Tire Salvaging?

Does anyone happen to know how to salvage older tires.
Let's say one of them has a 5cm cut on the sidewall. Can that be saved?
Or just anything you guys know in regards to tires.

Gorilla tape placed on the inside of the cut tire and use it until as soon as you're able to get a replacement.
Side-wall gashes are no joke and could lead to bad day in the park for most.

Bent, I heard I could use an old inner tube, cut it up, and put it in as a protective barrier between the rim and the actual inner tube.
And also!
I could use it as an extra layer between the tire and the inner tube.
Is this correct, have you heard of this concept before?

I once used old inner-tubes as a cheap-replacement for a tire-liner, so by all means go for it.
Just remember to also patch that tear with Gorilla or Duct tape to armor things up a bit.

i had a nice big gash on the sidewall of my front tire. it's an everwear, so it took it like a champ. i rode on it as-is for about 6 months, and just recently put a patch from my patch kit in there. generally, if you can afford a better tire, i'd recommend you go ahead and pick one up from your local bike kitchen. a cheap new tire is better than a torn old one.

Thanks Guys, no, I have good tires; I just have some tires laying around that are in good condition except for some penetration, so thus the salvage thread.

Your foolish if you ride on questionable tires.
When your patched tire fails at speed causing you and maybe
others to crash how cool is it then to be thrifty?
I would rather spend money on tires than gause bandages.
Replace any tire that has a cut or tear in the casing.

If you're going to ride those tires anyway do not put them on the front wheel. At least if the tire fails in on the rear wheel you have a good chance of bringing the bike to a stop instead of crashing.

i personally believe a flat in the front is easier to spot given you know how to handle a bike. i've riddn home 10 miles on front flats.
now front explosion while cornering is something else.
try riding a bike with a flat back tire. unpossible.

if you guys are down with being thrifty when it comes to tires then i want to make some money off of you. what i have here is a year old conti gatorskin, 700x23. it has close to maybe 3000 miles on it. it was on my front wheel and the tread is still there, it isnt skidded through or anything like that. the only downside is that there is a tear in the sidewall. ill sell it to you for $15 and then you can gorilla glue the hell out of it or whatever.
