When Agent Orange told me his idea for the ride I flipped. Its a win win for everyone especially the kids.

What we need right now is ideas for meeting points spread out through the city.

This is my list of potential starting points based on already tested spots.

Valley: NH Park- redline @ chandler
West side: Trader joes culver city
East side: LACC or maybe even pioneer
Chinatown: cornfield
Hollywood: pan pacific park

What are the logistics of starting from long beach, sgv and southbay? I'd like to get those areas covered..... We need some locals to weigh in on this.

Once again... Thanks to Agent Orange. I bet this becomes an annual ride to boot.

Sounds like a great idea. I live a few blocks from the NoHo Redline station, so if you need any help with the valley side, let me know.

brassknuckle
11.1.06 - 10:41 am

reply

Yes, help would be great. Basically we just need someone to come forward from each area who is willing to be at the starting points and get the ride moving on time...

We will all coverge on the warehouse party somewhere in downtown... Still on the hunt for a spot. My buddy might have something. But really, if we can't get a space for entertainment then its not that bad..... The ride itself is the entertainment and hopefully it doesn't take much more motivation than that to give a toy to a needy kid. That being said it would still be fun if we could all have a party to celebrate.

Roadblock
11.1.06 - 10:51 am

reply

Yo, I'd be glad to have give some kiddie bikes away. We've got some fixed up rides that haven't been decorated. A group of us could kiddie bike it from the Bike Oven (probably will needa little MTA action to make the trip work).

Is it okay to give a kid a used kiddie bike?

ubrayj02
11.1.06 - 11:02 am

reply

Kiddie bikes sound like a great idea, I'm not sure what the issues are with charities and what they are looking for. I believe Agent Orange is researching different charities. It might end up being a problem to transport kiddie bikes due to size and weight. Most of the toy drives seem to ask for the same requirements of price and size or condition.... Lets see what happens.

Great idea, if many of the 1500 ridazz who went on a ride last summer would participate, we could make a few kids happier maybe.

I'm ready, and I think I got a santa hat around here somewhere. An elvish ride at least for sure.

wearing Santa hats would be highlarious to see.... I'm glad so many people are up for this... this is a chance to show Los Angeles that we arent just a bunch of party hooligans... we're party hooligans with hearts.

How about opening this up to the greater bicycling community? This is something every cyclist in LA would support.

If the LACBC, LA Wheelmen, WLA cycle club, CritMass devotees, mtb'ers etc. got behind this as well it could truly be ground breaking for LA. Something to bring all the tribes together for a common cause.

Viva La Raza en Bicicleta!

Oh, while I'm all pumped, put me down for a ride starting in the West Valley...orange bikeway to NoHo and beyond...

Cornfield party place?

dave
11.1.06 - 1:04 pm

reply

as stated in the text, this is open to anyone with a bicycle! so yes, the entire cycling community all the crews the conglomerates, the masses the coalitions everybody who wants to donate a toy to a needy kid... spread the word!

cornfield is a great idea for the party, however it's totally possible it might rain on that night who knows the risks.... so an indoor party is preferred then at least if it's raining there wont be an excuse not to at least drive over and bring a gift to get in to the party. You wont get in to the party unless you bring a toy. there is a spot right across from cornfield that might be avaialable for this.

Roadblock
11.2.06 - 4:43 pm

I'd be happy to start a ride from Pasadena or South Pasadena that would pass right through Alhambra on the way down. I think it would be cool to have each stopping/regroup point be a rally point for new ridazz to join it. Kind of a 'snowball effect' with the ride getting bigger as it rolls down the hill to downtown.

It could start at Central Park (by old town - where Ride Arc started once this summer), roll on down to the park in South Pas by the Gold Line stop (where the farmer's market is) and then head down to Alhambra and downtown.

If even the C.I.C.L.E. people and the Midnight Ridazz people can't coordinate christmas charity benefit rides, I guess there's little hope for getting other more disparate bike groups to organize together. Oh well.

Just go on both or however many and donate, donate, donate, eh?

LA bicycle community or just a bunch of different people who happen to ride bikes? I'm constantly amazed by people and what they do. I'm just not a people person.

I have a PA, BassBin, and a coffin with 1200's & a vestax mixer (my system can also accept external sources like a laptop or CD players.)

