anybody know of good/decent fishing spots in the LA area?
preferrably somewhere you can get fish and it's safe to eat (unlike balboa lake and SAMO pier where you will have gut wrenching diarrhea).
would people be down to do a fishing ride?

my girlfriend worked on this project a few years back. i know it doesn't answer your original question, but it has a lot of good info about what types of fish NOT to eat from what areas, what actual parts of the fish to eat and what parts to cut out, etc..
DO NOT eat White Croaker or bottom feeders from san pedro/palos verde area.

I used to go this spot (creek/ river) by Lake Pyramid, I cant remember the name of it but it gets stocked frequently (or at least used to) and was fun as hell. Sorry I cant remember the name of it, but i bet you could find it using google search skills.

Hansen dam is the place to fish and it's in the valley! Good clean trout! this place is stalked with fresh fish weekly i think but they have BBQ pits and trail for bikes yes lets do this! More info here

I used to do a lot of fishing in high school. Its been awhile, but I don't think a whole lot has changed.
During the winter months, the Department of Fish and Game stocks trout. In the summer months, they start stocking catfish.
Local holes would be...
Good Local lakes include:
El Dorado Park Lakes, Peck Road Lake, Santa Fe Dam, Castaic, and Pyramid (I'm probably missing some)
Local streams/rivers are tucked into the wilderness and would involve balls-out riding to get to...
Not to mention all these places require a fishing license (you can get a two day fishing license for under 20 bucks). I've seen a Game Warden a grand total of about 5 times since I was born. But if they catch you with no license...your screwed...they take their job very seriously. Not to mention poaching is highly frowned upon in the hunting and fishing communities.
If I was going to plan a fishing ride...I'd go to Redondo Beach Pier (or other public pier). No fishing license required. Your chances of catching fish are pretty good, because the water plant next door heats the water up around the pier (redondo beach). This makes for good mackerel runs. Mackerels are not very tasty. They are considered a bait fish among most fishermen. Cool thing is there is no bag or size limit. Redondo is also known for the occasional halibut, sand bass, stingray, leapord shark, spider crab, etc...but state law regarding size and bag limit still apply even without a state fishing license.

The fish at hansen you can eat they come from breeders who sell the fish to people like the Hansen Dam who stalk the man made lake..Let me tel;l you these trout are so freaking good with a little lemon some MRS dash and a beer! Woooo hoooo.... Hansen Dam has it all ...

One positive thing about where I live is that there are three, good sized lakes within riding distance.
There's Mojave Narrows, Hesperia Lake, and then Silverwood Lake about 25 miles from my house.
These lakes have all the fish your sportmens type would go for.
Trout, Bass, good-sized Catfish, they're all well-stocked and even breed to good sizes in the deeper parts of the lake.
While Mojave Narrows and Silverwood lake require a state fishing license, Hesperia lake only requires a $15 fee for a total of five fish, regardless of weight or type caught.
I haven't gone in awhile myself and perhaps I should start making trips out there as an alternative my usual ranting.
Perhaps I could turn all of that into, "LOOK AT THE SIZE OF MY CATCH MOTHERFUCKER!!!"
Or, something to that effect.
On a side note, myself and two other friends rode our shit-bikes up to Silverwood via-Summit Valley Rd onto HWY 138 and back, about 9 years ago.
I've been trying to get a group to come up with me, but everyone would rather drive now.

Stocked fish are always safe to eat.
The DFG will not stock fish if the lake cannot "support" them. They send a guy out to test the water before they stock.
Lakes stocked by the DFG (From Fish Hatcheries), require a state fishing license.
There are pay-to-fish lakes also. These lakes buy the fish from the hatcheries and have them planted. They charge an entrance fee and have a bag limit established. They do not require a state fishing license. Some of the fish these places stock are HUGE. They are breed that way. Kinda like a fenced hunt...

and place is gross.
i've done water testing there for microbiology classes awhile back and my results were crazy.
soooo many chemical and biological pollutants.
i'm really hoping hansen dam is not like that.

Hansen dam is dope man trust me! If you want salt in your fish go to the salton sea! LOL....Im going camping at lake skinner for my brfday the last weekend in May with some friends who joined me last year.You can rent boats fish BBQ theres a new aquatic center winery's for tasting off roadinghot air ballon rides! yall welcome to come just jump in on the resorvations with us and we are good!

In that case, it sounds like the state may be cutting back on testing and just throwing the fish in there.
From what I remember, the fish don't last very long anyways. Rainbow trout are pretty stupid fish (hatchery fish). They usually group into schools, hence easier to spot in the water. Spinners chucked at the right depth will murder them when they roll in schools (usually right after they're stocked). The smarter ones get caught on powerbait. The remaining fish either die, get eating by cormorants, or are eating by bass.
Catfish on the other hand are very strong. And they are sluggish. I've seen them last in lakes of all types for a long time. They're kind like carp.
Would I eat them?
Ehhhhhh...I'd rather catch and release trout in those conditions you listed.
The quality fish are up in the less industrialized areas.
Thats not to say I've never eaten rainbow trout out of local lakes stocked by DFG...I have...and I'm still alive...so I wouldn't be TOO worried.

I used to go Night fishing on the venice beach pier to catch and release for fun and practice my skills,Well any way i was using squid as bait and cought about 14 sting rays in less than an Hour the first 3-4 where pretty Fun but then they just got annoying and i wanted to catch some thing else...I did catch some weird looking giant earthworm looking snake thing...i took one sting ray home just to try to cook i9t and well it's pretty much all cardilage and non edible! (at least for me)Except the guts! carnitas,LOL....Now there is now fishing for me like the High sierras i cought about 18 rainbow trout and had food fish galore for the next 2 weeks! Going back up there in august for a 3 week camping and riding trip! Wishon village!

I miss fishing. Used to live in New Hampshire where there was great trout fishing in gorgeous rivers and great bass fishing in the ponds and lakes. Here's a great pike I got on a trip to Ireland.

Just got off the phone with the hansen Dam aquatic center the Number for them is 818-899-3779! The WOman i spoke with told me they just stocked the Lake with trout on april 02 and they also just had a fishing tournament on friday! The swimming area is closed but the fishing spot and bike trails are open! She said fishing Day passes and Bait are available at Big 5/REI!!!!I If you plan and having multiple fishing poles you must obtain a diffrent kind of liscense!!!! Parking is free if you drive! She said fish and game show up and give tickets some times so get your liscences!!!!!

you can get a rod for about 15-20 bucks or less at big 5 as well. saturday/sunday dont matter to me as long as We start riding a little early so we can get there at a ligid time! I know for a fact that when the weather is cooler the fish come up higher and when its warmer they get lower in the colder temp water! Ill be there make sure you post it up so me and any other people interested can see it...
