I knew this thread was by bentstrider simply by the misplaced comma in the title.

Well, I'm basically working and paying for it that way.
According to the FAFSA, I made too much money last year!!!!
So, I figure if I just pay as I go and not fuck up too hard, then I should at least have a fighting chance.
I'm only going back to school for something else due to a combination of a truck-rollover+shit-economy.
Otherwise, I'd drive cross-country for 20-30 years then switch careers at 50 or 60.

no you don't. I know a guy who is that age now who has been driving since your age. He would advise against that.

Old guys will advise against anyone creeping into their profession and knocking them out of their seat.
The way I see it, other career-opportunities have been pretty much eliminated for me due to other reasons listed in previous threads.
If I'm destined to be stuck behind a desk shuffling papers and hitting keys, then my life would become pretty short.
Not to mention I enjoyed truck-driving due to it being an easy way to get to see other places around the country fairly easily.
Yeah, I could just take time-off from a high-paying career and fly there, but I'm not in the captains chair, so fuck that.

actually he's a local driver, not cross country. delivers cement. he could give a fuck about the young dudes coming up. He would just say, trust me, you don't wanna be 50 years old driving a truck. much better ways to see the world.
onelessfixie03.14.09 - 12:56 am

Yes, I understand what he could be saying, but then again does he like his job?
I know when I was driving local from June of last year, up until January of this year, it was Hell.
Wall-to-wall traffic jams, shit-drivers on a daily basis, and the bullshit of the rail/ship-yards was enough for me to say "never again" to that style of driving.
I would agree that truck-driving after 30 would be a bad thing if you're the type that wants to settle down, get into a relationship, and have kids.
But for me, I don't envision any of that shit happening to me.
25 and still single, nothing holding me down.