How much of a crowd would this place need to hold?
How about finding a place that has a large parking lot adjoined which we can take over. Obviously a place that serves alcohol and are willing.

that would be the trick... someplace with a large parkinglot would be great... a place that would be willing to have some DJs and bands but you know that might be just a spot that already has something going on. would be nice to have the entertainment be generated by Ridazz themselves. I like the idea of combining the Pasadena/South Pasadena groups with NELA/Highland Park. The ride from South Pasadena to Higthland Park is short but very sweet - you cross a high bridge over the Arroyo Seco and you get some great downhill on Figueroa.

Here is a link to what I had in mind: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=546881

I made the route finish at the Cornfield because (I think) the final stopping point has not been announced yet. I also think that having the meeting points near the Gold Line stations makes it easier for ridazz who don't do uphill to join the ride - they can take the train home and end up right where they started.

Anybody want to do a scout ride some night next week?

thanks superfish! we need some people to start the rides off from each route. got all of them covered so far except SGV. can you take Culver on? basically its just about getting the ride started at the right time so we can all meet at olviera and roll out from there... I am going to do culver but I might get caught up at the club (if they confirm) screwing around with whatever needs to be done there.

other things we need are photocopies and help spreading the word to other bike sites and bike stores once we nail the event spot down. I'm still waiting for a response from this one spot otherwise, the reality is we don't really need a spot we can just mob the cornfield and I'm sure Big Bike Dan's ipod will be enough sounds.

nice route..........its the return leg of the downtown to the SG Mission ride.

my weekend scouting didn't go as planned, (shit happens)

at the latest, this time next week it will all be in stone.

the route we're scouting heads northwest from el monte to get to the NELA point in highland park

i don't use the pedometer thing (one computer is too slow, the other is at work and i can't put too much time into it), but it should be like this

west on valley
northish on mission
westish on main
then either north on atlantic to monterey
or use huntington north to fairoaks north to monterey
and then westward to figueroa
and then up 57 to the station

its a little goofy, but that the route to meet up with NELA

I you decide to do amplified sound in the cornfield I found a good place for a generator.

Economy Equipment Rental in e.LA
on whittier blvd. (323) 869-9180

is only about $40 and will push 2.5k of power for 6 hours using 5 gallons of gas. not too loud either.

They are pretty mellow there. Only take a $100 deposit and a drivers licence.

I may be out of town that weekend.
However if I am arrround I am down to help out with sound.

Unless of course amplified sound becomes a problem with el Popo
in that case i guess we can bring maracas and banjos.

actually if you dont mind Raymond, lets keep the routes seperate until olvera street please. unless it's an added leg (for example from pasadena) there really isnt a reason to re-route SGV... that route that Agent Orange proposed is actually pretty sweet 9 mile ride and We are really hoping to cover a whole swath of the south east LA that isnt being covered it would be great if we could get those areas happening on there own.

I suppose we would need a permit for the cornfield.... but then again we would need a permit for just about anything we do. why start asking now? lol. the reason I'm lobbying for Agent Orange's route is becasue it dips down south and I'm hoping to pick up some ridazz from down there. If we dont have the critical mass so to speak for that region then that's what we have. we can't force it. if there arent enough people to make the Agent Orange route work that's cool connect it to NELA.

whatever routes we decide on, lets finalize the maps together none the less by wednesday... is that cool? that way we can get the word out to the bike shops and forums.

I'll be riding from downtown long beach to school (CSULA) tommorow... i plan on taking the bike path as much as possible, so if it looks good it wouldn't be hard to modify that route so we can meet up with the rest of the rides... so i may have a route made up from long beach via the LA rive bike path. Im trying out like a million different routes to see what would be best from long beach...TRASHBEAST has informed me that if all of alameda is like it is between 7th and ceasar chavez, then it is FULL of train tracks which like to eat tires for breakfast..

so even though it is the shortest route from Long Beach..it is scary...

if this is not true then it should be cool..but we do not know...Ive been looking at other routes and if the bike path is open from long beach up to district ave. then we could take it up to there and then proceed on streets up to olvera..it would be about 23 miles total...

if the bike path is closed however, which BEAST will find out tomarrow, then there will have to be another route...we will see, we will see,

btw we volunteer to be the voluteers for long beach! YEAYY!

