bike messenger posers
Thread started by 53x11 at 03.6.07 - 2:35 pm

Bunch of these posers popped up, all dressed up in some retro/2nd hand clothing from Bufalo Exchange next to pollys, riding fixed gear bikes with empty messenger bags... Where the hell they cme from?

They ride around with funny looks on their faces, pretending to be some kind of cult..

At what age does the term 'poser' become tired? Who really gives a shit what other people are doing with their lives. If they want to put on a mask, let em'.

Not like it really detracts from your own life, except for the fact that you sit around and think about 'how lame these posers are for having a certain bag.'

Just let em' be. Chances are they mean well and are just intrigued by the lifestyle. And for f's sake, at least they are ridin, right?

Do we really need to have this argument here again?
First off, messenger bags are not new things:
(from wikipedia)
This type of bag has been used in the transportation of mail and goods by numerous types of messengers, including Pony Express riders, postal workers, messengers on foot (especially in ancient times), and bicycle couriers.

In fact, some Royal Mail carriers in England currently use large messenger bags to deliver mail.

The design of the modern messenger bag traces its origin to the utility lineman's bag of the 1950s. It allowed lineman to carry necessary tools within easy reach while climbing utility poles. Later adapted by New York City bicycle messengers, each company would typically use a different color which also served to identify the messenger's company.

---Not new, not specific to bicycle messengers.
---Are well suited to cycling, which works well for those of us who need to get around on a bicycle while carrying things, like say, those of us who forgo the use of automobiles for transportation.
--can make carrying a shitload of stuff a hell of a lot more comfortable and less obstructive than a backpack
---allows access to the bag for things like locks etc when needed, easily
---some of us had these things before even knowing what a messenger was, never mind that they ha a certain style.
---it really doesn't even fucking matter, so quit dragging this topic up. we're not wannabee messengers, we just like to ride bikes.

Wow, this is something new. A messenger on the Midnight Ridazz forum. I remember in the early days, there was alot of messengers that would come on the rides. I had lots of friends who became messengers, and then, they never rode on any of the rides anymore. I never asked why, everybody has there own reasons for why they do and don't do things. But it has always been odd to me. It was like they where in this new group and they couldn't really communicate with me anymore. I remember alot of the messengers that I was at least cordial aquiantances with, they would say hi and exchange pleasantry. Now they same folks ignore me when they see me. On the train is another example, those same folks that I rode pretty steady with, I'll see on the train some times, and its like they have to talk to me, the weirdest thing about it is, there friends/people they ride with won't talk. When I see another person who rides, it just like automatic. I go and say whats up, talk about each other bikes, biking experiences and what not, we have a common ground, we both ride. I know if that person is a messanger, they won't talk to me. That real strange to me. I don't understand why, I get this feeling that these folks have a superiority complex.

I'll even go back four years ago, I went downtown looking for the Critical Mass ride, I see all the messengers (I didn't know they where messengers at the time) under that pass on Flower and Fourth. I go up to ask if they our waiting for the ride or if they know if it took off. These guy just start making fun of my bike. I offer to let them test it out, it's a folder. Wouldn't even take me up on it.

So to say my experiences with Messangers haven't been the most positive, isn't a unaccurate assement of my experiences. I got a lot more exampes, that our similar to the aboved stories.

53x11 How in the world could you tell where these people got there supposed used/2nd hand clothes from? You shop there? How do you know their bags where empty? What do you care what someone else is riding anyways, unless you got some interest in there bike. Most importantly why are you using this valuable space to post this? Did they do something to you, you didn't like the looks on their faces.

Welcome to the fourm. I see you are new. Don't be scared to put up on your profile who you are, most people who post on here let it be known, who they are. Check me out, I ain't got nothing to hide. If you see me on the streets you can even come up and talk to me.
That is, if your allowed.

The reason I responded to this is, that I don't understand this behavior. You want to elaberate on what this is about, what you posted. If you could also respond to what I said my experiences have been with messengers. If you think that being a messenger, makes you all that, come out and say, so. Back up your reason why. You opened this pandoras box, you can run from it, but the reality is, you can't hide from yourself and all those who see you.

blah! it's just another case of someone trying to justify their existence by putting down others. I remember those times, grade school I believe.

And why is the "bag" always brought up? I carry a bag when I ride, it's my purse. I've had this bag for only 7 years, it's held together with safety pins and cheap carabiners. It's not even a messenger bag, it's a book bag. It holds playa dust, my beer, my tools, and my work stuff. But then again, no one has ever mistaken me for messenger. probably because i don't ride a fixie and don't wear a stupid bicycle hat.

I use a thin, clear garbage bag to carry all of my stuff around. Because I am a firm believer in creating waste. So when teh bag rips and my stuff spills all over the street, I usually just leave all of it there. I would never invest in something silly like a messenger bag, that just makes too much sense. It's easier to carry stuff in your hands while you ride, and that's a fact.

