Choppercabras 8th Annual Spring Thing!!
Where: Atomic Cycles 17322 Saticoy st. Van Nuys, CA 91406 (818) 609-0113
When: Sunday, May 31st, Noon Sharp!
Choppercabras 8th annual Spring Thing ride is a bicycle event unparalleled in all of Los Angeles, perhaps all the globe! Bicycles bashed, blood spilled, hot dogs eaten, 2 wheeled mayhem unlike anything you’ve ever seen! (unless you’ve been to one of these before.) And it’s all free! Did I mention hot dogs?
What you will need:
You ready to have fun
A bicycle in good working order
A silly hat. Dress up, it’s more fun.
A note on the time. Do your best to arrive on time or you’ll miss out on all the fun, we don’t wait for you, as there will be hundreds of people there on time ready to ride. We start at Noon, not hipster time, but real time.
How to get here:
By Car:
101 Exit Balboa, head North until you hit Saticoy, make a left go till you see Louise, park. The event location is ½ block west of Louise in the south side of Saticoy. Parking in the back will be taken up by event stuff, best to park on the street.
From 118 as above but south on Balboa, make a right on Saticoy.
From 405 exit Sherman Way go West until you hit Louise, North on Louise as above.
By Bike:
Take Orange line to Louise, North on Louise until you are at Saticoy, go west on Saticoy, follow the noise and smells, you’re there!
By Plane:
Look for mess of bikes, parachute into Ralph’s parking lot, and watch out for Coldstone patrons, they may eat you.
Events:
Super big figure 8 race:
Way too many 16”, 20”, and 26” tall bikes all trying to do 15 laps on the figure 8 circuit at once. Should be a total mess.
Pedal n’ Puke race:
Done on the 16” tall bikes. Groups of three have to race to one end of the ring, get off the bike do five revolutions with their head on a pole and then go back. The first one to complete 3 laps moves up to the final bracket. The best three will compete for the victory.
The Big, Bigger, Biggest Battle Royale:
Over 20 tall bikes will square off in the ring of death as they battle fore supremacy. Riders will be wielding foam weapons that hurt but don’t generally break bones. 20 on 20 free-for-all battle royale. The action will be quick and dirty, the riders are eliminated when they fall off their bike, the last rider still riding is the victor. Winner gets a trophy.
The Demolition Derby:
We save the best for last, the mainstay of all Choppercabras events, the bicycle Demolition Derby! Twelve bikes with metal rams welded to the front of them, pit the participants resolve and pain thresholds at this last man standing event has no rules. The goal is to destroy the other rider’s bikes, their endurance, their ability to walk, their souls, to win; you must break them (insert phony Russian accent here). Ram, kick, and thrash your way to victory. The winner gets a trophy, perhaps some impressive scars. This event is violent in the extreme, you will get hurt, watch from a safe distance.
*Special bikes will be provided for all the events. You still need a bicycle for the ride on the ride.
The Ride:
We will do a few miles at a leisurely pace through the mean streets of the San Fernando Valley. We ride a few miles, we go slowly, and we try and keep the ride together. We like to see all riders occupy the right lane only of the street so we can co-exist with traffic and maximize our fun. The cause if fun, pick fights with people in cars on your ride, not ours. This is a cruise, a put, a crawl, not a race just so you know. When we get done we will be back at Atomic Cycles for the bb-q. Did I mention free hot dogs?
The BB-Q:
Back to base for some dogs and conversation, now time to relax. Dogs are free until they run out. There is a bar in the same parking lot, a liquor store and grocery across the street just so you know.
The End:
Hang out as much as you like, but the show is over folks! Help cleaning up is always appreciated.
Notes/FYI/etc.
Show up with a bike ready to ride, any kind of bike is welcome. Do not show up with a basket case or a bike that needs major repairs, you may not get them.
I do not loan bicycles for the ride. Bring a bike that is rideable to the ride, save yourself the embarrassment and be ready.
Dress up in costume. It’s ok; you’ll still be “cool” if you dress up.
Show up on time. Noon. I recommend not partying until 5 am the night before if you want to make it on time. I’ve heard all the excuses and I don’t care because it is you who will miss out.
Filmers: I’ve had a lot of problems with “camera entitlement”. You’ll need to get permission from me in advance if you have a photo or film project and want to document the event. Also, I’ll want copies of whatever you film/photograph. YOU MUST BE THERE EARLY! If you show up late or rub me the wrong way I’ll rip your camera out of your hands and smash it right in front of you. Don’t fuck with me on this one, you’ve been warned. I don’t need you.
The Ring of Death.
The Ring of Death or “ROD” is the ring of car tires that the events take place in. Entering the ring of death means you are accepting that you may get hurt, will most likely get hurt, and are not going to cry to me later about your injuries. If you jump in the ring to take a picture, you may get hurt, you may damage your gear. If you find this too dangerous, then by all means: STAY ON THE SAFE SIDE OF THE ROD! You have been duly warned.
Audience Participation of aforementioned events.
If you want to participate in an event you may understand that you may (well, for sure) come under some form of bodily harm. There have never been more serious injures than some cuts and bruises but just so you know, these events are a bit rough. No kids may do an event but the ride. Sorry.
If you are a spectator and interfere with any of the events, you are accepting the fact that the event participants can and may hurt you. In other words: if you want to join in, then do so. If not, watch, but not both.
Do not throw the car tires. Don’t. It breaks up the action.

