Thread Box:
BSNYC on Leto Vid
Thread started by md2 at 10.13.09 - 11:07 am

A reader has informed me that actor Jared Leto will be palpaging one in a short film for a song by his band, 30 Seconds to Mars:

Not only that, but he unleashed the awesome power of his fame to recruit Los Angeles's "Midnight Ridazz" for extra duty. Even though they are still smarting from the "The Midnight Ride" short film, many riders apparently showed up to appear in the film, which (according to the casting call) "will be celebrating the world of night rides, fixies, tall bikes, short bikes, weird bikes, costumes and most of all, the incredible community and unique individuals that make up this world. This short film is a lyrical journey from downtown to the Santa Monica Pier." (Which is just another way of saying, "We need a bunch of freaks.")

Clearly, Leto is learning an important lesson from the Flaming Lips, which is that if you need large groups of people to look foolish on camera for free, then the world of cycling is an inexhaustible resource.

I don't know....about four years ago on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills, Both Neiman Marcus and Barney's of New York had bicycle theme displays in their front Window display. The following spring/ summer Umberto in Beverly Hills had wicker bicycles displayed in their front windows. The previous summer the owner of Umberto was sporting a t-shirt with a bicycle on it that his wife bought him from a Melrose boutique for $112.

then I remember that store in New York that was vandalized because it had some track bikes in its front window display some years back.

I think and hope this is just a sign of bicycle becoming mainstream. Thank goodness for that. Like I said before, bicycle becoming mainstream is a dream of mine and applaud any efforts towards that and any accomplishment made in that direction.

Using bicycle in what is the popular culture of advertisement, (which is all around us and part of our mainstream culture - advertising that is) is just a sign of what is happening. People realizing the personnel and communal benefits to use the bicycle for transportation, exercise, and socialization.

Can I get a AMEN?

and besides, I don't think he was talking shit on Ridazz per se, I think he was just making a comment on cyclists in general...if you read the blog you can see he also points out the Flaming Lips video that used PDX cyclists....

which is that if you need large groups of people to look foolish on camera for free, then the world of cycling is an inexhaustible resource.

nowhere does he specifically say Ridazz are "suckazz" as user1 put it. He says all cyclists are suckazz and want to be on TV

Except England is really the reason that "rock" became popular...I mean America didn't have a decent good ol' ROCK band until Aerosmith, and Zeppelin PWNSxINFINITY Aerosmith, and rock is what brought about punk so I guess you could give England that...

but then Blues is really what started "rock" (which started "punk") and blues started down in ol Mississippi and spread up to Chicago...so if you're going to use the logic I used above, then America should get the credit for everything.

Oh but wait everyone in America, besides the native americans, is from England so shit...but then again the Blues started with the slaves who are from Africa...so maybe it should be africa that gets the credit? now I'm just babbling

Wiki pretty much has it right...........

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protopunk
Main article: Punk rock

The invention of the term "punk rock" is generally credited to critic Dave Marsh who used it in 1970 to describe the group Question Mark & the Mysterians, who scored a major hit with their song "96 Tears."[4] Over the next few years, the term was used occasionally to describe a number of American bands, mostly active in the mid-to-late '60s, playing music that today would be classified as garage rock: a ragged, highly energetic and often amateurish form of rock and roll.

In 1976 and '77, punk rock became a worldwide phenomenon, with centers of activity first in New York City, then London and the Los Angeles area; though pockets of similarly-minded musicians could be found worldwide.

In later years, historians and critics began exploring the roots of the early punk movement, and the term "proto punk" was coined to describe early, pre-punk influences.

nowhere does he specifically say Ridazz are "suckazz" as user1 put it. He says all cyclists are suckazz and want to be on TV

BSNYC is basically calling us suckazz and rightly so. He doesn't outright say we're suckazz, but you can read into it what you want. When he states,

Even though they are still smarting from the "The Midnight Ride" short film, many riders apparently showed up to appear in the film,

That saids to me we're suckazz, we didn't learn our lesson the first time.

When he saids....

Clearly, Leto is learning an important lesson from the Flaming Lips, which is that if you need large groups of people to look foolish on camera for free, then the world of cycling is an inexhaustible resource.

He's basically saying we're suckazz. You can read into it what you want, that's what I read into it.

Go and Wikipedia up The Stooges for us, and quote the section that has anything at all to do with New York.

I don't believe I was trying to say that the Stooges were from New York, only that they were around BEFORE Middle Class, in rebuttal to RBI's claim that MC was the 'first' punk band or whatever.

For the 1960s rock genre sometimes referred to as punk, see Garage rock.
