HIDE MY BIKE!!!!!
Thread started by bfeinzimer at 06.8.09 - 11:44 am

so my building in DTLA will only let me bring my bike up to my cubicle if I remove the wheels adn then PUT IT IN A BAG or some kinda container (think really really big guitar case). any ideas? maybe just a fatty fatty duffle bag. ...O and i havta be able to ride with it in a backpack. ugh ideas?

reply

awh.
perhaps work out a deal with someone/someplace closeby where you can lock the bike to something indoors. or at the very least, under security supervision?
just an idea.

i think bagging the bike daily is a bit of a hassle.

best of luck!

my building only lets people take in their bikes through the loading dock and through the freight elevator. it is then up to each individual office's policy on where you can hold your bike.

of course the security desk didn't tell me this, i had to find out through one of the plant workers here.

Some parking structures have bike racks right in front of the Security Booths, you should try that. I always see expensive and nice bikes on those racks, and no one fucks with them because of the security guards, except maybe the security guards.

I have had luck getting permission to stow my ride in a utility closet.
I asked for and got a key to the closet, which was only used after hours for cleaning the building.
I've also stashed it in a basement storage area.
I would really look hard for some place like a closet INSIDE the building to store your bike. Locking it outside on a regular basis is just too tempting to scumbag bike nappers.
asking you to break down your bike is silly and out of touch. Keeping a bagged-up bike in your work space is not a good solution and cramps your work area.
I suggest finding an alternative space in the building to store the bike, then approach mg'mt with your briliant idea.
There must be a basement, roof access hallway, or some other place where your bike would be out of the way and safe.
In a perfect world, employers should be doing everything they can to accomodate bikes, and one day I fully expect that to be the reality!

welllll

the deal is that they are making an exception for just me and dont want other people to know I am brining in a bike

breaking it down every morning is a pain in the ass enuf as it is but now ima havta duffel bag it or something, so it cant "injure" someone. ugh

where should I get a jumbo oversized duffel bag?

maybe some people just aren't supposed to ride a bicycle to work?

that would probably be a first. i mean if they are trying to stop me from commuting by bike, that would probably be the best way. i can't imagine dismantling my bike every time i have to lock up.

our parking garage has bike racks with surveillance so meh

It's alright, everyone dismisses foldies as impractical. It's not like you're the first.

leave the duffle bag @ the office... when you get there, go up, get the bag, throw the bike in, bring it up.

Yeah I rode that bike cause it was fun to ride! Small wheels make it squirrelly, which was fun even at full speed. Fun bikes make you ride more too. Most folders are rated at a max of 230#, and I was a bit over that. :-) Regardless, I plan on repairing it one of these days.

One of the best folders I rode was one of those Swift folders. That bike was just as rigid as a full size bike.

Just to take a different tact. Is there a parking garage attached to your building that you lock your bike up to? Maybe a simi-secure space + some good locks will help you feel comfortable enough so you don't have to worry about your bike with out having to break up and bring it into your office.

I ride a Foldie hence the handle. But I agree foldies are a short commute choice only. And they are usually more expensive for what you get. Most workplaces should provide that same parking they do for the polluting class.
