Me and my friend Fed lost the wolfpack pack tonight around Ventura and Tujunga. Fed got cramped up and I thought it was a right on Tujunga. Pride is kind of hurt though I thought I was a good enough rider to keep up. I guess not, it was my first ride with them and I kind don't wanna ride my bike no more. I feel like a bitch nigga :(..........Well I didn't die tonight, a Coyote almost did on my way home going down Cahuenga mother fucker came out of the shadows of the niiiiiiiiight! Fucking Ninjaote! But yeh I am sad, but happy I made it home safely.
No worries, man. Plenty of newbs around MR that can't ride with the wolves- they're usually the little bitches you see trying to hijack the front of any given ride.
Props for even trying, I haven't even done that yet.
I don't know man. I was pretty confident, but from the time we left tangs It was cool but we made that right on vermont it was cool. Then we started going up that hill towards Los Feliz. And I just couldn't hang with my single speed, but there was a dude riding a fixie beasting up that hill. We made it to the riverside bike path and I was one of the last to make it there while they all waited. And I was like Ok I'll be able to keep up on the bike path. NOPE! And I thought I was going pretty fast lol guess not. Made it to the end of the bike path once again one of the last to make it. So I was like fuck this I'm going to make sure I keep up with the pack riding on whatever street we were on. And I did for a bit. But the draft line was just to much couldn't do it! UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH Then it ended up being just 4 of us. One knowing where they were heading. But me and Fed soon lost them. But I didn't let losing the pack stop us from finishing what I thought the route was. Me and Fed ended up going the wrong way to the sherman oaks galleria ,did a huuuuuuuuuuge circle! Then figured out the way there. So we were at the galleria for like 5 mins by ourselves utter silence. So I was like "I think Wayne said the ride is going to end in Encino" So I was like lets finish it. So we rode there and to Balboa park and decided to head home. So yeh. :( maybe next Monday I can redeem myself

not that point. you cant put a price on cluttering everything up and knocking down threads that matter. at least this pointless thread was bike related though.

You actually can put a price on the clustering of threads. Since it does take bandwidth and that takes money. Its not pointless to me and I felt like sharing my night.

actually, that was me. i made a wrong turn at cahuenga and led you in the opposite direction. sorry. another person you should never follow is this guy--> he'll lead you even faster in the wrong direction and then zoom off to the front. he's still a nice guy though, so we forgive him.
For the uninitiated, a Wolfpack ride is going up Vermont or Hillhurst is going to be brutal. It starts with a climb and most noobs start at the back of the pack. They will get dropped almost immediately or about a block after they turn into Vermont. As soon as a break forms at the back of the pack there is very little you can do to catch up.
Best thing to do was to start towards the front of the pack. Give it all you got going up Vermont and recover going down Los Feliz. That should get you to the first short stop with the pack and give you about a 5 minute rest.
Then you'll have to do it all over again, going to the end of the bike path. It will be a series of hard efforts then a 5 -10 minute rest. Remember to hydrate and eat at the stops. It will be a good 3 hours of hard riding.
Warming up before the ride will also help.

I did start at the front of the pack. My high gear ratio killed me. And I rode all the way to the spot from Culver city. I so I was warmed up. I'm just not as strong as I thought. I will get better in time. And I rode pretty heavy. Big water bottle and I ate at tangs. No excuses for me besides just being a weak ass rider that will hopefully improve in time. I started in the front at each stop and still got dropped son! That draft is beastly

it's the training ride companion to Wolfpack, and it's on the westside. they dont draft a lot, so when you get your legs up you'll want to focus on that when you're on Wolfpack.
The draft is good. If you stay out of the wind, you'll be more efficient since you conserve up to 30% the effort. Do not stay at the very front, hide in the pack.

