worry about the repercussions. But for now, give the man the credit he deserves for a great ride he put together. I'll be damned if a couple of riders will take the spotlight.
PS some of you really need to get off your "TALL BIKES."

fireworks were a problem again when someone let off a bunch of black cats (or something similar) on what looked like someones front door before running back into the pack to ride away on his bmx. when they were going off someone leaned out a two story window and started yelling things at the perp who flipped them off and spewed some racial epithets. you guys are too cool, man.

everyone... it was a great ride... leave it at that. i have "borrowed" before... out of necessity... and that doesnt make me better or worse. worry about your own self. of course, when the integrity of the entire group comes into play other factors must be considered... but come on... leave it be. focusing too much on the negative.. not enough on the positives.

@PC, the first hijack may have possibly been a misunderstanding, and the second was clearly some guy goofing and succeeding. But the route was still deliberately detoured. Whether they were being malicious or not, it doesn't matter. People got hurt because of the first one. That's fucked up, no matter which way you look at it.
As for the thieves. They're assholes that have to live with themselves.
I don't understand why assholes, like them, get surprised when they get called out because of their jackass actions? I realize they're the same people that cheat at solitaire, or throw trash out their windows, and poop on their own lawns. But they MUST be used to being called fucking assholes by now.

everybody here, who say it is no big deal that some stoled some beer, let it go. let by-gones be by gones.
All you folks who think it ok to let the issue of stealing go.
Please, go to SteveO and give him back the money that he paid for the stolen beer. While your doing that, give Harry the money that he paid for the last person who stoled beer at that last ride.

I said "borrowed" out of necessity but not once did i allude to beer. so please, keep your assumptions to yourself and stop being a dumbass. I understand what you mean... and I'm not trying to justify their actions, because to be honest with you it's jeopardizing everyone. But what I am saying is... it's already close to Monday... let it go. Shit. If you really feel that bad about it help Stevo. I, personally, don't see any reason why I should be paying for someone elses fuck up... and you don't see me here trying to lynch them either.
Focus on the positives.

I'd like to suggest we call it a day. We've beaten this horse to death and have heard many perspectives and opinions. Lets leave it at that if possible and hope the next one goes even better.
Several people have given me some money for the beer and that's cool. If you want to give me a buck the next time we meet, that's cool. If i get even, i'll say thanks to that next person and direct them to Harry.
Thanks for the props for putting the ride on. I really did have fun and learned a lot.
