I have a short trip coming up this weekend, and I wanted to bike my self to LAX with my commuter bike, as the bus I would take to get there doesn't run early enough. I would have to take bus from SM to Union station way out of the way and transfer from there. Taxis are expensive and LAX is really not all that far from me, but certainly too far to walk.

Basically what I'm getting at, is there secure facilities for bicycle parking at the airport. Does anyone know or have done this before? I tried calling and kept getting transfered to person after person who thought it was a good idea that I wanted to ride my bike, but had no clue if they had places for bike parking. Finally got transfered supposedly to someone who would know, and got their voice mail and they have not returned my call.

I was thinking of getting one of those heavy duty kryptonite new york locks with the big steel links for added security and locking extra parts like the seat with a coil.

Anyone have advice on this?

I would advise you NOT to leave your bike locked out in the open for more than a day. It will almost certainly be fucked with, in some way or another.

Maybe in 10 or 20 years, there will be secure bike parking available around the city, so we'll be able to do things like this.

I think If I remembered there's two bike lockers at the LAX/Aviation Station on the Green Line. I think I've also seen some Big Blue busses stop there too. It's not exactly at LAX because the shuttles are free and they take you to every terminal, but It's where I'd try to park a bike because they have lockers. You could also call LAX parking if they have bike lockers closer to that space-age resturaunt looking thingy.

Gary, ride to Union Station and take the Flyaway Bus to LAX for $4. It runs 24 hours and will get you there in under 40 minutes guaranteed. I've taken it during rush hour and the fucker got there in 31 minutes. How? Magic, I suppose.

Flyaway is great unless you really want to ride there. I use the Van Nuys flyaway all the time and it's great. Cheap and I can sleep on it for 30 mins!!!

Gary,

I actually have biked to LAX several times in the past. There is one bike rack at Terminal One - It is often times full but every time I went to LAX i was able to lock it up there. left it there for several days with no problems. Took off my lights, blinkies etc and stuffed in with my luggage.

I'm told that there is one other bike rack at LAX but I've never found it.

Other options - right next to terminal one is car rental place. I think it's hertz-not sure. I went over there and asked various attendents on several occassions about a year ago if I could lock my bike up in their lot and each one was fine with it - although I never actually lock it up there.

I have had parts stolen off of my bike when I left it locked out on the street overnight. If you don't use a locker, you're still taking a risk. Maybe it's not a big deal if you've got a beater, but I still would like to know that I'm coming back to a complete, functional bike.

Through contacting LACBC I was able to get an inside tip on a great spot to park securely. There is a valet parking lot near the restaurant at the center of LAX that is also by a security check point. The valet lot has a 24 security attendant, and the checkpoint has multiple 24 hour security booths with guards and cameras mounted all over them. There is a fence within eye shot of all of this, and I locked up to one of the posts. Bike spent 3 days parked with giant steel link lock through frame and front wheel, U lock securing rear wheel to frame, and steel coil through seat and rack. I arrived and bike was safe and sound with no signs of tamping, and I just got back from riding my ass home.