If I were you, I'd avoid carrying a messenger bag or backpack loaded down with anything.
I found that when I ride, I tend to deal with headwinds and other maladies better by ditching anything that would create extra drag.
Carry a small, yet essential pack of repair implements on the bike.
correction: they do draft. i don't look at it as a "companion to Wolfpack" either - it's its own ride - FAST and different each week depending on who is leading it and what they have in mind for that week (i.e. E-Rock and jericho1)
Wolfpack is its own awesomeness. just ride your bike all the time.

Cubcamp seems like it would be a good intro to wolfpack, at least for 3 out of the 5 weeks.
Cubcamp rotates the pace level over a 5 week period (I think it's 5!)
This is my understanding of Cubcamp (correct me if I'm wrong)
Week 1: moderate fast, no rider left behind
Week 2: faster, no rider left behind
Week 3: hustle, stay close to the main pack or get dropped
Week 4: faster hustle, stay close to the pack
Week 5: all out hustle

Agree. Cubcamp is its own ride. The original concept was borrowed from the Wolfpack since Richie, a Cubcamp founder, was one of the original Wolfpack riders. But like everything in the Westside, it evolved into a unique ride.

i think that hits it right. but i would turn the mic over to E-Rock and jericho1 - since they have been leading it lately, they would better describe it :)
and yes - sc_nomad: the history of Cub Camp is pretty unique!

eldente: did you remember to keep pedaling instead of coasting? also, the main reason for getting dropped from WP is if you didn't know the route. the group is fast but they do wait to regroup.
Cubcamp is AWESOME Richie started that ride waaaay back as a training ride for Wolfpack but as Richie and Marcus have always done, they invented their own phenomenon coming up with concepts like Friends of the Friendless and the 5 week levels of intensity...
I always tell the people who get dropped to keep trying. I have yet to see someone attempt the Hustleâ„¢ ride more than 4 or 5 times and not make it.
Last night was one of my all time favorites. Absolutely smashed Laurel Cyn Rinaldi and Woodley to chill at Lake Balboa and the Velodrome under the pale moon light... and 32 minutes from the Velodrome to Hollywood and highland? c'mon baby.... cars can't do much better when there is NO traffic on the 101!!
how about we take that team spirit we got from the all city race and start a training group for wolfpack. we'll go on cubcamp and ROOT run and keep each other company while we practice drafting and whatnot.
I love when people say sensible things rather than talking shit..
@Everybody
I appreciate your advice. And the draft was amazing. I just couldn't keep pedaling at that speed lol. I loved the sound of everyone together beasting. But yeh knowing route definitely helps big time. Because we did end up getting lost. I will definitely try again. Wayne was smashing! Last night...he told me it took him 3 tries to keep up with the pack. So I will ride no backpack next time and see how that works for me.
The Wolfpack Hustle lives up to the hype. It is what most people think it is, a fast ride. It is the only MR group I know that has produced a National and several State cycling champions. There are many riders in the group who are accomplished local racers.
Finishing a Hustle ride is an accomplishment in itself. What other ride will visit Sta. Monica Pier, Venice, Staples Center and throw in the Griffiths Observatory, as extra credit, in 3 hours?
Hang in there, it will take several tries. Unfortunately you have to make it to the next stop for the next set of directions, so you might be dropped again. As RB said it takes 4 -5 tries. Good Luck!

im just saying, dont look at ROOT RUN for WP training youll just get dropped the same as you did on WP. on the other hand if you can hang with the pack at RROT RUN youll be able to finish WP. thing about WP that is nice is you have a choice on how hard you want to make it. you can sit in the middle of the pack the whole ride or you can go with the front pack or pull.

