arizona border ride(fubar ride)
Thread started by louisiana at 11.5.09 - 1:28 pm

I am considering a ride from the santa monica pier to the Arizona border and back.date sometime in early 2010 and need people who are down. i have a route and will make it a 3 day there 1 day hotel and shower in blythe,ca 4 day back allowing for flats and oter bike problems.i am willing to pull a trailer with bike shit and food but need a support car and other people to ride(about 20 down motha fucas).list your name here and what you want to do this ride for and how many miles youve done max in one ride(i.e. taco tuesdays termins de estes 81 miles).my route goes up top to big bear so be strong.email alacazandrATyahooDOTcom with fubar ride in the subject if you need something that you scared to ask on the thread(wimp)

What?

You don't want to muscle it up Chiriaco Summit?

The 10 from Banning to the border and beyond used to be my playground before I became addicted to blow.

I'll look into it, aside from the 10 and some backwater roads, there's really no other way to get to the Colorado River along that route.

Yeah, the 10 was my truckers route, once we got past the Beaumont CHP scale house, we opened throttle all the way to Phoenix.

55 for trucks and 70 for cars could bite my ass!!!

Bikes are allowed on the highway any time there isn't a nearby alternative road, such as a few portions of PCH over here.

I'm down to ride, but you're going to have to stretch this out a bit more. It'll take at least five days, especially with Ridazz who've never done this sort of intense riding before. This is on par with the kind of riding the ALC kids do, and they started training for their fully supported ride last month. They also take a full week to ride 550 miles.

Oh shit nevermind, I totally misread that. I thought you said 1 day there. hahaha, good to know you're not that crazy. the eight day ride seems totally fine.

But it will still need some sort of training. We should get some weekend double century action on at least two months before the actual ride.

I like the idea of this ride due to it being a route that not many are too familiar with.

As I've said in other posts, the atypical touring routes are always heavily situated near ocean and such(nice and all, but that has become a little cliche for me).

Out here, you'll get to pass through mining towns, whatever's left of the WW2 desert training center(Gen. Patton trained all of the troops that fought the Germans in North Africa here), and the scenery is quite awesome over here in the Eastern SoCal enclave known as the Lower Desert!!!

Well, I'll be hoisting Old Glory on the tail if I'm good to go.

The sight of the flag waving as we roll to and from will be somewhat of enough deterrence towards anyone trying to kill the buzz on this particular ride.

What's so lame about it?

If this has anything to do with the Liberal vs. Conservative/Repunks vs Demoncraps, then that's a piss poor reasoning.

How about the US and MR flags instead.

Isn't Old Glory the US flag?

I think it's lame, too. And it has nothing to do with either party, political leanings, or whatever you want to call it. It has more to do with nationalistic bullshit that I wouldn't want part of.

How about unicorns, rainbows and stars?

Just so you know, what you're doing is called "touring". Its not uncommon, in fact ive done a bit of it myself. In fact, I rode through Arizona, in July heat, unsupported, on the way to eventually new york city. You might want to do some research, but you might not and learn some lessons on your own. :)

I think we got to Phoenix in 5 days. We had a host in riverside but just slept on the side of the road mostly. When you don't have a car, you can get away with a lot.

As far as training, we did very little more than a regular 20 mile commute. We weren't partying though, so you might need liver-training.

This sounds fun, Joshua tree is amazing. Ill be watching this develop. (I'm not commited to it yet)

Alright, since we seem to have gotten past the political issues, tents, stoves, food storage, fire-starting, and other things will now be the name of the game.

At Big 5, I've seen some light-tents going for $30, but these could only fit 1-3 people depending on which one you buy, but light nonetheless.
Or, we could split the load between a couple and go for the 8-person domes.

Another thing to look at would be camping stoves.
Most areas of the desert out this way have little in the way of burnable wood.
There might be leftovers from an old house or driftwood along some of the drycreek beds, but Joshua Tree branches and sagebrush will do little to cook or warm anything at night.
In this case, either some camping stoves powered by butane or kerosene will be light enough to pack along for the purpose of meal-cooking.
Or, we could also man-it-up and haul cords of firewood along with us.

Food-storage, this could be accomplished by blocks of dry-ice and the spreading out of coolers if we're going to be hauling along any meats.
If not, then grains, salt-pork, and some beans will be the meals of choice.

Thought we could add a little more self-sufficiency and just dedicate a converted Burley trailer or two to mechanical duties.