all right long beach kids...here's my ride scout report...
step one: GET THE DIRECTIONS RIGHT! the lovely miaou.distruktion said "get off the bike path at atlantic, and then take district down", which i cleverly reversed, which was funny because of course there IS NO DISTRICT EXIT FROM THE BIKE PATH. so i rode my bike to montebello today. that said, up until the point where i rode way out of the way and then got lost in montebello, it was cool!
i'll report back in a few days on a second scout ride where i actually follow the correct directions!
that said, here are some things we should keep in mind on this glorious ride down the la river bike path...
1. there's glass everywhere, especially under the overpass where it's nice and dark, so we should all have spare tubes. i've got tire pulls and a pump handy, so don't worry if anyone doesn't have one.
2. did you know that the la river is a wind tunnel? for those tough enough to ride back home, it will be fun. but on the way there, it's sorta windy.
3. RABIES SHOTS. get em! wanna know why? it's cuz you'll be riding along, and then you'll see large wild dogs 20 feet away right when there's a sharp drop into sewage infested water on one side and a big wall on the other side and vultures overhead, and you'll go "please don't notice me, please don't notice me, oh my god, i LIKE my achilles tendons!!! NOOOO!!!..." but they WILL notice you. and they WILL CHASE YOU. FAR. and they don't care how tired your little legs are, because they want to eat you! so just, you know, keep it in mind and stuff.
4. birds are pretty! there's a lot of really amazing wild life (besides rabid bloodthirsty hellhounds)... i got to see a few hawks, egrets, blue heron, various gulls, tons of ducks and sandpipers and lots of other cuteness!

ok so seriously though, this ride is going to be rad. granted, there's a few things to watch out for, but it's not like it's worse than dealing w/ hordes of 18 wheelers, drunk drivers and craziness like that. we're gonna kick ass, deliver some presents and rep the LBC! huh!

new, unwrapped (still in its original packaging) gifts.
anything you might buy for the children in your family is a good guideline.
gifts for teens are especially difficult to come by because the cost is prohibitive: mp3 players, CD's and CD players, clock radios (because we all have a difficult time waking up), DVD's.
stuffed animals, lego, whatever is popular with children.

Another Long Beach to Olvera St route for the Toy Ride.

I checked out a couple of possible routes for the All city toy ride. One was Alameda all the way up and the other was Long Beach Blvd all the way up. I like Long Beach Blvd better... it is wider, is one of the main steets through several cities so its well kept and smooth and there seemed to be less diesel truck traffic. So I'd like to suggest this route as an option.

Meet at the corner of 1st and Long Beach Blvd (the 1st street exit on the blue line). Ride all the way up Long Beach blvd to where it meets Alameda blvd (just before the 10 fwy) then take alameda to olvera st. Oh and Long Beach turns into Pacific just before it meets alameda. If this sounds good I'll scope out a few rest/regroup points for the ride.

here is the mapquest of the meeting point:

hey 11hzrobot... if we take the bike path down the LA river there's no lights or traffic to worry about, also there's nice little benches along the way where we can chill for rest stops. i posted sort of sarcastically about it earlier, but it does seem like a good route. i'm trying it again tommorow, and one of the big things i wanna look into is the best place to leave the path and hit the streets... atlantic (just past slauson) looks like a good place, but i wanna ride it just to make sure.
if there's some horrible secret about the path that i'm unaware of (wildebeasts, 20 eyed monsters, various ilk of a general nature), lemme know... i've ridden home from downtown before and took alameda for a good deal of the way... it was nice. either way, this ride will make much kicking of ass!

Long Beach Blvd. is looking kinda good. But then, if Alameda is OK (i.e., not full of treacherous railroad tracks), then shouldn't that be the route? Since the river idea was basically a way to avoid Alameda (I think)?

on another note ....

the 99¢ store in silverlake on sunset has battery powered strings of xmas lights.

i know the many of the ridazz like to light up the night. so, if you are lookin' to string up some lights on your bike check the 99¢ store.

I think they have red, white, and mixed color strings.
and of course they have cheap ass batteries that should last the ride.

trashbeast,

I did the LA river ride today and its cool, we would definately make better time if a good part of the ride is on that path. What do you think of this route:

LA river path to Imperial hwy, exit here and go left to Long Beach blvd, Make a right go all the way to were it merges with Vernon. Take Vernon to Main st, make a right on Main and take that to olvera st.

