"CHP investigators say there's a growing trend of people riding bicycles at night while drunk."
Because people think it's fine to drink and bike cause they only hurt themselves instead of drinking and driving which can kill someone else. It's a physiological safety net on moral people give themselves. So in my opinion if they don't even care about themselves obviously why would they even care about others? It's still stupid to drink and ride cause you still have a chance of making some car dodge trying not to kill you and end up smashing into someone else... Still causes accidents and obviously people do stupid things when drunk.
Also in this report I feel no pity on these cyclists for their stupidity...

I just saw this on klta news.. the only reason they got busted was because the Bike riders were riding on the wrong side of sepulveda blvd... the moral of this story, if your drunk riding, remember to ride on the right side of the road. Dumb ass

It's about time. I don't know why people take riding drunk so lightly. I enjoy the freedom bicycling gives you from many laws, but if you can't hold your liquor (or other substances) and are riding like an idiot and crashing you deserve what you get, just like if you're driving. I've seen too many people get hurt really bad on rides because they were too drunk or stoned.

Also, they were apparently at La Cinega and Stocker, top of monster hill, on one of the busiest streets in that area. ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE STREET.
I wouldn't even ride on those streets sober, Anything that goes over that hill (La Cienega, Stocker, or La Brea) is like a 50 mph 8 lane divided freeway.

They were stopped for being in a pack and riding on the wrong side of the street.
They got taken in for being wasted.
How many times do I have to say it?
BE MORE NINJA!
The danger of drinking and riding is primarily due to the propensity of people to do stupid shit while drunk, rather than the actual impairment of motor skills and balance.

I was thinking when I made my first post about this, that it was possible they were not on the wrong side of the road.
Too often the circumstances get exagrated in reports about such incidents.
So, don't over indulge and stay ninja amap to avoid what happened to our brother (and sister?) riders last night.

if we don't want drivers to drink and drive around us, then why would you do the same damn thing? riders that drink and ride are hipster freaks that need to learn the fundamentals over again. they make riding a bike into some lame-ass art expression when it isn't. it's riding a fuckin' bike.
grow up, ride and have fun and don't kill anyone. i'm not one to support the cops, but they did their job.

Is it true the bikes were confiscated (not just impounded)? Obviously when one is arrested for drunk biking or drunk driving, your vehicle is going to be impounded, but usually your vehicle is returned to you after paying impound fees, etc.
Anybody know the real story?

My guess is the guys were riding bikes that cost less than $200 and Impounding costs depending on how many days it's impounded it can cost more than 100$ a day.
You figure out the rest... If you can't. Go figure...

All possible - but my question was concerned with whether "due process" was done here. If the article could have said (for example), "the bikes, which were proven to be stolen, were confiscated".
I'm not necessarily defending the actions of these guys, but under our legal system people accused of crimes still have rights.

the story was scewed 100% - the cops were looking to make arrests NO MATTER WHAT...

There is a pretty good chance that the reporter who wrote the story may have jumbled some of the terminology and we may never know whether the bikes were impounded, forfeited, seized as evidence etc. While there are often legal issues at play, journalists frequently mix up precise terms.

as much as i don't believe 99% of the thing police officers say, i don't know, man...
sure, the reporting may have been spiced up and the cops may have stretched the details, but that doesn't excuse getting pulled over and breathalyzed for a group ride of 15 people! what the fuck. i've been on so many rides and even if the police have harassed us, they have never breathalyzed someone and arrested them for BUI. people need to learn to ride under the radar and handle their liquor if they're gonna drink.

I've seen so many drunk riders on rides and 90% of the time, they're swerving or off balance and not wearing a helmet.
Saw one kid hit a pot hole so hard he looked like he was shot out of a cannon and when he hit the ground I thought he was dead. In the end I say.
Saw another drunk kid who had to think he was a superhero bombing down Sunset in echo park who didn't even attempt to stop at red light. He was going west but after he got hit he was on the east side of the street dying. Still don't know if that kid survived that accident. Craziness man.

Rules of the fucking road, it's what it really comes down to.
You can't get pulled over without probable cause.
You don't need a driver's license to ride a bike.
You're not subject to sobriety test unless you're suspected of drinking and DRIVING, because it's one of the stipulations of HAVING a driver's licence.
Riding on the wrong side of the street is against the law, drunk or not. You will get pulled over.
Visibly breaking the law will get your caught.
Crashing into a center divider will draw attention to yourself.
The moral of this story is:
DON'T DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF IF YOU ARE DRUNK.

Drinking is fine. Get as fucked up as your liver can handle. Just stay home and drink or take the MTA or a cab. Don't get on the roads when you are drunk. It doesn't matter whether you are operating a car or a semi-truck. The principle is the same.
Once you start drinking, the first thing that becomes impaired is your mental abilities and your judgment. That's why drunk people always think they are okay to drive/ride.
