Fixed Project
Thread started by imachynna at 04.30.09 - 9:36 pm

So, I got a Medici, and I don't have use for the shitty gears on my Giant (which I removed). Because of that, I'm trying to convert it into a fixed gear for training. However, after adding all the parts I'll need, it sounds like I should just get a new bike (even though I don't want to). Does this sound right? Sounds like a load of crap to me.

26" fixed rims- $175
Tires/ tubes- $30-40
Crank- $90
Chain- $10
Brake- $15-20
Lock (for other rim)- $65
Cog/ Lockring- $30?

Which brings a total of $430.

I can get a new bike with that! This sounds wrong...

reply

AND if I get a new crank, I MIGHT need a new BB, right? Add that onto the total.

Why do you need a new crank? And get a crosslever from Athena for $10. Consult me. Actually, Fax me.

all you need is a rear rim wich will cost you $90 <---that comes with generic cog and lockring. get a bmx chain which runs $10 (find out what kind of chain size your chainring takes first. it would probably 1/8).

$100 - $150 is all you need.

I don't want brand new parts that bad. Only the 26" rims. The rest can be used, I could care less. That's why I'm asking... does everything have to be that price!!?!?? Haha!

imachynna
04.30.09 - 10:36 pm

reply

26" fixed wheel- $175 - this one is probably a must
Tires/ tubes- $30-40 - this too
Crank- $90 - only if you switch to 1/8"
Chain- $10 - same as cranks
Brake- $15-20 - use one off the bike already
Lock (for other rim)- $65 - not necessarily. just don't lock up in stupid places
Cog/ Lockring- $30? - yeh, that's about right

you can stay on 3/32" chain and use your original cranks and chain, which will save you some, or you could go to BMX cranks/chainring if it's gonna be a beater or whatever to learn on, and you MUST have 1/8", those can be had pretty cheaply.

if you need to get rid of your giant put a price on it. don't ditch your gears for training purposes.

Hahaha, what I said must have sounded funny. Lemme correct myself. Riding fixed vs free on a day to day basis for short distances and errands, etc, will be a little more of a work out. The Medici with beautiful gears will be for longer distance (real) training. It's like mini training and real training. But I can't get rid of the Tiny Giant! It's a 42, and I'll never find anything as small or comfortable!

imachynna

have you considered a single speed conversion kit or are you decided on fixed? if you want to go totally bootleg, you can just put a 26" fixed wheel on the back, but it's not going to be everything you want from it.

if its a workout you want, you can get a hi tensile steel mongoose fixie from performance for $272.

they dont have measured sizes, they come in XS, S, M, L....
looks like these are children's sizes, though:

Thanks Dingo. :)

I don't have any 26" hoops, but these are the rims I want. The only 26" fixed rims I've seen/ found. Although I'd probably get plain silver ones, not white. As for colored chains, not my thing. I'm going more for practicality and functional, not aesthetics. (Although I do hand it to some people for having both.)
Oh and it turns out the 175$ includes tires/ tubes, so that's 30$ out of the equation.

chynna, all you need is one fixed 26'' wheel(100$?) cog(15$) and lockring(10$) leave your old brakes/brake levers and thats it. you dont need an extra lock, if your worried about your front wheel get a quick release and take it off and lock it with everything else.

And I want to ride someone's fixed just to see what it's like, but no one's bike is ever small enough : {

OMG adorable!

I actually feel like that bike would be...TOO SMALL for me!!! And that's pretty epic because that never happens! At VCM I met a girl who was 4'9 and I was amazed. I rode her bike and it was alarmingly tiny. I think she had a 650 in front and a 700 in the back? I don't remember, but it was some sort of combination.

What's your inseam? I was looking up the Heidis and found a bunch of forums talking about them for ladies with 26" inseams who were 5'2. 5'2! That seems so TALL. I have a 28" inseam and I'm 4'10 - I feel like a freak now *_*
