The Obey bike is OK. I'm not feeling the gold but at least it's a solid-looking bike. Bonus points for lugs, threaded steerer, and curved fork.

The KidRobot bike is just a disaster in my opinion. Ridiculous price, especially for TIG-welded oversize tubes. Weird compact-ish geometry so you get to have mad seatpost. No integrated headsets for me, and what's up with the painted/powder-coated components? And to top it off: useless lock, and custom valve caps? Huh?

If I had $6000 to throw down on some boutique-y cross-branded bike, I'd go for one of the Paul Smith Mercians:

Paul Smith/Mercian Track

Paul Smith/Mercian Touring Bike

Yeah, same feelings about the Obey. Nice frame and fork, don't know about the colors.

Those Mercians look nice.

OK it's no secret that I'm almost completely clueless to what's "in" with the fixies and what's "out", but what's with the one aero wheel and one spoke wheel on the $6k toy? Or should I call it a chick magnet? Are these aero wheels really that hard to find?

i think the answer is no, and no...

pop culture is just looking for another fad to start, and fixies seem like they haven't been pillaged by the marketing types yet...

OMG!! Kanye West is the new SUV from Chevrolet.

Regarding the Obey bike: From the standpoint of someone that enjoys customizing bikes, black and gold is one of those color schemes that is first into your mind and usually quickly dismissed as FUCKING DONE TO DEATH!! Burt did it way back when with his Firebird and then everyone else has done that shit with every other bit of paraphernalia until recently we all look like a pack of foiled out Black&Milds! Wow!

All about the neon.

ahhh I get it!

You get more street creed if you don't have a brake on your bike. And you'll get even more street creed if you have just one aero wheel! It gives the message, "hey man I'm just on the streets scraping by, can't afford another aero wheel cause the man is keeping me down."

I get now!

User1
12.17.07 - 2:36 pm

reply

It's cool that Kanye got one but I always pictured him on something more classic. I'll even be more impressed when a paparazzo takes a photo of him trackstanding or riding more than five miles.

The Aerospoke thing seems useless to me on the street, someone who knows better/uses them please explain. I always thought it was a fun accessory you add to reference BMX mag wheels, much like the way top-tube pads recall the pads you had to put on your BMX bike during a race.

cabhauler

What's the next bike fad?

I like to be bleeding edge.

I better get on fix push soon before riding fixed no longer gets me free sex, beer, drugs, and entrance to VIP clubs in 10 cities worldwide.

Yeah...I ride for image.

kyber
12.17.07 - 2:44 pm

reply

Six G's on any vehicle, of any type is extremely excessive.
I ride all my bikes until they crash into the ground.
Then it's "back-to-the-lab" again, with some discards from dumpsters and police auctions.

bentstrider

@cabhauler:

Aerospoke = looks cool. I like them. It looks bad ass when you're riding a wheelie. And they're sufficiently strong to hold up to a little abuse. But don't buy a used one. Especially if it has a Doom sticker on it.

I'm a full 1/4 blooded OG flatbiller and I remember calling my bros bro back in 1982. Don't know who the first redneck to co-opt bro was but I think it was Cliffdiver Johnson, famous flatbiller motohead of the late 70s.