For what I have planned, the winner will be a fluke. I expect most people will get taken down by collisions and less with the sword until the pack gets thinned out. We've done it with 7 tall bikes max, now I'm going to push for near 20, it will be mayhem.

I guess I missunderstood you.
I don't know.
Time: hours 50-100 around there. I have to draw the flyer (2-5 hours) and make copies and send them out or drop them off as well as web postings. Then I have to make or fix all the bikes, I'm making 12 new tall bikes and 20 foam swords for this event. I have to make spoke cards and buttons and route maps etc. I have to have trophies and race sheets, clipboards, pens, a PA system and music. Not to mention the food which thankfully my friend Nathan from Nathan's Tattoo helps me with. Also all the car tires I have to hump around to make the R.O.D. and what ever else needs to be done. The ram bikes all need to be fixed, flats fixed, number plates made, bikes painted etc. So how ever long that takes. It takes me 30-45 minutes to build a ridable tall bike from scratch, and the rest don't take too long as I fix bikes for a living so whats a few more? So it takes as long as it takes.
Money: Parhaps a few hunderd bucks, about 150-200 to feed, 40 for flyers, perhaps 50-100 bucks in bike parts (mainly tubes), Gas for the fleet etc. a few dollars more. About 60 bucks for buttons and spokecards etc.
Anyway I never have added it up, beacuse I do it beacuse I want to. Some people blow 60 bukcs a night on a bar tab and I do this. There are many kinds of curnecy in this world besides money and I get enough out of these events to keep doing them, all out of my own pocket. So I don't care what it costs because the benifits outweigh the costs.

I get there around 9:30-10 am and begin the set up. I brought in everything the night before and have to pull it out of my shop and set up the car tires etc. An extra pair of hands to haul tires on Saturday would be great. If not that then afterwards I can always use help cleaning up and taking everything home.

The reasons why I want filmers/photographers to get an ok with me are thus:
1. I've had TV and Magazines, people "writing" books etc just show up and expect me to let them shoot and make consessions for them. This event is about us, the bike people having fun on bikes, not them. If someone is going to profit from MY event, I want something in return. I think thats fair, but they (being the media types) don't.
2. I want to meet you if you want to film/potograph so I can get copies. I use them to help promote the next ride and to archive the Choppercabras in general. I also think it's fair for me to ask and get copies. I want pictures but have no time to shoot photos as I'm running the event.
Hopefully this will clear things up on that end.

I'm thinking there will probably be two groups heading out from my house, one between 9:45-10:15 of people who want to help, and one around 11:30-11:45 of the people who we couldn't wake up. As much as I'd like to be in the first group, I can't leave my house unless everyone decides to leave with the first group.

Awesome day yesterday!! Was looking forward to this for a long time and it didn't disappoint. Had a great time hanging out with everyone and getting shit faced.
