15 Year Old Shot and Killed for His Bike

Just read this on latimes.com. It makes me incredibly sad esp. since I rode past that intersection twice yesterday, once before and once after, and there was no indication that anything had happened.

Homicide detectives are searching for two men who stole a bicycle from a 15-year-old boy in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood, then fatally shot him and wounded an 11-year-old girl.
Miguel Machuca of Los Angeles was riding his bike with a friend on North Mission Road near North Broadway about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday when he was approached by two men, according to Los Angeles Police Sgt. Kristin Hagerty and a Los Angeles County coroner’s investigator.
After demanding the boys’ bikes, one of the men opened fire and shot Machuca in the chest, Hagerty said. The gunfire also struck the back of a girl standing nearby.
The two victims were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. Machuca was pronounced dead at the hospital; the girl, whose name was not given, was in stable condition.

damn that shit sucks. about two years ago another bicyle rider was shot down in the Lincoln heights area as well that sucks tho he was only a kid

Fucking brigands, they need to be caught and released into a special game preserve.
Seeing as how they resorted to mortal violence for a bicycle, it's highly likely they were withdrawaled junkies and the weapon was most likely stolen as well.

This is really sad. Low life scumbags.
This can happen to anyone anywhere. scum bags are everywhere.
Travel in groups If possible . Try to ride in areas that are more Crowed if alone.
ride leaders if you say no rider left behide enforce it. don't just say it so people can go to your ride. You never know what can happen to someone whose left behide.
This happen to me and my boyfriend we got dropped and totally got left in a city that we didn't know . All be cause we didn't take a red light.

Why does avoiding riding in certain areas seem to me like handing the streets to the criminal element?
Supporting neighborhood cycling groups like Eastside Bike Club seems more proactive

You can ride through there if you want. I support efforts to improve safety in these neighborhoods, but what happens when the people living there don't want to change the way they do business? When it comes down to me and a guy with a gun, I know that no amount of good intentions and dedication and karma are going to stop that bullet. Stubbornly riding through areas that are known to be dangerous doesn't seem like a solution. If you have to go through there, do it; you'll probably be fine anyway. If you don't have to go through there, why tempt fate?
That said, I have ridden around South and East LA without running into any problems myself (except for one certain incident I was scolded for talking about). If you mind your own business and keep aware of your surroundings, you'll more than likely be fine.

* above post is with regards to commuting and exercise riding, not so much party / social rides. I don't even know what to think of group rides myself anymore.

Apparently, according to what was said on the other thread, this was a gang related crime. This all sucks nonetheless.

Silverlake, Venice, Echo Park, most of Downtown used to be "don't drive through at night" neighborhoods...not so much anymore. People did anyway.

Don't know if the recent clarification that it was gang-related will do anything to quell any new-found fears of riding through these areas at night.
Even if gang members are out to hit rivals, there's always that unfortunate chance of stray rounds.
Then there's also the issue of "copy-cats" and "wannabes" that will pull of hard acts of violence in order to increase their reputation points to the hot-shots and other persons/groups of interest.

Get them involved in it.
Community clean-ups, neighborhood watch programs, direct citizen involvement in the upkeep, restoration, and marketing or mothballing of dilapidated structures/residences.
Essentially, the aim is to involve as many local residents as possible before looking towards outside help.
Sort of like the push to get BP to hire residents for oil-spill clean-up as opposed to the hiring of people from waaaaaay out of the area.
