I Used To Be FAT

Thread started by

i know there are alot of success stories with the ridazz slimming down and toning up due to living the MR life. (or just life with a bike in general)
(stilline, fuzzbeast, raquel, andrew, just to name a few)
we've been talking about starting this thread for a while now, and as i was going thru my old photos on my computer, i realized how much my figure has changed. my clothes are fitting better too.
i am still in my early stages of body transformation, but i dug up some photos from earlier this year, and compared it with a photo of me at crankmob...
post your pre-MR fat photos! (before and after if you got em'!)
reply
You didn't look bad before... theres no need to look slimming! I just think You looked good either way!

You're so right about the "doing it wrong," lol. I am drinking AND eating AND sleeping more now that I ride. The combination is just cancelling out the good/bad effects. It's an equilibrium. I'd hoped to shed a few pounds, but at least I can eat & drink guilt free now. : )

I've gained 15 pounds the last 3 months.
I know I suck. It's because I "work" from home in front of a computer 16hrs a day, never go out except on social rides and then any calories I might burn I replenish with beer. I need a personal trainer!
How did you do it Candy Cane?

Congrats Candy Cane and ijunes!!
Man... I hate seeing a thread like this cause I'd like to share my story. Maybe in 6 months I can post up my success story.
One question... I like beer. For next couple months, I'm gonna watch the calorie intake for the whole week so I can consume beer on the rides. Or sticking to hard liquor a little better? Either way... I am motivated by this thread!! This thread is being bookmarked.!!

Candy Cane's before photo just looks like it could have been one of those unflattering photos... you know... like the ones i pass all of my photos off as. There's been some toning since then fo sho. My before and after diptych would probably look about the same.

well even though MR has taken away alot of extra baggage around my midsection and thighs and replaced it with muscle tone, it has also given me the gift of a budding rose, called alchoholism.
BUT ive been on antibiotics for an infection (also compliments of MR) and drinking was a strict no-no, and i have to say, i think ive had moar fun on the rides then ever before. I mean, when i first met you guys, i was really shy, and drinking a flask of tequila really helped me come out of my shell, and get over the intimidation of joining a pack full of completel strangers with seemingly one common thread: riding a bicycle. but now that i know enough people that i can honestly call my friends, i dont think ill be drinking as often, or as much, simply becuase i really wole-heartedly L.O.V.E. the rides + ridazz that i find i can really savor the moments when im seeing clearly. i mean, going over the bridge into downtown in a sea of blinkies and howling bikes, the buzz of freewheels like giant cicadas, is SO surreal, and when im wasted, im trying to concentrate on the asphalt not tossing my off my bike to look up, and realize how gorgeous my life is.
.end moment.
.wipe tear.

awh, i wish i had an epic tale of adventure and triumph where the pencil belt slays the villain
and gets the girl, but alas, it is a simple story with humble endings.
i made the pencil belt becuase it was my version of the 'bullet belt', a weak attempt at commentary. (you can do greater things with a pencil, than with a bullet, is what i was going for) Most of the symbolism was overpowered with the fact i was wearing an obscene amount of pencils, sharp pencils, which would poke me the jelly roll every time i would bend over. but thanks to MR, my spare tire is more like a 'cunt gut' now, so i can re-introduce the pencil belt to regular rotation on my accessory circuit.
omg. i need to get out of the house/.

i can side with you CC on the drinking thing...when i went to my first crank mob I was drunk...but i never fell off of my bike or ran into anything.... but every ride i drink less...and to be honest im getting faster and faster(i dunno if this is a problem) also being able to fix a bike with my two hands and some tools has given me the inspiration to do household repairs i was too lazy to do.
Another month or so and i wont need a beer to lighten my ass up...

I love to eat too.
I think the trick is not to eat less, but eat CLEANER.
i.e. In your general day to day eating patterns, try to avoid stuff that has a buncha crap in it. You already know what that means.
MOAR FRESHER froots and veg. 'specially cruciferous veges like brocolli which is just insanely nutritious. Eat lots of colorful things that growed on plantzors.
Lean protein sources. Vegans, adapt as required.
Olive oil is probably the best source of lipids out there. I'm not saying drink cupfuls of the stuff, but it makes your veges taste amazing and keeps your coat shiny.
Bonus tip: if it's got corn syrup in it, it's probably crap, so avoid it like the plague.
Let's face it, we're cyclists, we NEED to eat. Sure, the odd carnitas burrito isn't going to kill you if you're riding. It's your general day to day eating and exercise patterns that will determine if you're burning fat or not.