I also love riding the sidewalks along side 5 year olds with training wheels. It's nice and safe there, and allows me to cruise along at a blazing 7mph.

One time I walked out of my house to water the flowers I keep in my garden and this guy who owns a floral shop up the street walked by and called me a poser, said I was a fake-ass wannabe florist. He even made fun of my watering can.

This thread was obviously started by a complete troll.

But wait! There's more!
I'm compelled. I can't help it.
Hey, Sexy, I'm a messenger. And the OP is a troll. He put up the same thread on some other forum. I think it's a waste of time.
And speaking personally, to your writing;
Maybe we're involved in our own bullshit, and have no interest in interacting with other people. Insular? Yes. Just because some of us do this messenger shit, doesn't necesarily mean we're interested in cycling culture. Some of us just like getting drunk and stupid, others just stay home and tend to themselves. Other folks like doing their own rides. Some of us did the Ridazz, but I think it just didn't seem that interesting anymore. If we don't do rides that much with MR, it's because there's too many instances of people crashing, and people acting irresponsibly. Why would we want to do that, when all we want is to ride by ourselves to some bar? I like doing the rides, myself, but sometimes, after riding all day, I just don't want to deal. Or maybe I got my own thing going. If some people are going to get all superior, well, that's them, but please don't box us all in one label. You got the stereotypical fixie drunk, the gangbanger type, regular people, and well, whatever.
I'm meandering, but there's all types out there. Some of us are into riding with people and having fun, others like to get uppity and whiny. There. I stop now. Brain hurt.

Of course I'll never meet every person out there. That includes every messenger in this city. What I wrote about is my experience and unfortunately for me (because I love interacting with people). If every cayanne pepper I ever ate burned my tounge, then thats how I think cayanne peppers tasted. There might be some cayanne peppers that don't burn my tounge, but that is something I never experienced. Just like messengers, all the same experience for me. I appreciate you responding me to my post, didn't mean to hurt that brain, but whatever painful that doesn't kills you will make you stronger (or whatever doesn't make you drunk will make smarter, you know what I'm getting at)

Your posting does kinda confirm my experience. Of course broad strokes miss alot of areas. I guess I'm just the sensative type who get insulted when somebody doesn't want to talk. I don't know what goes on in the day of a messenger, never done it, don't really
desire the experience. Never rode road a mile on their wheels, can't honestly judge it.

In reguards to that photo shoot. I've seen alot of messenger, that don't fit that sterotypical bill. I was out in front of the Mosky courthouse and saw some jacked up looking mountain bikes that messengers where using. i think they where messengers, judging by the package in the bags and the conversation they where having over their radio. Some of those bages where regular packbacks. Some of these guys looks as if they where in there 40's.

One more point. I watched chicken leather interview the guy who brings us the Bicycle Film Festival. He couldn't say enough about how messengers where the ones really making the bicycle culture come alive. Of course only he can speak for himself, but I don't see it. If somebody won't talk in friendly banter to passing stranger about there bike why would they want to be part of it.

My crew has all these experience of talking nice to people about bicycling, invited them out to the crash fest, and BOO-Yaa they there are. Time goes by, after only attending a few rides, next thing, they let yeah know they are riding to work.

Much respect Sleepy, thanks again, you earned a nap if you made it this far.

Damm it Sexy, I'm trying to get some rest in and you won't stop crying.
You might of put Sleepy to bed, but you woke me in up in the proccess, with all you whining.

"No messengers won't talk to me". "I like to talk to people and the messengers are too good for me". Maybe they are, maybe they look at you and know, you'll just start complain about something.

"My friends get people to ride, the messengers don't get anybody to ride and they get all the credit." wan wan wannnn! Why don't you just let people do there own thing, if they don't want to talk to you they probadly got a good reason. I don't even like talking to you and we are on a internet thread, somebody had to say something to shut you up. Sometimes when I'm crying about something my Daddy say to me, quit your crying or I'll give you something to cry about., where is your Daddy now? Is your life that perfect that you have all this time to worry about people who don't want to talk to you. Look at you, your a buttery panacake face, with blueberries for eyes. No wonder people ignore you, you most likely make them hungry.

"Respect"?, what the F@#*! If you had any respect for Sleepy, you would have listen to what he said, and maybe take it to heart, instead of trying to justifiy your last post. You obviously have no respect for this thread with your constant bitching.

Crybaby=Sexy
I don't know if that true, there is nothing sexy about your crying

If you don't want to get burned anymore, stop eating the Cayanne Peppers. What the hell does this mean "whatever painful that doesn't kills you will make you stronger (or whatever doesn't make you drunk will make smarter, you know what I'm getting at)" no I don't know what your getting at, maybe you can come to school with me for some writing classes. I started writing the word "writing" as "riding", must of been a telapathic freudian slip, you probadly need riding lesson also.

I'm going to try to go back to sleep now. Maybe you can take a nap to, I think you are wound up a little too tight! Good night Sexy. When you wake, don't run me over Friday night, and stop cutting everybody off. Stay off the bike lockers!
