The People's Ride
Thread started by skd at 07.21.08 - 11:23 am

LA Critical Mass rides earlier this month, 6:30pm instead of 7:30pm. The People's Ride was designed for those who cannot make the earlier ride times. This ride is similar to Critical Mass in scope and ideology, but with more organization. A route will be determined and disseminated to the riders. Again this is a slower ride, not for messenger racers or speed demons, though they are encouraged to ride with us and cork intersections. The ride usually ends near the start point, close to a Metro Station or bus line.

Che was a murderer, his face ironically represents capitalism, he was a revolutionary, his ideas are outdated, he was an expert at the implementation and theory behind '50s and '60s style guerrilla warfare, and his politics are timeless yet at the same time do not offer an answer to our problems today.

I don't like rule 1 of The People's ride, "do not steal from the establishments on our rest stops. If you steal, don't show up for this ride."

From copyright to the CVC to whatever else, we do illegal things all the time, get over it.

Secondly, food should never be a commodity. We should organize rides to steal food and give it away.

I gave stolen food away tonight and it felt great.

As for Che, he would hate the ride.

LAMC is too early for me.

This works better.

I like the rules posted and the planning. The spirit of them at least.

Che killed in a war. His war against imperialism is still going on.

Che was fighting the US-backed dictator Batista in a war. How many people did Batista kill in his aim to suppress opposition to his years of authoritative rule?

Batista was the murderer and the US government was his partner.

Che was a Physician from Argentina who fought US imperialism and their puppet dictators who used mass murder, torture and imprisonment.

George Washington killed British, his own people, does that make him a murder?

It is hardly a surprise that during the armed struggle against Batista, and then after the triumphant entry into Havana, Guevara murdered or oversaw the executions in summary trials of scores of people—proven enemies, suspected enemies, and those who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You folks can fight over politics all you want.

Here is some history of the photo used.
Alberto Korda took the now famous picture of Che in 1960 at a funeral of those who perished in a French freighter in Havana harbor. He titled the photo, "Heroic Guerrilla".

Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick took the photo and in 1967 created the stylized picture with the red background. Fitzpatrick admired Che and met him in Ireland, during one of Che's visits in 1962. In one conversation, Che revealed that his grandmother was Irish and his great-grandmother was from Galway, Ireland.

Interestingly, present at the same funeral where the famous picture of Che was taken, was the French philosopher, socialist Jean-Paul Sartre. He also was an admirer of Che.

And as far as Foucault is concerned, he is too old school. We need a Georgio Agamben, Hannah Arendt, Chomsky, Zinn, etc.

Thanks Dan for pulling the trailer.
For those who were concerned, Stillline was helping someone who broke a chain near Fairfax. He did not get lost nor did he get dragged into a leather bar in West Hollywood.

Thankfully there were no fireworks, beer stealing from Rock and Roll Ralphs or stealing from riders. Good job everyone!
