Thread Box:
"Bike There" Google maps!!!
Thread started by redridinghood at 02.28.08 - 11:53 pm

Here is an opportunity to ask the kind and benevolent folks at Google to add "Bike There" as a choice to Google maps along with "drive there" and "take public transportation there.

Sign the petition here and pass it on, I did!!

thats a genius idea,
i hate when i forget to check that little avoid freeway box,
sometimes i map out routes and im halfway through my ride and then i refer to my map and it tells me to get on the the 10 freeway, which probably wouldn't be a good idea

www.bikemetro.com for now will mostly work.

It gives you the elevation data, but it doesn't give the ability to customize your route by dragging like google maps, so you can avoid hills.

but, I'm sure alot of ya knew that already.

that's so weird since they have the cyclist option for their pedometer.

Bikemetro still down. Maybe time for them to rewrite in PHP ;)?

Signed the petition last year (#16422) with this comment:
Use open Wiki-like methods to gather road metrics (bike safety, rider experience level, city maintenance needed, troublespots, etc)

Can't sign again but would have added this, so might someone who agrees do so:

  • Los Angeles is huge and while the best do, not all of us can bike from one end to the other and back. Consider adding 'Mixed Mode - Bike + Public Transit' to solve the 'last mile' problem: Offer several transit + bike routes, let user pick a transit selection, edit resulting bike routes.

  • +1 on elevation stats (particularly total elevation gain) for bike legs.

why doesnt everyone just use mapmyride.com? By far the most robust mapping tool for my bike ive seen... you can even upload routes to your garmin, or sync it with facebook to show off how much you bike :D

i doubt we will see google maps doing good bicycle routes any time soon. A good bicycle routes needs to take into account road conditions (such as quality of the road and room for a cyclist to safely ride on the side of the road), changes in elevation, and avoid hectic intersections.

Basically they would require a ton of data collection from cyclists who ride the streets.

If we had a really good bike route/path/lane system, it would be easy since it would just tell a cyclist the fastest way to get to one of them.

mapmyride.com = SUCK
gmap pedometer = suck
google maps = suck
current bike maps in LA = SUCK

EVERYONE TAKE NOTE, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT LA NEEDS:

Portland by Bicycle (NE Area)
Found here

Cannot tell you how useful it is to have a PRINTED piece of paper in your pocket with all the best info on it related to biking. Fuck iPhones, fuck computers, fuck anything that requires interactivity. Pull this piece of paper out of your pocket and generate a route of "low traffic" no hill roads in 5 seconds with confidence. DONE

Oh yeah, main problem is they only have these maps in Portland. But you can get them at every bike store & co-op in the city and they are FREEE. I know right? Ridiculous.

We need maps like the "Portland by Bicycle" maps with low traffic roads off the main streets that people can be informed of and it would be best to have these maps stocked in all the bike related businesses, not just hosted on a website only a few people know about.

This project could start online using google maps "my maps" feature and once enough information is gathered we could generate area maps for cyclists in LA.

Kinds of information that we would need to gather for each area of town:
-bike shops
-bike co-ops
-smooth low traffic roads
-safe bike paths
-dangerous intersections
-narrow roads
-bumpy roads
-hills

I think we could pull it off here, and there are a million of those "gem" roads hidden off the beaten path.

It's a matter of exposing good roads to bike on and making them known to all cyclists. Then it seems to me like people wouldn't think it's so bad to bike in this city which would put more and more people on bikes instead of cars.

Borfo I'm sure you know a great deal of the good roads to bike on, I'm going to look up a way to have a group managed map that we can all add this information to- almost like a wiki but a map.

If anyone has any exp with this please speak up!
