At NYC, I'm using their Bike Share program

I'd post pics but I forgot my camera.

Riding through East Village and Lower East Side on Allen and Delancy streets through NYC traffic made me realize how safe I felt riding a bike here. Where as home in Los Angeles, We're targets. I'd equate riding my bike through Lower East Side like riding my bike through Torrance. Something's wrong here in L.A. and we need a bike share program like this and make Wilshire and Pico blvds as comfortable as riding in Allen and Delancey Streets.

do they supply you with locks, if so what kind?

I don't know if they supplied locks but NY BikeShare is only a 4 day demonstration program. It's purpose is to advocate and create demand for a permanent bikeshare program like they have in Paris and Barcelona.

To borrow a bike you had to give your driver's license and credit card numbers.

Still makes me wonder why people would even bother owning cars in that city anyway.
It's even funnier when some companies think the overhang of a 53' won't smack a parked object, or the side of a building.

NYC=Good for bikes, horseback, and public transit/Bad for anything oversized and equipped with an engine.

I mean, those countless rap videos shot there ought to give people a clue.
Driving 2 mph in an Escalade, city lights shining up the chrome, they're sure as hell not faking that one!!

They didn't provide me locks. I was only allowed to park my bike at any of the four stops at East Village and I was only limited to 30 min per stop. I heard the reception was really positive and they'll start using those rent a bikes soon like those in Berlin.

Hey, I love New York. I lived in Manhattan for six years. But it ain't bicycle heaven. I've been hit by cars four times that I remember in NYC and have yet to have the experience in LA (I know, it's only a matter of time, but what the fuck...) LES is about as mellow as it gets... Try riding in midtown during rush hour and a yellow cab will hit you and then try to charge you for running up their meter.

Eh, nevermind my above rant then.
It seems as though those cabs will try to hit anything.
The freeways in that area are a damned, deathtrap as well.
The exit-sign for the 695/So&So Bridge was posted about 300 feet from the exit.
I nearly spilled it there after having nearly missed it.
Luckily, it was 2AM/est, and traffic was light, save for a UPS, day-cab jack-ass behind me.
After that hair-raising experience, it's no wonder that some companies are training drivers specifically for NYC-operations.

Not me though, I'll make like the Dixie Chicks and stick to the Wide-Open spaces.
