No, it doesn't. Even assuming that users will click on the "comment" link to see what exact posts people are responding to, which I seriously doubt, it doesn't provide any information as to which part of the post is being addressed. So, to make this clear to readers, the poster either has to
a) do what I just did and insert the pertinent quotes, thus making your "quote" function (as I keep saying, it's actually an attribution function) entirely superfluous; or
b) phrase his own reply in such a way as to remind readers of what he's responding to, like we use to have to do with friggin' snail mail (or on the web, before there was REAL quoting functionality in forum software). "And regarding your second question, darling, of
course Muffy and I are free on Saturday..."

A useless function is nothing but obtrusive.

you keep quoting the word "quote", but i don't think i've ever referred to it as a quoting function. if you want to quote, then you can do what you just did. my function does something slightly different, so it doesn't serve the same purpose in call cases, but most of the time you just want to let people know what you are responding to, and then it serves that purpose. i actually do click the link to see the comment when it's not clear to me what the person is talking about. maybe other people do not, but no one has complained about the function until now. maybe you should suggest a better idea.
