Vandalism! LA River bike path

I was on a ride last night with my buddies and when we hit the LA river bike path from Burbank it was so sad to see almost all of the Lights which are rarely turned on have been broken which means glass all over the place! Why would people do this? It’s our own Tax money that goes into fixing these kinds of cool places! Dam Vandals! I’m making a report to the Cops this is just unacceptable behavior!

How many lights were broken? That takes a lot of effort to do. Strange...

Those lights have actually been dark for ages because the wire has been repeatedly stolen. That anybody should decide to break the glass is just more distressing.

What happened is the copper cable powering the lights,
was ripped off. Recycled

I’ve seen them on once in a great while. A lot where broken! Starting from just after riverside to in-between los Feliz! I just got off the phone with the police Dept and they said they will start an investigation and clean and repair within 2 weeks! Why don’t we have cameras monitoring the path? Stealing the copper for recycling now that crazy!

Lights are easy target practice for teenagers with bb guns.

I don't know what these lights look like exactly. I know it is next to impossible to break them with b-b guns. I only knew of one person who actually broke one of the city's street lights. I know of many and watch as many attempted to break them (FAIL all times). I forgot how he did it, I do remember him saying he had to get right underneath it . Amazingly he became one of the three firearm instructors for the LAPD.

maybe it was a real gun. they used to shoot out the lights in lincoln heights, so they put in bulletproof glass.

sounds like bullet proof glass would be the way to go!

Wasting bullets on useful, lighting fixtures ought to be a crime.
I'd save those rounds for some prime meat from the forest.
Venison sounds delish right about now.

I thought the reason there were no lights out ther is becuase the homeless go and take the wireing out....you can get a lot of $$ for copper wire at a recycling place

Fuck cameras. Aren't there enough of those things already? The agency in charge of the bike path should be (and I was under the impression that they were) working on a way to make the copper wire unstealable. Making the lights a little more robust probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.

that's that starving do nothing government that we all share.... a government that is so fucking WEAK SAUCE that we have to rely on volunteers to give their time to help make things right....
I bet this goes 6 months before anything gets repaired if at all.

Yeah me and you shouldn't have a problem with the darkness, one if you have a decent headlight, the real problem is what can pop out at you at some of the real skethcy parts....exp.mountain lion,snake,possum,ect...

The only thing a camera on the path would do is film the orgies the bums have on it..

This wire theft thing has been going on for at least two years - it's been about that long since I can remember all the lights on the path working correctly. The price of copper skyrocketed and it became worth the trouble to steal wire. About the only ones that work now are the lights on the freeway that happen to cast light on the bike path.

Crux of the problem is copper price is too high. I'm writing my congressman and representative tonight to see what they can do about it.

dude... those lights have been off for quite some time. It's the main reason why I've stopped taking the LA river bike path back home after the LA rides.
nothing new... nothing mysterious or controversial.
If you don't have a good strong front light do not, I reiterate, DO NOT, take the LA river bike path. Almost ran over a bun sleeping on the path and I can only imagine the world of pain I would have been in as well.

I heard a rumor from a co worker that they want to make the LA river nicer so that there can be Fishing areas and boating areas and alot more plants all along the river! Any one else hear about this?
pporras03.10.09 - 4:58 pm
reply
Nope, but I feel alot safer and better taking the surface streets rather than the LA river trail at night.

We ride to Mom Ridazz bridge all the time in a small group and no one ever fucks with us. We usually just see a few random bikers, not too may peds cause its really not that close to the neighborhood, so not so good for walking.

In a group it's ok if you're talking about any problems with anyone you encounter. The problem at night, and sometimes in the day time, is that it's easy to get crossed up on a "Y" section of the trail. Also there's no guardrail, so you go off the trial and towards the water, you'll go in if there's water at the bottom of the sloop.
Here's a pic of part of the trail with fencing. There's alot of it that has nothing. Again, OK in the day time, kinda dodgy at night.

THAT"S where all that damn glass came from.! I've been wondering about that the last couple days. That's my commute. I don't take it at night unless you count 5:30 am as night. Luckily they do bring the street sweeper down there once a week or so. I know this because they do it at about 5:30 am. Hopefully that guy will sweep it up soon!
I didn't know about the copper theft. I thought it was usual L.A. protocol to have a non functioning streetlight every 16 feet on a heavily traveled pathway.

I'm sorry, but LA River=Glorified, Drainage Canal.
Although it does become badass when it floods past the watermarks and Swift water-rescue is called.
