Hit a car

so i was riding my fixie down crescent dr. as i was passing whole foods, a car cut me off very sharply and i had to bail in the the whole foods parking lot, as i turned(still going about 25 mph brakeless) there was another car so i ditched around it and hit another car. i scratched her car a lil bit and dented it. what rights do i have as a cyclist because i cannot afford to pay for this bitches stuff. ( shes a bitch because she has been harassing me asking for $)
what do i do
btw im 16 y o and dont have car insurance...
am i fucked?

see if your parents can help you out and work it off with chores. if its a small scratch then it wont cost much.

Looks like you learned a few lessons here. Riding brakeless is pretty dumb, but even if you had a brake and still could not avoid hitting the car you learned another lesson. Responsibility for your actions. Looks like you can a) sell the bike, pay person off and get a bus pass or b) pass said responsibly on to your parents and have them pay.

Come on guys let's not harass him.
First off you should probably get a brake. That's what it's for...in case you need to stop suddenly. Second, even though the cause of hitting her car was because you yourself were trying to avoid other cars it's your "fault". She's not a bitch...she's probably some stressed out person who now has to fix her car and know that said adolescent does not have the money for it. Talk to your parents. Negotiate the cost and best bet is if you don't all ready have a job; get one.

They used to sell a lever and front brake for $25 but it is no longer on the site.
If $45 is still too pricey, take your brakeless death-mobile to the local co-op and see if they have any used parts for you.

before you give her any money, talk to her insurance company. what normally happens in a situation like this is her insurance will pay for it (if she has full coverage).
i could see that his may or may not have been your fault... i wasn't there. but even if it wasn't your fault, it definitely wasn't her fault. so in either case, you should help pay for it however you can--do some side jobs, ask your parents for money, etc.

truth right there. try to explain your situation to the driver you hit, and see if you guys can work something out. see if she has full coverage that way her insurance pays.
the car that cut you off may also be at fault, but nothing you can do about that.

her insurance will most likely have a $500 deductible...with having many experiences with minor hits like this....her car most likely is going to cost around $1000-$2000 to "fix"....if it is a nice car and a mechanic knows how to get his bucks, there will be some sort of broken sensor/wire that cost $500 and only avail from a dealer....so most likely you'll need to come up with $500 or somewhere close to that.

Here is what you should do:
Tell that lady whose car you dented that you're a minor. Say you're sorry then forget about it.
She's shit out of luck without a police report, as long as you don't get recorded admitting what you did (or god forbid write an apology letter, you dolt) then you're in the clear.
All this bullshit about giving this person money ... ignore it!

most of these people are telling you the right thing to do
doing the "right" thing and doing the smart thing completely different
the smart thing to do will be to ask her if her insurance will cover it.
do your parents know? if not, have them change your phone and tell them someone is harassing you.
does the lady have your address and real name? if so you are fucked.
she may be able to take you to court if she really wants to pursue making you responsible but i would try to get her to have her insurance cover it.
either way, when you get a car it's gonna get fucked up for suuuuure

You're not in a car, you were forced into hostile territory, you should've just boned out of a "scratch'n'dent" and made beeline for another congested side street.

Best thing to do now is push your status as a minor and keep quiet about it from now on.

"cut and run" is unfortunately more and more becoming "the american way" as in, do everything you can to avoid your debt to society. we see it in the court rooms ala dr. death Thompson himself to the very leadership of the United States skipping out on the ICC to just something as simple as being responsible for picking up your trash and so forth... it seems to erode more and more with every generation because who do we have to look up to? people like george bush....

Well, when it comes to a bicycle grazing a car, this would be the only time I suggest it.
I'm careful not to graze shit myself, but when you're by yourself in the streets, it's all on you when it comes to getting out of your own jam.
I say if it's a little snip of paint, who gives a shit.
If it's a nice-sized hole punched through the door and some broken glass, fess up to it.
Each level of damage requires a varying level of after-response.

or you can just man up to your mistakes no matter how big or small. Somebody's gonna have to pay for the damage... and in my opinion it should be the person responsible for the damage. Whether the damage is worth fixing or not is not
your call.

Well, the problem with taking any responsibility for anything nowadays is that most don't want to keep shit simple.
Instead of the old days where a handshake and an offer of payment or personal repair would be brought to the table, the other party would now like to get a lawyer and a bunch of other suits involved to try and squeeze whatever material value they can out of the matter.
If you want to keep the disagreement simple and between only those directly involved, then that's the way to go about settling it.
If you have to call out your lawyer and the rest of your goon-squad over a tiny ass chip of paint, then someone has some deep issues.

truth. and the brilliant part about taking responsibility for your actions particularly for the little things is that a lot of times people are reasonable enough or just too busy to bother and end up letting things go when you show some class and fess up. when people try to be sneaky and get away with something, the victim, upon discovery will go after the perp even more aggressively just on principle and make it a into a big deal... in the end fessing up is actually an easier way out and eventually you learn to be more responsible in the first place rather than having to fess up after the fact.

Bent you've been watching Fox news too much... they like to hype up the public on issues like tort reform and do so by highlighting the worst of the extreme cases that indeed do happen every so often (spilled coffee in the lap at McDonalds etc.) by doing this they seek to reduce the responsibility of corps who are caught causing harm to society in a very real way.
no lawyer in his right mind would EVER take a case of chipped paint pro bono and no car driver would hire a lawyer to seek damages of less than thousands especially if you fess up and offer to pay for the minor damage in the first place.

I just live by the "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy.
As in, if you're man enough to handle the potential ass-whooping by the party you inflicted grief upon, then do as I will.
If not, then this isn't your fight kid, find another way to face your demons.

Well, I guess you sort of figured out that I've never really used, or needed lawyers in my life then.
Not that I'm against them, I just like to keep myself out of situations that require them, or Heaven forbid, a courtroom.

So there was a news item about a woman in a car who cut off a motorcycle, watched as he crashed, stopped to check if her car had damage ( no, they didn't actually make contact). She left the scene, he later died of his injuries.
So...it could have been much worse.
Get a part time job and a brake. Sometimes life is unfair.

#1, Talk to your parents about how to handle this, if she wants she can go after them for the money, you are their responsiblity until your 18.

personally, I'm glad austinie is actually asking for advice... and trying to do the right thing (being responsible)...
if someone dented either my car or my bicycle, I'd like to know and have a chance to figure out who's responsible for paying for any damages...
having your stuff damaged by hit and run is not cool...