I did all but the main st part of this route today, I took alameda up from vernon instead, but that section has got some major ruts, train tracks and big rig traffic. Once i got to the destination i back tracked through downtown looking for a better final stretch, I met another rider who says he likes Main st So i rode back toward the blue line on Main st and i liked it. It would be a cool street to finish the ride on, right through all the big buildings in downtown.

here is the pedometer of the route:

URL for this route is: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=568040

Yeah, I was just thinking Alameda is good because it take us right to where we're going. Long Beach Blvd is more of a straight shot from Long Beach, though. Either one of these is good from the standpoint of people who may want to join up from South Central, Watts, Compton or what have you.

11hzrobot - i did the bike path today also! did you see the "shared path" signs w/ the bicycle and horse on it? that made my day.
i took the river all the way to the end (at district/atlantic, just past slauson), took district (which was ok-ish) to downey (which rocked), then on to olympic (nice smooth st which has a nice bridge section going over some railroad yards) onto central and then just sort of meandered down to olvera.
here's the exact route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=568251
i REALLY like the idea of taking main... i'd wanted to do it, but didn't think that anyone else would want to go out of the way for it.
after saying all of this though, i should say that i'm not dead set on this route... i like the idea of staying on the river as much as possible (bcs it's an interesting ride and there's no lights... BIKE FREEWAY!!), but getting off at imperial hwy also works... i've never ridden through that area and i'm sure it's fun.
PC - i like the idea of meeting up w/ other rides, but it seems to me that the bike path would be a good place to meet... and alameda isn't the most fun in my experience. even though the bike path goes a little out of the way, i'm pretty sure that it's faster than long beach blvd.
that said, if everyone wants to take long beach blvd, i'm down. i like my route best (no surprise there), i'm also a fan of 11hzrobot's route and i'll do PC's route if that's what others want to do.
most importantly, what does everyone else think?

TRASHBEAST
11.30.06 - 8:22 pm

yeah i noticed the signs. I also saw a couple people on horses, not on the path but in some kind of corral off to the side. I saw all kinds of birds too, that was cool. I don't know if there will be much to see at night though. Looks like you found a pretty good way to get there. I'm not to crazy about alameda either, and LB blvd all the way up from downton long beach will take longer. So yeah, either of the two river path routes are cool.

yeah I too would like it much better if we could stay on the path as long as possible to avoid the lights/cars and it also would make the ride alot easier on me since once we reach olvera st. we still have to ride with the whole group for several more miles to drop off toys..I think..Im not sure...

..and Ive been on the bike path at night and yes it is dark..but most of the birdies are white so you can still see them..they make cute squeaky noises! :D and if you look carefully youll see a heron or egret or two..I like those guys...they are cute..they look like dinosaurs and are super long..but yeah...bike path to streets of not too much craziness = super cool!

OK, I guess nobody likes my idea of riding on the street all the way up. I just like to share the love with the public, is all. But there's no denying that the river path will be faster and safer, assuming people pay attention to what they're doing and nobody drunkenly falls in. Whatever; I'll go with the majority.

You know you want to join the NELA route!

Meet us at the Highland Park Metro Station:

151 N. Avenue 57
Los Angeles, CA 90042

START TIME 9:45 pm

If you're coming from far away or have to drive, go to the Gold Line station in Chinatown at 901 N. Spring St - Los Angeles 90012. If you drove just park your car at the station, then take your bike and get on the train towards Sierra Madre for only $1.25 and exit at Highland Park. This should take 10-15 minutes and takes you exactly where the NELA ride starts. The ride from Highland Park to the final destination is just 5.5 miles and brings you less than a mile away from where you started at the Chinatown Gold Line station.

Come cruzz with NorthEast L.A.

If you’re up for a little longer ride, join us in North Hollywood. It’s about 15 miles, all downhill, and you’ll get to ride on the LA River as well as through Chinatown.

