Coaster Brake Challenge
Thread started by
rev106 at 12.9.08 - 6:52 pm
Purpose:
To have fun, to race, to sweat, breathe hard, to ride hard, to challenge ones self.
We will be hosting 4 Sunday races in the month of January. Each race will have a meet point at 7 am and a race time of 8 am. Most races will be short 1 to 2 hour affairs. Meet points and descriptions of each race will be posted so you know what to expect.
Rules for bikes:
Gearing:
Single speed only. No internal geared hubs (sturmey-archer, bendix two speed kick backs etc.) no derailleur of any kind (A chain tensioner is fine). No external gearing. No gears. No fixed gear. Each race will usually require a different gear ratio and you can have any gear ratio you wish.
Drive system:
The rear hub must be a coaster brake. Single speed coaster brake only. No two-speed kick backs, etc (I know what they look like) Some coaster brakes are better than others, do your homework and get a good one. Cranks of any kind may be used as well as pedals.
Braking system:
Coaster brake only on the rear wheel only. No hand brakes of any kind. No secondary braking system of any kind. No drum brakes, no cables, rods, levers, etc of any kind. You pedal forward to go forward and back to stop. Nothing else.
Frame:
Preference for old double bar cruisers but there are no frame restrictions.
Forks:
Any.
Wheels/tires:
You can have any kind of hoop/tire combo. I suggest a light wheelset that you've laced a coaster brake into.
Handlebars etc.
Everything else is left up to the individual rider.
Coaster Brake Challenge!
Race #1: Hubba Hubba Hubba
Meet at:
Coffee Bean on the Corner of Ventura and Reseda Blvd. Sunday January 4th @ 7am. 18505 Ventura Blvd.
Tarzana CA, 91356
Race time @ 8:00 am.
Day of race sign ups are fine!
We race rain or shine.
This race will be partially on the street and the majority on fire roads. We will start at the bottom of Reseda Blvd and climb to the very top. Once at the top you'll make a right and continue up the fire road for a ways until you see a yellow gate on the left. Go past t his gate towards the Hub Junction (1.9 Miles) once you get to the hub you have to snap your pic of your bike next to the bulletin board and then all the way back to the start. Most of this race is climbing with some moderate descents so make sure your coaster brake works well, you'll need it! Gear your bikes for climbing as that will make your brake you as there are only a few flats on this course you are mainly going up or going down. First one to complete the course wins. Should take around an hour tops.
Race #2 Nature Walk Through Hell.
Meet point 7AM January 11th.
Starbucks
18100 Chatsworth St.
Granada Hills, CA 91344
This is a 50/50 race. 1/2 paved and 1/2 dirt. There will be a few spots where you'll have to cyclocross it across roads and up sections that are too steep for a bike. Each lap is about 3 miles long & should take 30-45 minutes to complete, we'll do three laps. There are a few technical, steep but very short accents and a couple mildly technical, steep but very short descents on the trail. Once you get to the top of the trail head, you'll have to ride the street down to the corner of Tampa & Chatsworth and make a right, that will complete the loop. Most of the trail is mild climbing, but is deceptively difficult as you will see when you run it. See below photos for more information. You don't need a camera for this race.
Race #3: The Fruity Loop
Jan 18th 7am
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
6401 Platt Avenue
West Hills CA, 91367
This is most likely the fastest race our of this series. Mostly on light climbs and flat fire roads you may want to switch up your gearing so you can gain time in the easier sections. The overall course length is 3.3 miles about, we're doing 3 laps. It starts with a bit of a climb and then will have some mild descents and flats where you can really pedal out. The course will be a series of right turns. There is one faster decent on the back side of the course so make sure your coaster brake is all ready to keep you on the trail. There is a mild climb on the back side of the trail after you reach the bottom of the descent. please study the pics below so you can get a feel for the course, you can make a wrong turn and get off course, the trail points will be marked just in case.

So what stops people from doing a pre-run on this? Or is that allowed?
User112.10.08 - 3:59 pm
reply
Sure people can do a pre-run. I want it to be as safe as it can. I don't think it will give an advantage though as a regular ride and a race are two very different things. I did do one on the coaster brake bike and it's doable, the others are doable as well, nothing too steep or technical.
This should be the hardest race you'll ever do. I went with one of my friends that does double centuries on the regular and he said the climb kicked his ass. Anyone who thinks they are hardcore should sign up, this is the proving grounds.

Should I be putting on a 18 or a 36'44'?????

I"ve ran a 36/18 to much effect. I'm doing a 34/19 because we're doing 3 laps. I'd say 42/18 tops.

See, we're actually doing something with the bikes, not just posing in front of a 7-11.
Like it's been said before:
THIS IS NO HIPSTER EVENT!
Being that we're racing miles and doing long climbs and loops that are hard for regular mountain bikes, it's not very spectator friendly. The best view of course is between a pair of handlebars.
Next race should be faster paced.
