Mook, do you mean to ask if this ride will be the same pace as the last one?
I would like to know that.. I may come out but this time probably haul less shit with me and maybe ride free-wheel vs fixed.

We're not trying to set any world records but we're not pitching tents overnight either. With that said, the pace is around 14mph to 19mph and depending on the roads and traffic conditions, etc.. can be a bit faster or slower at times.

I highly recommend freewheel over fixed

I'm sure it won't involve going back 24miles to get spokecards @ the Ralphs.

In either case, Creative Thing is fucking awesome!

Well, thanks, Al.
I'd like to clearify that Ridetime is my partner in crime, and he really has been the driver of the past few D.C. rides. He's created the route, called the ride and led us.
I make the spoke cards and help herd the ride, making sure we don't drop anyone without knowing it.
I forgot my pack with spoke cards in it at a stop last time, and had to cycle back 5 or 6 miles to retrieve them.
Won't happen again!

Warning, Warning!!! The mapmyride route that is circulating about will have a few changes. The final route will be posted on Monday January 17th.

The food stop has been finalized and it will be "The Pantry" 24 hours and yummy breakfast food. Still trying to figure out where we will put our bikes but we'll work it out.

Training ride #3 will be this Saturday night, meeting at union station and leaving at 6:30p.m.

If you can't finish training ride #3, there's a good chance you won't finish the Dark Century. Come out and test yourself.

Hmmmmm!!! Me personally, I wouldn't do it fixed. The hardest part of this ride will be between Redondo beach and San pedro a 12 mile stretch where we encounter uphills and downhills with the highest climb being 464 feet. If you're fixed, you won't get to enjoy all the downhills that this ride will grace us with. Trust me, there will be more downhills on this ride than a Rollercoaster. Hint: There's a 6 mile portion of the Dark Century that is all Downhill. Hope that helps.

I don't personally see why not, but The Pantry has security and I can only guess as to how they may react to 60 bikes leaning up against there property on the sidewalk. I'm not really worried about it. But to be safe, bring a light lock.

I've had good luck parking at the Dennys behind Union Station. They have a huge lot. It is posted that non-customers will be towed, but I have not had any problems in the 6 or 8 times I have parked there all night. Sometimes, I tell the manager I am leaving my car and will bring 20 riders in for breakfast and they are good with that. Since breakfast this time will be elsewhere, I don't know. Takes your chances.
Also, there is a side street directly across the street from the Dennys lot which has no parking restrictions. There is also a city building there with a 24 hour guard shack. The street is well lit too. I park there sometimes, and not had any problem at all.

Here are the pictures from my camera. Turns out many were blurry and no pics after mile 70 since moisture got into the lens.

For the next one, how about, in conjunction with the route slip, a quik overview on the "do's" and "don'ts" when in a paceline. A little bit of road etiquette never hurt nobody.

hey danya, not sure we met, and i appreciate your concern, it comes from a caring place. but, i would really hate to also have to consider slowing down rides to the cons list. i dont consider lagging behind as being dropped, im pretty happy about the ride, i appreciate the privilege of lagging without a fuss. i hope you reconsider your position on this, its just not worth being pissed for this reason. really, downey aint so bad :)

Sarah, in a perfect world, the entire group would have stayed together from start to finish. There we close to 70 riders, very unexpected. Everything is trial an error when we have large group rides. I learned from this experience and plan to correct it for DCX.

Some of the fixing will come from your words at the 7eleven. No route slips. Other fixes will come in the way of rules and etiquette. Now on the flip side of that, there has to be some internal respect on your part when riding in a big group. If you're not keeping up, you can't expect that group to wait 30 minutes for you. On DC8 we waited 45 minutes for you and another group to roll up because you made a wrong turn and you had a route slip. So you can't come on here and curse people out, even the people you think are friends. People are trying to have a good time and I'll say it every time we do this ride.

We had 2 bailout points. I asked you twice if you were okay to go, you said don't worry, you're okay. You passed on the bail out points knowing that you might be out there by yourself. I will be making some changes on DCX but in the future, I hope that everyone understands that it's 100 miles. If you're no prepared to do 100 miles in a timely manner, start training now.

