Bicyclist Dies in Late Friday Crash in ELB

June 26, 2010)--A 58-year-old La Palma man is dead, struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle late Friday (June 25) in ELB.
The LBPD says a 70-year-old LB man was driving the 2010 Ford F-150 pickup truck westbound on Carson Street east of Woodruff Avenue at about 11:50 p.m. when it collided with the bicyclist, also moving westbound.
Police say LB Fire paramedics transported the bicyclist to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. They say the truck's driver was interviewed at the scene and released pending further investigation.
Investigators ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Detective Sirilo Garcia at (562) 570-7355.

Not necessarily a bad thing to post this type of news more than once. It is a reminder that we all need to work towards safer streets, stiffer laws and better enforcement to protect vulnerable cyclists.

dang that's like 2 miles from my place. carson is probably one of the worst east/west streets for bicycling.

I rode past the accident site yesterday. There's no intersection, so I guess the truck was going straight ahead when he hit the cyclist.
The street is maxed out there, with a third traffic lane going all the way to the curb. No shoulder at all. On the very few occasions when I ride Carson, I have to take the lane.
Its just not a good street to cycle on, anytime of the day.
Larry Mahorney, the man who was struck and killed, was well known and well liked in the area. A memorial of some sort is being planned, and a Ghost Bike will be installed in a day or two.

That's a lovely gesture, I hope they welded the tires, handlebars and seat/seat-post to the frame so the bike may stay there permanently. (The city only removes them when some or all of those items are removed by vandals.)

if cyclists are meant to be treated like cars then the driver should automatically be considered at fault just like rear ending a car right? murder of worst than first degree? nahhh

i cant hate bad drivers...because i know they exist and i take the risk every day on the streets knowing they're out there...and i still i ride as fast and unsafe as my legs let me... i preach safe riding..but when i get out there my ego shuts my mind and i just wanna ride my ass off cuz my ego says you are better than other riders...you dont slip you wont get hit.... and then i have the parent part of my brain that says " you know hes lying and that your an idiot".. and then i say "i know"...and then i ride faster.... i hope there aren't too many others like me...then im fucked
