Thread Box:
Cubz do it better
Thread started by franz at 12.2.07 - 4:21 pm

I have to assume this is somewhere on one of the wolfpack threads, but I don't have time to look through them, so for the masses.

Bike Snob on Wolfpack

The Cubz were making fun of wolfpack sweatshirts way before it was cool. I even went and won their race, (the two speed division... we had a different course... you remember right?) Oh well it's still funny.

This guy that writes the Bike Snob is pretty funny. He kind of reminds me of Mark Morford from SF Gate, http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/morford/ but less funny. Granted Mark has quite a bit more material to cull from.

I'm really not a reader of Mr Snob as I'm not really into the fixie scene. Yeah I do find the minimalist of some of these bikes kind of attractive, but I just can't get behind riding a bike with no brakes. Something about relying on just the back wheel for stopping turns me off too. So I was wondering, for those that do read these posts, can you point out where he talks about the top bar pads? I'm betting that's got to be pretty funny!

bike snob is a pro cyclocross racer. he remains anonymous because of it.

and just because you ride fixed doesnt mean you can't ride with a hand brake, it just means you don't need one...

Allan, half of BSNYC's audience consists of people who get a sadistic thrill from watching him skewer the urban fixed gear subculture, and the other half consists of members of that culture who get a masochistic thrill out of being skewered by him. Trust me, you'll fit right in.

As for myself, I'll just keep being the observer of the various MR stables.
I'll make it a New Years' resolution to make it out to each brand of MR ride.
Whether it be Cubz eatin' me for food, a Pack o'Wolves rippin' me to bits, a Badger chasing me w/a 2x4,
the South Bay cruisers chuckin' me into the harbor, myself chasin' a tweeker w/a 2x4, I'll make it one of my missions to get myself into every ride possible.

BSNYC is fucking hysterically funny, if you ask me. The time he was talking about carbon fiber bottle cage, being super hi tech and indispesible because it will shave seconds off your trackstand, I nearly lost my lunch.

I'm not sure he's a pro cyclocross racer, where did you see that? But I know I he does race, however he normally mentions being lapped, although Im sure that happnes to a lot of Cat 1 cyclocrossers.

Cyclocross bikes are the new fixed.

I could have sworn that he mentioned that he rides a fixie from what I read on the first link above.

As far riding with different groups, I try to ride and make just about every ride I can. I don't avoid a ride because I don't feel I wouldn't click with a group. It's more of will I be able to hang?!? LOL

I do find it very entertaining when I hear some talk on fixies. At times it sounds like they've discovered the holy grail of biking! I wonder where their enthusiasm will be in 5 years?

there's really no good logic in that though. who's to say all the bandwagon kids riding fixed right now won't become more immersed in cycling in general? they might use a bike to commute to school/work - they might like riding so much that they eventually pick up a geared road bike for distance/endurance riding. they might get into racing. there are so many facets of cycling that a kid could possibly get into.

cars are expensive - i could see a lot of these kids relying on the bike as their main mode of transportation, even if the "fixie fad" does wear off.

I don't know, I have a mtn bike, a road/'cross bike, and a fixed gear (with brakes). And I love riding the fixed much more than the other two. It's quiet and simple, it's that simple.

My Empella is THE CROSS BIKE... please try to remember that in the future.

As for bikes not being quiet, bring them into your nearest bike cooking area, maybe you need a tune up. Susan (not pictured above) is as quiet and smooth as... a... smooth thing. Except her BB been acting up but, I blame europe for that one.

I've always prided myself on keeping my bikes well buttered and whisper quiet, no brake squeal, instantaneous shifts, but it wasn't until I started riding a fixed gear with, well, a fixed chainline that I achieved the nirvana of true silence except for the cacophony of the city. But out in the desert I hear nothing but the valves of my heart clicking at 180 bpm.

I'm in Europe, although I've been ostracized from bike culture in Italy by Stalinist Scum, I have the upper hand as any American Intelligentsia knows how much better any other country is than the United States.

Cx may be the old fixed but it's the new BMX which is the new fixed that LA doesn't yet seem to know about (actually I have the inside story on this, NYC barely even knows this, so if we want we can beat them to it [therefore claiming the copping our style] I for one will be stealing someones unused bmx asap for the AIDS Lifecycle). So it's new in that it will be in the not to un-distant future the un-new thing!

This is what happens when I'm thrown out of a bike culture, which I might add, barely exists in this funderstorm forsaken country. I get bored and start reading, lately I've been reading a collection or Orwells essays, short stories from Kafka, and short stories by Annie Proulx who wrote Bareback Mtn, all of these alternatively. Sometimes I think I'm going insane but than I sit back in a piazza with 6 or 12 beers and look at the pier pressure photos and know I'll be all right.

Man that is not to uncomplex, PC help me.