You have until July 16, 2011 to get ready for the next one. I expect to see you because I know you're a strong rider. I promise all things will be fixed on DCX.

Wayne, you know I loved the route, but on longer rides, fewer turns would be advantageous. A route slip doesn't have to be 4 pages long.

Sorry bro, but my concern is the person who doesn't know Long beach, who doesn't know many of the L.A. roads. who doesn't know all the nuances of entering and exiting the San Gabriel River bike path and then re-entering the Rio Hondo bike path.

The route slip is there for guidance. There's no right or wrong formula and whether 1 page or 4 Enjoy yourself, it's just a bike ride.

for the record, The Dark Century was never meant to be a stage at the Tour De France where roadies come out and finish the 100 in 3 hours. DC is not that kind of ride. If anyone is frustrated because it took to long, or there were too many turns or the route slip had too many pages, I understand but if you read the post, it clearly states that this an Urban adventure not a sprint stage of the Tour De France.

Dark Century X will be an Urban Adventure. <<<<<<---- Urban Adventure!!!!!

the route was really nice... the bike paths were really cool and I can't wait to take my family and friends.... but if I would not have kept up with the front group (i was the last one there) I prob would have gotten lost.... perhaps having two group leaders.... i heard and see people calling group A... maybe have a fast pace group and a medium pace group... group B....

but i had fun in the cold and long route....

Well, I got dropped at the Pantry, and it took me until Redondo Beach Pier to catch up.

@PC, There will always be a Route slip on the Dark Century. I probably spoke out of frustration that maybe I wouldn't do it, but I'm not a politician and don't have to appease the masses. Route slips for everyone, I may even make the next one 6 pages long. So there.

I have some vinegar and spit. So, I want to ride on a ride like this one. My wife wants to come with me. Can you suggest hotels? Where is the best place to stay in LA on a small vacation budget? I know the prices of hotels seem to change throughout the year...I just don't want to get there when all of the movie awards shows are on, I guess. Can you meet me at my hotel, Reverend Dad, when I go to LA? I think I would like to go there in May. I will try to go on a ride that is long and fun, when I am there. Because, well, I want to challenge myself. But also, I would like to experience some fun rides that are 'just for the people,' becuase--everyone knows that having fun on a trip is fun.

Most of the rides in LA are spandex(tm) rides, they meet at Starbuck (tm) Coffee and start at 6(am) in the morning.

Thanks for the tips, Reverend Dak. My wife told me that we should get some cycling clothes for the trip. I already have some padded spandex shorts and a spandex shirt, but since we will be there for more than a day, (and since my wife doesn't have any cycling clothes) we are going shopping. I'm also interested in finding out what best bike to ride on the trip. My wife has a Polaris IQ Women's Cruiser Bike. It rides pretty smoothly, and I think it is a good value at around $130 dollars. Since I like cycling so much, I spent somewhat more on my bike. I ride a road bike. It's made by the Forge bicycle company. It is a CTS 1000 Road Racing Bike. And, like I said, it cost a whole bunch more than my wife's bike, (at around $380 dollars) but the price is worth the quality build and racing concept. So, we are in the planning stage. We wake early, so there is no problem with the fact that most rides in LA start at around six in the morning. I'm feeling pretty good. I think that I will be able to keep up with the best of them. Hey, could I speak with you through email, Reverend Dak? You've given me a bunch of good advice already. I'd like to get to know you. And, I have many more questions. So, from my wife and I: "Los Angeles cycling trip, or bust." We are ready and willing for a great springtime trip.

Hi reverend dak,

My name is Ridetime. I like bikes with 2 wheels and 2 pedals that make my feet go round and round. I especially like the aforementioned because it's super fun and put's me in touch with the wind. I've had so much fun on my 2 wheel, pedal powered people mover that I often forget i'm riding with spandex wearing, starbucks coffee drinking, 6a.m. pedal pushers. My girlfriend is always asking me, "where do you guys go"? and I tell her, We just ride around and enjoy ourselves. Hey reverend dak, maybe you can give me a tip on how I can further enjoy my bike riding in los angeles. I know this group, they're called the L.A. County Bicycle coalition, what a great group of people. I especially love the fact they welcome all types of cyclists'. So exciting! Well reverend dak, thanks for listening.
