Bike Mugging: A Cautionary Tale

Earlier today, a good friend of mine was riding her bike in Silver Lake. A car full of young men approached her from behind and cut her off. One guy jumped out of the car, and the car proceeded around the corner. The guy knocked my friend off her bike and grabbed her purse out of the basket on the back of her bike. He then ran around the corner, jumped in the car and they sped off. She was not damaged physically, and they did not attempt to take her bike, but she was unable to get a license plate. A police report has been filed, and she has gone through the whole mess of changing locks and canceling phones and credit cards. Not easy on a holiday weekend.
This could be an isolated incident (because they saw her purse as an easy target in the basket) or it could be that this group of guys sees cyclists as vulnerable. Either way, be careful out there. One of these incidents is plenty.

I don't have any more info than that right now. This is my girlfriend's best friend, and they're out having a well deserved drink currently. I will try to get a description of the vehicle or the guys later if I can.

was this on a main street or a side street? I ride through silver lake almost daily so I wanna be extra cautious.

Yeah, it was late afternoon. It happened on a side street, not too far from Sunset and Fountain.

so it was a 4-door sedan, grey or bluish, honda/acura. there were 4 black males in the car, in their teens or twenties. obviously not a lot to go on, but again, the main point is just for people to be aware.

those same guys stole my friends bike...right by king middle school..
my friend said they live by santa monica and mariposa..just

You're not wrong Craig, the entire reason I created this thread was so that people can be aware of this type of thing and perhaps use more caution. But you're also not really adding anything helpful to the conversation.

Hope your friend is doing better. I think from now she'll put her purse in a backpack or something. Hope she doesn't stop riding cause of this.
