46:16 is good for starters. then you should switch up to 48:17...

48/16 is good, but in reality it depends on the bike and components too. I have a 44/18 set up on an old steel schwinn that helps it a lot, but a 48/16 on a lighter peugeot that can handle the extra teeth

x/y means nothing. If you know the amount of inches you're running or want you can use different combination of gears to make it happen. For the terrain of the greater L.A. area I would suggest a 65 to 85 gear-inches. My commuting bike, which I also use for centuries (sometimes) has a 50/18, which is 73 inches. Conversely, my go-fast track bike is about 84 with a 48/15. I used to run 87 inches on my s/s, but it was too hard on my knees. The old-timers suggest that you learn to spin smoothly and quickly as possible with the smallest gear that gives you a reasonable top end.

seriously, if you want a fast ratio, you want your gear inches in the triple digits. just make sure you eat your leafy green vegetables if you want to keep your knees.
