Thread Box:
undetachable wheels
Thread started by aksendz at 12.10.08 - 1:14 am

biking home i saw a messenger with only his rear wheel locked. i waited and rested for a while till he came back to tell him that his bike could be easily jacked.

apparently i was talking out my ass because he had special screws on or something. how does that work and where can i get it.

reply

Talk to Lance. I know he got those things for his touring bike.

I'm assuming he had locking anti-theft skewers... you can get a pair @ Bicycle performance for 25 bucks.

Check out the Ptlock its pricy, but seems like it is made really well.

Just a front hub lock by itself is $60! A full set (front back and seat)but the quality looks way better than the other brands I have looked at.

I'm tired of carryin' a cable lock ...
You hear me santa?

I've got onguard locking skewers on my road bike but was thinking bow they can be used for fixed/ss bikes. I haven't tried this but can one use a front Ongaurd/Pinhead locking skewer (both brands look like the same design... plus you can split the cost of the set and give the rear locking skewer to a friend and use it for the front... cut the excess bolt) and use the sheldon brown method of locking the rear wheel and one one be fine?

Keyed lug nuts have worked to prevent automotive wheel theft for years. Just find some with the right threading for your wheels. Or buy some that are small and have a machine shop rethread them to match your axle's threading.

Hmmmm and what did Mr Brown say about rolling with no valve cap on the valve stem?

@User1...

Sheldon brown and valve caps...

"Separate valve caps are not needed with Presta valves. The caps that come with Presta tubes and tubulars are there so that the pointy end of the valve won't puncture your spare tube or tubular while it is rolled up. There's no reason to use them in actual riding."

I think it makes sense... he's Sheldon Brown!!

Sheldon brown is 100% correct about presta valve covers.

pitlock skewers kick ass - check them out for your threadless headset and seatpost binder, too! They work on any vertical dropout or track fork entry...if you got horizontal dropouts you be F'd in the A on your rear wheel, G!

You can buy them from urban bike tech (dot calm i think) for less than peter white cyclery...

I never understood locking headsets till Lance explained to me that the easiest way to steal a wheel that has locking nuts is to simply take the headset apart and cut the brake cable so you can steal the wheel and fork together.

Thanks Al, I'm really surprised the late Mr. Brown rolled without the cap on the valve stems. Makes sense what he said, just that it wouldn't hurt to help protect the valve from dirt and grime with the cap on the stem.

And now everyone knows why I think prisons and capital punishment are a good idea.

With these thieves continually finding new ways to piss everyone off, the soft-treatment for their crimes has gone on long enough.

Like the unfortunate, WW2 vet that got his cruiser jacked in Victorville, bait the thief, shoot them in the legs, then toss 'em down a mine-shaft while still alive.

If they manage to crawl out barely alive, okay.
If not, no ones going to miss them.

Some pricks never learn.

How do the thieves know if we're not simply trying to push them into fear of thievery?

"Sheldon brown is 100% correct about presta valve covers."

Unless you've ended up tearing the little screw on valve off your presta tires more than once, because they've gotten bent or goofed up somewhere along the way, in which case giving them a little extra protection isn't a bad idea at all.