"
Lean protein sources. Vegans, adapt as required. "
pretty much all vegetable proteins are lean, aka low in fat. vey few vegetables have a lot of fats, nuts have some, but tend to be good fats.
also, one of the biggest things to seriously reduce or cut out completely if you wanna lose weight is CHEESE. Cheese is congealed fat, that and some flavoring agents, not exactly something you want if you're trying to lose fat.
I know, I know, it's tasty... but think about it, is it worth it?
The biggest thing overall is simple math. Burn more than you put in, you WILL burn fat.

Salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Coffee. Bananas. Apples. Grapes almonds. Rice milk.
No soda or sweet drinks.
I Try to avoid corn syrup
I try to avoid soybean oil and bottled salad dressing.
I fuck up sometimes and eat ice cream or donuts. And beer. I also eat out at all these silverlake vegan spots and of course pure uck

I got up to 185 lbs about a year ago, the biggest I'd ever been. I started eating less (not less crap, per se, just crap in smaller portions) and walking a mile or two in the mornings. Dropped about 30 lbs that way... and then I rediscovered MY BICYCLE!! HOLY SHIT! I didn't drop much more weight after I started rollin' with the Ridazz, and leaving my car at home as much as possible, probably only another 5-10 lbs, but it sure as shit redistributed the weight like WHOA! I've been out of commission with a concussion followed by a nasty, nasty cold, and have noticed some of it coming back on. Funny, the fat never bothered me when I had it before, but lookin' down now I'm keen to get well again and get back on mah bike! LOOOOOVE IT!

Riding definitely helped me stop smoking...but not just riding...ROOT RUN. I got so winded the first time I tried ROOTing that I thought my lungs were going to turn inside out. and we only went about 10 miles (out of a planned 60.)
so, one day, I just quit. but unlike any of those other times i quit, I had a reason. i wasnt going to be the fast cyclist that i wanted to be without quitting. and whenever i got a craving, i just told myself, "nope, i quit." and whenever i had a bad craving, i'd go ride my bike a few miles.
until you're ready you're not going to quit. when you do, there's one key to everyone's quitting strategy: you need a reason to quit for yourself.

Someone up there asked about keeping their upper body strong while riding a bike.
Teh solution I has it:
SCHWINN RACER HANDLEBARS.
When you ride uphill, use the bars for leverage - your arms will get big and so will your pectoral muscles, shoulders, forearms, hands, etc.. I rocked a Schwinn Racer single speed for two months and I got muscle man shoulders and stuff. I switched to my road bike and started being a mushy armed bitch (until I got a bakfiets).
Doughy middle is prevented by riding like a crazy mofo every time you are on a bike and by starving yourself. Really, ride super hard whenever you can.
ubrayj0212.23.08 - 2:15 am

woah.. you guise are seriously giving me major inspiration.
I have never been skinny in my life, but I was definitely smaller the years I was riding and working on my bike in NY. and I still lose a lot of weight when I go back there for a minute bc I tend to ride more there.. living in LA is weird on that tip - I work a lot from home, so I don't have a built in commute and I'm not biking around delivering food and packages to people for money, so I don't have biking built into my daily life that way either. most working days I don't even leave the house except to get coffee, and since all the riding I do now is pretty much pleasure riding, it's been way way way way way way way harder for me to work that in then when I'm simply riding FOR work, or to get to work/school...
as a result, my clothes are tighter, I feel way less strong than I have in years, my back hurts more, and my body is not happy - which in turn makes me want to stay home even more. It got way worse after I came back from NY in Sep.. dunno why.. maybe I've been working from home even more than before.. I'm totally embarrassed about my current physical state, even though I'm really happy about other things I've been working on in my life (is it always that when you work on one part, another part stagnates??)
BUT
But - the upside is this:
I know how I was feeling (and looking) when I first got back on a bike as an adult 10 years ago. It had been years since I had done any regular excercise besides climbing subway stairs. And I know truely that if I could do it then, I can most certainly as sure as heck do it now.
I am forever grateful to the bicycle and the amazing and inspiring people that I've come to know through the bicycle.
Ashira just needs to ride more.

I think after my trucking accident, the only one true thing that kept my weight down was my five-day work schedule.
Go to work @ 1500, Get off work @ 2300, then head to the gym by 2330.
This kept me healthy until I switched to that job down in Montebello in Jun '08.
After I lost that job in January of this year, that's what triggered the blow, along with some deep depression issues in regards to the other trucking job I lost.
Apparently, OTR-cross country trucking and full work-weeks at the retirement village gate were part of the ongoing plan to keep me down at 170.
Unfortunately, with slightly fewer, off-kilter hours to work with, I've sort of jumped back a little over 200.
I'm steadily rebuilding broken up workout routines and still ride my bike anywhere I have to go.
But the truth is, I probably won't getting back to my slimmed self until my employment situation changes back to the one mentioned above.
Don't worry, I haven't gotten slow or anything though.