As far as water goes, camelbacks and spots on the bikeracks to carry extra, loaded bladders.
Strategically route stops towards either rest areas, truckstops, or clean flowing springs where water could be easily collected.

Sure..you could do that if feel you need to. Set up your bike now with panniers and such and weigh them down and start your training. 85+ miles on a heavy loaded bike isn't a small task

I've got 40 lbs loaded on my bike anytime I'm riding with y'all down there.

I carry the same amount in order to make myself comfy at work when I'm doing the 12 hour shifts.

I'm very certain I'll be able to pull this off and not wake up under an examination light, with the training I'm certain you've acquired, don't see how it will be a problem for you.

On another note, why all this resentment from you towards me?
If this is about all the whining from the past, then shit happens and people need to vent.

If not, then I don't know what else to say, other than "Sorry I offended you in whatever way I did."

Having done several endurance rides and the most gear I've carried is a handle bar bag, saddle bag and a loaded jersey. The longest ride was a brevet which was 128 miles and some ungodly amount of climbing 8000 ft or more. I dong remember! Most of my riding is done unencumbered and I like that. I do have aspirations to do more randonneur rides and maybe Paris-Brest-Paris in 20111 which would require a real touring bike and self support.

I like this idea and that Ridazz want to do something bigger than a typical night time social ride...no matter how heavy your bike is there is a difference to 5 mile increments with an hour stop...you'd get no where real fast. A typical 100 mile day is a pit every 20-40 miles (more often in heat for water/calories).

Realistically knowing my schedule for 2010 and my involvement with AIDS/Lifecycle, family, work, training and possibly a season of crit racing....this probably wont be a trip I would make. However...I would like to see people involved conduct themselves in a safe and sane matter. Getting caught in the middle of nowhere with no support and no food/water and possible medical emergencies or mechanical failures is just not acceptable.

Funny thing is you'll end up looking just like the pic RoadBlock posted one day that you dissed as a bunch of yuppies out for a weekend wanderlust ride or some such commentary...dong remember...

As for you and I...It isn't resentment at all. Its a general lack of compassion on my part towards someone who could be doing something with his live vs lamenting what he does not have or cannot have. A constant (for a long time) desire to hijack every thread to whine and complain about not trucking, not getting into the military.

You certainly must have more interesting things to talk about...I do see that you are trying...am I a bitch? Perhaps...perhaps.

I haven't given up on either of those things, but rather than piss and moan to the choir, I've decided to quit talking and take the fight to the two camps instead.

If I end up in prison, oh the fuck well.

Oh, and by "fight", I meant consistently hounding the two camps and putting in petitions.
So far, the only reason I slightly worry about incarceration is due to violating the "stop coming here" message.

Getting back to the part about riding though, I guess I should take into the fact that having a full on schedule and regular does take alot out of a person.

So you do what you do and make time for all the rest of everything.

I guess it's just easier for me to play around since I don't have any kids or any other major responsibilities to deal with.

That's why I see taking off from work and doing a ride of this magnitude as a relieving thing.
Out in the middle of nowhere, getting down to business, not having to deal with the typical troubles of suburbanites ruining the small town atmosphere.
I could basically just toss all my shit out the window for a minute and take in the adventure.

Did I also mention I have no real intention of ever setting root down anywhere?

glad to see chynna is down to cruss on my ride!!!!! sorry The Jen cant make it.your still welcome to train with us though.i like bentstrider's idea of taking an 8 person tent as i thought would be good myself.i already spoke to The Dude about borrowing his trailer and hes willing to let me do so.also he has a good training ride route.we will have a discussion tommorrow about all the details.riding up to hollywood sign and invading the christmas parade before doing mullholland drive.

You could say that...and he might not realize it but we have been on rides together. I would love to find a way (I'm working on it) to make money from doing what I love so that my schedule could allow for more trips. This is my third year with ALC and that alone takes a min. of 9 day off from work. Then there is 5 days of interbike and various other bike trips...maybe even the Ivory Coast Ride to End AIDS...we'll see.

Believe me, as much of a jerkoff as I've been acting, I was actually less negative a few years ago.

As I said, things will eventually turn around once the foot is inserted into the proper ass.
But for now, just read this every so often.

Well, time to bust out the Hesperia-to-Silverwood-and-back route from 1999!!!
Do that shit after my gym workout around 1am-2am for the next couple of months whilst hauling my system and I'll be above the game and over the hoop!!!

This is kind of weird, but I seem to have done more long distance rides when I was 16.
And I had shit for bikes back then too!!!

I could probably lead some of it up here, I work on weekends so it's going to be a little tight.