We’re meeting at the North Hollywood Redline Station at 8pm:

North Hollywood Redline Station
Lankershim Bl. & Chandler Bl.
North Hollywood 91601

WE'RE RIDING OUT AT 8:30pm

If you don’t want to ride back at the end of the night, I suggest you park your car in downtown, and take your bike on the Metro Red Line from Union Station to the North Hollywood Station. Make sure you catch the train that says North Hollywood, and not the one that says Wilshire/Western. Your safest bet is to catch the 7:30 Red Line out of Union Station to make it to North Hollywood on time (you may even want to get to Union Station a little early since the trains never seem to run on time). It’s $1.25 and the North Hollywood Station is the last stop.

We hope to see you in North Hollywood

The Times, maybe, or even the local TV stations (after all, we'll be getting to Olvera Street at around 11:00, which just happens to be time for the local news)? What's not to get right? It's a holiday toy drive. It happens every year...the Harley riders do it, the Highway Patrol does it, the longshoremen's union does it...by now the media guys can cover this kind of story in their sleep. Even the ditzoids at Channel 13's Happy Fun EZ-2-Digest Celebrity & Sports Newz couldn't fuck this one up.

seriously who cares if they show. we have youtube, a much more relevant medium. I tell every news media company who asks. they can come under one condition. if they ride bikes. that's what KCET agreed to and that's surprisingly what MTV agreed to as well. so they got the scoop. cars and vans get in the way. do we really want to see the likes of Chris Blachford or Fritz Coleman yucking it up and talking up all the cliches about bicycle power and yada yada?

Well, there ain't no train from Pedro to Long Beach, but if you don't want to ride you can put your bike on the 142 LADOT bus (catch it on Seventh anywhere between Harbor Blvd. and Gaffey) and that'll put you right at the Long Beach Transit Mall.

If you're riding, here's a cool route to the beginning of the ride that mostly keeps you off of Anaheim Blvd and gives you a nice harbor tour: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=577695

tavis - by a geographical accident, the start point of the ride ended up as the anaheim entrance to the bike path. when i tested out the route, that's where i started from, and so that's where tiffany and i started the gmap from, cleverly forgetting the fact that rides usually meet at bikestation, not at some random point on a bike path.
i think that i'll wait at the bikestation just to make sure that anyone who assumed (w/ good reason) that it's the start point doesn't get left behind. Then i'll ride over to anahiem and meet everyone.

(I guess what Im getting at is that he needs to be reminded) ALSO dont forget to wear your santa hat! 420:

Harry Bridges Blvd. is way nicer than Anaheim because it doesn't get as congested and there are fewer traffic lights. You just have to not be afraid of big tractor-trailer trucks.

11hrz:

Next time, just take Pacific Avenue south, make a right at 39th St., and make another right at Gaffey. Go up a brief, steep hill and then look on your left for the entrance to the Korean Bell (that's what we call it here).

Kinda like this, if you're starting from Harry Bridges and John F. Gibson: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=577949

Yup. That's the requirement. if the media is going to cover Midnight Ridazz they have to ride. No wimps allowed. and that rule will filter out the talking heads who don't know what a bicycle is or think it's something for 5 year olds. besides, it's just dangerous. on the serious tip, when ABC covered us they tried to drive along and it seriously disrupted the ride. they got yelled at by everyone and in the end it was all for what? 30 seconds on the boob tube? big deal. these rides have been planned with great love and care each one to be a unique experience. having news vans buzzing around is useless and detracts from the experience. news people are useless. I actually saw a headline "Cat stuck in tree news at 11" just last night. that's news folks.

on the other hand... we have our own camera crew doing 1000 times better than the major media. look at our camera crew of true Ridazz: Glo Rider Studiodrone Agent Orange Rollers .. KCET was so caring in that they made sure to talk to everyone and really understand what the Ridazz is all about. I feel confident that the vibe will come through in their coverage. and they asked that one of our own Ridazz film and cut together footage and studiodrone did a killer job. killer. just wait till you see the final cut.

shannono - if you're on anaheim, the way to get on to the bike path is a little convoluted. if you're heading west on anaheim, go through the light at oregon, but turn into the little side st. just past the light. this takes you to the bike path. watch out for glass.
if you're heading east down anaheim, turn left on oregon and then quickly turn left into the little street that parallels anaheim (sort of an extended u-turn).
here's a better explanation than i can offer:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=578639

if your group wants to meet me at bikestation however, that works! i'll be there until 8, and then i'm going down the path to catch the ride. everyone in my group is going straight to anaheim, so there's no risk of getting left behind if you wanna meet up at bikestation.