i believe you had mentioned that you were single speed...out of curiosity what is your gear ratio? (i'm one of the people who was going up that hill fixed last night, but there are many of us, week after week)
cassidy responding to a comment by eldente
07.7.09 - 1:31 pm
gear ratio wise...um maybe 50 or 48 I don't know about the back so much. I can ride really fast but not as long as the others can. But its weird.. At the all city race....I was hustling no problem at all. I think I was because I was hella amp'ed up. I was pretty chill and tired from riding up vermont to tangs from jefferson. I definitely can keep up with a geared by fersure I believe.
then, as others have said, it seems it's a stamina/endurance issue. you have to build up the ability to spin fast & continuously for 3 or 4 hours. another couple of weeks in a row and you'll be there.
also, i think what you do before WP has a big impact. you definitely need to drink, and to eat, but a few hours before, not immediately before heading out.
the only reason i brought up the ratio is because if you were geared low, even if you can spin the hell out of it, you would have a very hard time maintaining that, and a very hard time catching the draft IMO.

holding on to your first wolfpack takes a certain sense of insanity and drive to not get dropped, and to not hold onto the wrong wheel... dont worry youll get it with enough practice, but please dont use your fixie as an excuse
Choosing the right ratio for the Hustle is difficult since there are climbs; Cahuenga pass, Sepulveda Pass, Griffiths Park, Muholland, Colorado (by Rosebowl), etc. There are also epic decents; Montrose to Glendale, Sepulveda to Westwood; where you hit speeds over 45 mph.
Start with 48 x 17 and learn to spin. Then adjust from there.

26" on both the Trek 800 and the Hummer folder MTB everyone knows me for around here.
The folder is limited in crank-size due to the proximity of the BB-housing to the start of the chain-stay.
Due to "not-enough-work-hours", the Trek 800 is a simple, ghetto-rig with a spare 53t I had from my EZ-1 recumbent and removing the long, dead shifting hardware from the rest of the bike.
Nah I'm not using it as an excuse. I just gotta build up my pedal endurance/stamina. I have a different kind of stamina at the moment. ITG stamina but I stopped playing and started pedaling going to take some time to adjust. I will keep up with the pack sooner or later ^_^

Don't bring some huge-ass messenger bag with a sleeping bag, a bottle of Taka, and some fishing tackle when you are gonna Hustle. I never quite understand why people want to add 10 lbs of ungainly weight when going on their fastest ride of the week. Aerodynamics matter when you are trying to average 23 mph over 50 miles.
i kinda like this eldente character.he does what he likes and says what hes thinking without taking the bullshit other people say to heart.
keep doing that wolfpack thing and youll be doing fine in no time.next time youll know exactly what to expect ,and that by itself will make it easier.

take it easy on people man.so you got 2nd place at the all city gig.thats great and all but it seems lilke its getting to your head.pointing out the obvious to someone thats really excited about something like wolfpack is kinda lame.to me i still think of you as what you call some people a NOOB and for you to be talking down to the new NOOBS seems kinda silly.thats what i think.

I truly believe that The Hustleâ„¢ Ride is the best thing that ever happened to me in my life... It's the only thing I truly truly truly get amped up for and truly truly get bummed about if I miss. all of the regulars that show up every fuckin week and all the new riders that come out to try and all the riders abroad that hear about us and make time to check this shit out when they visit LA inspire me to keep moving... The Hustle Rideâ„¢ is tough love. every monday half the crowd gets dropped. but every monday 20-30 riders show up to do it again.
Last night was fucking WOW even though I got dropped I still loved just trying to push myself and my friend you know. Can't wait till next monday. I'll try to keep a visible sight on back red lights flashing throughout the city hahaha

ride hard, ride often, don't eat a burrito an hour before the ride like I did last night. Though I finished, the first stretch was brutal. That should've been a no brainer but I was starving!
I know this doesn't apply to the iron lungs out there but after my first hustle, I decided to cut out with the ciggies quite a bit and it helped. You'll have your own unique challenges I'm sure.
I'm trying to get my dad to start riding again. He used to riiiide alot. Rocking his spandex with his fat ass. And he smokes cigs. I figured if I could get him to start riding again he may stop puffin the cigs. Don't want pops to hit that good ole cancer trail ya dig!!!!!!! ^_^ But yeh I'ma keep riding hard. Until hustling at 23+ mph for a whole feels like a foot massage lol

