ALL CITY REGISTER YOUR BIKE DAY
Thread started by barleye at 08.25.08 - 7:59 pm

in response to Handbone's bike being stolen....

how about an ALL CITY REGISTER YOUR BIKE DAY?

meet at police stations all over town, register your bike, then everyone meet up for a big ass ride....

is this a lame idea?

reply

best idea. i was just writing out a big thing to post for a register your bike day.

HANDBONE

I called a couple of LAPD stations a while back and they do not have the registration material. They told me to go to a bike shop.

Ironically, I was able to get a bicycle license and registration from the City of Santa Monica, cost $2.00. It is good throughout the state.

This is a good idea, though. We should try to find out where, if there a bicycle shops that do it, and what their hours are.

Yes, it's a lame idea, but I know you all mean well. Registration is an archaic law used only by asshole cops to harass group rides. Just write down your serial number and lock your bike well. That's all you can really do.

If it does happen on the first Saturday of the month, we should definitely do it.

The cops always find stolen bikes or arrest some guy for another crime who is riding a stolen bike, sometimes the registration sticker is pulled off, but the serial number is in their system. They run the serial number through their computer, and if nothing comes up, they auction the bikes.

If the serial number comes back with your name and phone number, since you registered the bike, they call you. You come down, show them id and take your bike home.

There's a lot of inherent hypocrisy to this.

We want the cops to leave us alone when we break traffic laws, vandalize private property, shoplift, and generally act disruptive.

But when OUR private property gets lifted, those motherfuckers better be working in shifts to get it back.

Fuck cops. We don't need them in our lives. Period.

+1 hatehills & pc.

The rest of you kind of sound like a bunch of little brats. Cops are only good when you 'need' them, other wise 'fuck the police', right? Lame.

I like the idea, in concept... in the sense of overwhelming the police stations for something they no longer can provide. Not for actually getting licenses.

All bikes have serial numbers now, write that shit down. THAT IS YOUR 'LICENSE'. When you get your bike stolen, you can report that number to the police. If they recover your bike, it will be returned to you. If you can count on such luxury. Usually you're just shit out of luck.

I believe the standard procedure is put this sticker on the bottom of the bottom bracket. Where the thief won't find it is my guess.

In regards to the riding two abreast. LB has it written in their Muni Code,

10.48.040 Riding in a group.
Persons operating bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast, except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. (Prior code § 3410.203).

LB has the best cops and the friendliest streets in the world yet again!
Cause they love bicyclists! Read it for yourselves.....

Eddie, did you get your sticker in the city of LA? I'm trying to figure out if LA has their own sticker. If they use the State of California one, I guess I could get that one anywhere.

Info taken from another post:

Central Division on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-8pm. You need to bring in your ID, $3.00 and your bike receipt, if you have it. It's ok if you don't have your bike receipt, but you will fill out something giving the make and model, serial number, size of frame and tires and color of the bike. The address is: 251 E. 6th Street, LA 90014, LA and 6th. Phone is: 213-972-1298.

IMO we should all register our bikes, get lights, do all the things we're expected to do by law. If an officer desides to write you an unfair ticket you can fight it. Show the judge that you did your best to comply with all bicycling laws and that your intent was to conform to the laws. Judges actually listen to what you have to say unlike many officers.

I called a few pd's and am can't get a straight answer.....West L.A. (3 officers and a detective) said the LAPD no longer issues bike licenses....

Pacific Div. (officer Reyes) said they don't either. I mentioned 26.01 municipal code and a friend receiving a citation....she handed it off to the Juvenille division....

if you have a few minutes, call one of the numbers on the link here and ask when and where they issue bike licenses.....if they wanna fuck with us, let's fuck em right back.

Officer Garcia at LAPD (very helpful) said this: 4861 West Venice
Los Angeles, CA 90019, just east of La Brea. they're out of the forms but should have more in a week.

As long as the forms are in stock, $3, bring your bike and they'll do it 24/7. 213-473-0476
