Carrying my bike on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Question
Thread started by Noble Experiment at 10.17.07 - 1:11 pm

hi. I'm also a n00bie on the board from the South Bay (Torrance, Carson, Gardena mostly)

If you experienced bringing your bike on the pacific surfliner, can you help out on your expeirence about it? I read on their site they have bike racks like that of the Portland MAX lines.

Their website FAQ link about carrying bikes is useful if they can provide me which Pacific Surfliner train number carries a bike rack.

http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=am2Copy&pagename=Amtrak%2Fam2Copy%2FSimple_Copy_Page&cid=1080080554487

I'm taking the amtrak to San Diego this weekend to a conference so I'm taking my bike with me as i'm only sticking around the gaslamp quarter. Driving there just sucks because of the guaranteed traffic on the I-5 at North County SD. Last time I went on the pacific surfliner, they didn't have bike racks, but the one before I took it, they actually did have bike racks.

Answers and help appreciated as their 800-usa-rail line is a crapshoot to get an immediate answer to find out which pacific surfliner train number carries a bike rack.

calling is probably th ebest bet though.

I'm pretty sure the ones that connect with the Metrolink have bike racks... or at least they're supposed to.

when I took a train up to SF a few months ago with my bike, I just took it on board and locked it to the handrail on the lower level. I was going to pack it up in a bike box and all that bu in the end this worked way better and I didn't even have to take itt apart att all...

The cars have space for 3 bikes per car. Its a standing rack, so you put you front wheel up top and loop the lil hook through both wheels. There are usually about 3 to 4 cars that have the racks, so get to the train early to make sure you get a spot. I got the very last rack left and some of the employees don't want you to just have your bike hooked up somewhere in the car where it does not belong.

One more thing. If someone has their luggage in the space where a bike should be, then just kindly remove it for them and say, "Moving someone's luggage. Come get it if its yours."

whird.

I called Amtrak an hour ago and they told me most of their lines have bike racks. However, the agent said it's usually better to claim the spot so it's best for me to arrive there an hour and a half to two hours before I board.

Locking up my bike to a handrail would be my last resort and I had a damaged spoke on my backwheel when I took a bike I ordered on craigslist from Washington DC to Baltimore on the MARC. After fixing it, I gave it to my friend at Bmore to have. The bike I bought at DC only cost me $40 at shady grove (much thanks to that guy). It was an 18 speeder with a ridiculously heavy frame. This was last year though.

Riding it to SD would be awesome except I'd be hella tired to the sd convention center at night lol.

I'm chill from Raymond that they use standing racks on the pacific surfliner.

Many Thanks for the replies =)
