Bikes are sort of all done.
My kid goes to a school with about 400 kids. She and maybe two other kids at that school know how to ride a bike reasonably well. It is like that at every school I am familiar with, and with kids I meet in middle school and even high school.
What these little prisoners report is that riding a scooter is about all they can manage, and many 10 year old and older kids I know can barely manage that.
The good news is that a couple of afternoons tooling around the neighborhood is usually enough to get a kid mobile and relatively safe on a scooter - so there is hope. But bikes?
Just the culture of "parenting" alone is a HUGE barrier to entry for kids. So yeah, in a sense bikes are "done" - but no more "done" than they have been a few other times in U.S. history. The device is still a marvel and so long as the idea and skills to manufacture them is not lost, there will always be people using them.
I think the current crop of late-30's and up riders will be keeping the flame alive for the current elementary school aged kids children to get a heaping helping of bicycling. so, let's all meet up in 2040 and trade notes on what is working, to sell shares in our bike enterprises, and light cigars with car dealer brochures from bankrupt manufacturers.

Some of us will hold our torch aloft..still...