U wanna come out to the WH and pump your chest. Get your ass out and train with me man. Remember, you will get dropped again. That will make 2, then you'll do it again and throw up #3 but eventually, you'll do wolfpack and get back to tangs and have that victory Sandwich, donut, & drink. i recommend to people who like the hustle come to root run... Its not as fast but a lot more technical as far as road skills go. This week however were working on climbing, so there wont really be any dropping
Don't get down. I got dropped my first WP out 7 months ago. I was dropped before the second stop. Shit I only made it to the first one because I went the wrong way (big suprise). Anyways I came back for more and just tried to hang on. I am still hanging on.
The best thing for me about this ride is the reward of finishing.
Oh by the way, you missed the Lakers stripper at the first 7-11 stop. Wayne was going to get her number but some homeless guy was trying to get a date from him.
I'm officially dubbing him "The homeless cockblocker" 20 other guys milling about the 7-11 and he's all up in my grill trying to get me to buy him some booze. tell all the homeless people: If they want booze, tell em to lie and say they need money for food, then take the money and go buy booze..duh!!!
Oh and when a homeless person is blocking the view of a sexy female with beautiful legs, climbing out of a BMW, they lose all handout privileges. Let me capture the moment she climbs out of the car, let me smell the perfume as she walks by, then hit me for a dollar. Damn. Did anyone get a picture? A Card? An invite to the Club?

My Saturday Ridetime ride never stopped. I took it off the midnight ridazz board because it was attracting the wrong ridazz. I welcome everyone to come out but we roll 12-19mph, it's a set route and I don't welcome hijackers like user1 with there: "we should go this way, and why are we going this way" and "when are the liquor stops" it's not that kind of ride.
It's the kind of ride you use to get to know your bike a little better, train for something other than a critical mass, set a goal, and enjoy some daylight.
By the way, saw your new ride. Dope!

Getting dropped from Wolfpack is sort of a right of passage.
I wasn't ready for wolfpack until I road wolfpack.
I've been dropped plenty of times, usually do as much to my lack of attention when the directions are being handed out as to my lack of speed.
The bike I currently ride was given to me by somebody I met 1/2 mile behind the pack.
Lots of times I'll take a short cut and be back at Tangs before the pack, to hear the recap, and be first in line for a sandwich.
Sounds like this was a great experience in terms of putting the ego in check.
One of my favorite times getting dropped was on Glen Oaks.
We were just warming up so not going to fast yet. I'd been drafting so my legs felt real fresh. I was feeling real confident because I'd been finishing the last few with the group.
I decided to get some pictures of the pack. My legs felt great and i easily got up next to the pack. rising with no hands to snap away, no problem ...
Then i felt something like a parachute. My fresh legs last about a minute, and I started falling back so fast I couldn't fall into the slip stream.
I was done.
I ended up missing the hollywood way turn and ended up in in paquoima with another lost wolf and we ended getting a ride home after realizing that we were in one of the most dangerous parts of L.A.
Well, I'm game to go down and get my ass kicked from this one of these days.
At least I'm now familiar enough with most of the main drags and where they connect to should I get dropped like an anchor.
As far as getting back into "running back" shape goes, I just need to start hitting the gym like I used to and throw in some night training rides from here to Silverwood Lake and back, roughly 60 miles depending on if I take the 138 or Arrowhead Lake Rd.
so i think el dente just hates whoever is being hated on, and then when he gets hated on for hating someone he doesnt know, he calls everyone else haters.
WTF am I talking about? This here on this thread here - Noob thread

I don't even want you to answer my question. I just want you to sit in a front a mirror and say the following:
You know, he's got a point, duhhhhh!!! do that like 100 times.
If you still don't understand the following point(if people wanna know who I am, they can just ask me, or click on my profile name) then I feel bad for you. Oh and so that we're very clear about my post.
