Yeah, don't be scared of water like the car robots, as long as you keep your core warm, you're okay. Feet and hands are also important. Waterproof socks and gloves (eg Seal Skins) are $35 each at REI. A plastic poncho is a few bucks.
Riding in the rain is super fun. Expect car and bike braking distance to increase greatly, expect car drivers to act retarded, run more lights than ever, etc, and you'll be fine. I promise.

Some guy on LAFixed claimed, with an apparently straight face, that he didn't ride in the rain because he was afraid that his steel frame would rust.

Fun party rides are great fun in the rain. The last (and first) SMCM I went to got soaked and we had good fun on the ride, though it was rather short. I had a blast on the ride to and from the thing, too, where my feet were getting submerged while staying on the pedals it was so wet.
High speed training rides in the rain, on the other hand, are dangerous and not fun, in my opinion. I get too cold when I ride hard in the wet, my brakes don't work too well, and my brain doesn't react as fast. I'm also not as inclined to look over my shoulder as much. But none of that stuff matters on a party ride. Getting wet doesn't even suck so long as you are wearing synthetics. Don't put on a single layer of cotton and you won't even realize you are wet under your outer layer until you get inside.

We rode in the Santa Monica Critical Mass on January 4th in pouring rain. Didn't stop us.
Tomorrow we ride in the LACM, there will be no rain. Even if there is it will be nothing compared to what we encountered on Jan 4th.

While I still ride through it, a few of the components on my recumbent have suffered, no thanks to grit/water being splashed upon the frame.
That idler gear that sits in the middle completely detioriated in the middle of my commute a few nights ago.
Looks like fenders are in place for the near future, along with other, buffering capabilities.

For the FUTURE RIDE, if it is clear tonight, WE ARE ROLLING!!!!
To be sure, check this posting before coming down to the valley tonight, we will know for sure if it is going to be raining or if its clear.
Worst case, we can just postpone the Future ride till the last sat nite in Feb

Damn.
Well, we all better be certain before Shatter-day.
I've already got a schedule-workaround, and an HHR rental for that day.
The worst thing about though is, if y'all get rain, then we'll end up with snow and/or cold-wind up here.
bentstrider02.19.08 - 1:16 pm

The passion of the bike will be postponed due to rain. It's one thing to ride in the rain but with costumes and on PCH? Drivers on that road are reckless as it is and motorists in LA tend to have trouble coping with rain so we're going to postpone for a few weeks.
Undercover Bob02.20.08 - 2:27 pm

I drive and ride just fine through it.
Especially when driving the rig, I would be pushing full speed across snow in Idaho, while the atypical traveler would be putzing along at 20mph, afraid for their life.
It's all about maintaining momentum, and going easy on that brake.
