I checked it out. It told me to take Olympic to go from La Brea to DTLA. I'm a fan of 4th/a bike friendlier road. Does anyone here take Olympic?

The thrill of this rad addition diminishes when you look at a bike map of LA through Google's lens. Funny how very few of our streets are deemed bike friendly. You know? Funny like when your rim comes off while you’re pulling off an extended kickass wheelie. Hah.

Yeah, it really shows the problem with LA's grab-bag approach to bike infrastructure. On the plus side, its good that we have a great way to show the authorities where we need bike lanes/etc, like the Backbone.

4th also has a bunch of potholes closer to La Brea.

the intersection of muirfield and 4th alone is enough for me to consider it a bike UN-friendly route

According to Google, if you ask for bike directions, it will program a route with the flattest elevation possible.

Just did one from my place in Hesperia to the Metrolink in Rancho, nothing but an assload of twists and turns on fire-roads that may or may not have been washed out by flash floods.
And notice the default location has to be San Francisco, plenty of other bike-mecca's to choose from.

Well, Google's HQ is Palo Alto, right, so it would make sense for the default to be San Fran, like almost everything else Google does.

Hopefully this tool will get more comprehensive as time goes on.
The routes it gives you for distance are so twisty and winding, it's kind of ridiculous. It also gives you time for the ride in non stop riding time. it says 12 days, almost 13 to ride form here to Boston. It would be cool if there was an option for maximum riding per day or something. In city, the times it gives you are the other way around, it says an hour and a half from DTLA to the Bikerowave (at a decent clip, not quite hustle, it takes a little under an hour) Or from the Bikerowave to the Santa Monica Pier as 1/2 an hour (maybe 20 min at most).

Also it prefers bike lanes to side streets, which is kind of silly in many parts of LA, but that's because our infrastructure is ass backwards.
