Thread Box:
The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time: The Thread, Part Trois
Thread started by theroyalacademy at 02.24.12 - 4:57 pm

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).

This is the newest thread for it.
Please do not post to the old thread any more, and certainly not the even older thread, as that could be become confusing.
And we like things to be very, very straightforward. Obviously.
This is the newest thread for it.
Thank you.
You're welcome.

reply

Because, seriously, that old thread was becoming ridiculously slow.

OK, so maybe a little more than 3.14159 square miles, if we're being sticklers, but we only overstepped our bounds a couple times. Any corrections or clarifications you all might have are welcomed.

Not in a million years could I offer any corrections or clarifications... I'm amazed you could remember ll those turns and loops. I enjoyed this ride.

Oh, the link at the top of your post is for this page itself -- not the gmap page. I wouldn't mention it except that I enjoy saving the routes!

NOT ENOUGH INCONVENIENCE

I'm not sure if the double u-turn before turning into the Brass Monkey parking structure is properly marked. Or the bit of hallway I rode in before getting kicked out of that building, wherever it was.

To the best of my memory, nothing to correct. Such a fun, loopy ride. I liked climbing the stairs only to loop back down to the base of them a minute later.

U-Turn!

I'm also happy I saw the light and got three tacos afterward.

Oh, if only. But there was this place I'd been meaning to go that's vaguely St. Paddy's day themed, and the 14th being close enough to the 17th, well...

Besides, we sort of got our pi on two weeks ago anyhow, and there will be other opportunities for pie, right? Maybe if we do a Twin Peaks ride or something. Failing that, Wednesday, March 14, 2018 is just around the corner.

Sorry again to the group who showed up in clipless shoes... Normally, it wouldn't have been a problem. (Though it is hard to say if we really have a "normally." The ride is sort of normally abnormal.) Hopefully, you still enjoyed getting some good climbing in.

So glad to be back on this ride. i can kinda do a 3-donut ride which was a good test for me since i have missed so many donuts these past 8 months. iced green tea + sludge and fresh crullers were an excellent way to end the night but i did miss their original size and see through plastic cup. it;s just not the same when you can;t see the beautiful green/brown mix that scares people for some reason.

oh yeah, "E" is for "Emperor" and "H" is for "Hadrian" for some reason i was thinking "E" -"Eruditus" but i have no idea why. good thing i didn't blurt it out yesterday so that i may broadcast the foolishness to all this morning.

Just want to give advance notice that there will be no actual ride on Wednesday, May 30.

Why such advance notice? Because, instead of the usual ride, a bunch of us are going to the Last Remaining Seat screening of Paper Moon that evening and, if YOU want to go too, you should buy tickets soon (we were going to see The Big Sleep a couple weeks later, but that sold out before we could get our act together).

What is this all about, you ask? Well, Last Remaining Seats shows classic movies in classic (and often not normally open to the public) theaters. This screening is at the Los Angeles Theatre, the last and most extravagant of the Broadway movie houses downtown.

There is no meet-up before the screening and no ride to the theatre. We're just going. May 30th, about a month from now.

Yeah, this is probably the first ride in a while that's unambiguously deserving of a 3 donut rating.

The northern 1/4 of the route is pretty ridiculous. But on the bright side, 3/4 of the route is smooth, mostly flat pavement!

nathansnider

So then my question would be - I wanna bring my thin tire road bike, is that a bad idea? We going bonkers off-roading? Don't mind hills or exerting, but don't wanna wreck my ride ;)

steveisaacs
responding to a comment by nathansnider
10.10.12 - 1:53 pm

The unpaved riding this week is nothing that we haven't done before on skinny tires. Those portions may not be especially comfortable, but they're not especially long either. There will be more off-road bike walking/carrying than off-road bike riding, meaning that there is some advantage to having a light bike that won't strain your arm.

So if you have multiple bikes, hopefully this is enough information to help you choose!

steveisaacs
responding to a comment by nathansnider
10.10.12 - 6:34 pm

reply

There are quite a few stairs and at least one lengthy portion walking on dirt and dry hillside vegetation.

If you have a choice, I'd recommend against clipless, but the last time I warned (too late) against clipless shoes, the people who showed up with them anyway didn't seem too bothered.

I guess it depends on your tolerance for that kind of thing and also what kind of clipless shoes you've got (the recessed MTB shoe variety maybe being easier?). I'm not a clipless wearer myself, so I'm just making an educated guess.

NO RIDE THIS WEEK!...

It's good to have rituals. Morning coffee routines. Weekend farmers' market runs. Wednesday night bike rides. These kinds of things provide a rhythm to one's life.

But it is also good to punctuate this rhythm with special occasions, to break up the regularity with holidays, anniversaries, and, yes, days of rest. This week the Passage takes a day of rest. We stay in with our loved ones. We regroup, refresh. And we'll return in the new year, fresher, groupier, with more of our regular irregularity.

It's gonna be great.

But perhaps you've been resting a lot lately? Perhaps you've barely been riding at all? Maybe you're off work this week and want to get out on your bike, gosh dernit? Well, we're not going to stop you. WE'RE taking a week off, but that doesn't mean you have to. Similarly, while we never repeat our routes ourselves, we want to remind you that our website has all* of our past routes mapped out on it, and there's nothing preventing YOU from heading out from the donut shop on Wednesday night on one of them.

Here are a few "classic" Passage routes you could try:

#27 - Dendrophilia (seasonal!)

#33 - Trouble Till the Robins Come (Lynchian!)

#44 - Ra-Ra-Rasputin (Russia's greatest love machine!)

#66 - Endless Summer (vibrational! excitational!)

#73 - Bunny Slope (restful!)

Or if you prefer not to attempt leading yourself on one of our convoluted routes, consider following the generative rules of this one, creating your own unique route in the process:

#68 - Cruciviaverbalism

But there are nearly 200 to choose from, long and short, flat and decidedly not. Certainly you can find one that suits your fancy.

Or you can just rest. Kick back. Chill. Eat some baked goods. That's what we're going to do.

And we'll see you in 2013!

* Okay, we're a little behind on posting them. ALMOST all our routes are on there though.

So now after Dixie canyon, I was curious: are there any canyons as yet un passaged tween the 101 and the 405? Maybe it's impossible to tell, but the canyons we passed on Mulholland looked familiar. What a beautiful stretch that was.

On the south side of the hills, there are only a few canyons that we haven't followed all the way through, but the north side is still mostly "un-passaged." A current version of our cumulative map is here, if you want to see how much remains to be explored.

Now get to work on that pie!

Also, glad you liked the route, PennyFarthingale!

Also, let me reiterate the following from this week's ride post, in case people have missed it:

There is no Passage Ride next Wednesday night. Instead, for our 200th ride, we are starting a series of four weekend Passage Rides, which will take place on Saturdays during the day. Stay tuned for the details of those. For now, what you should know is that we will be taking the Metrolink out of town for these rides. A weekend pass for the Metrolink costs $10, and we will probably be taking trains that leave Union Station around 9AM and returning on trains that start their journey back around 5PM.

The rides themselves may be a little longer than the usual Passage Ride--perhaps 35 or 40 miles--and will progress at a slightly more leisurely pace, with stops for lunch and such. So there you have it. Next week, there is no ride on Wednesday, the 22nd. There *is* a ride on Saturday, the 25th. Take note.

One of the most charming routes I have had the pleasure to enjoy. Take note of this lovebirds. This route was one to take that special someone on a tandem ride.

Only downside was the confirmed terrorist sighting. At the historic corner where the first redlight photo enforcement cameras where installed. Down with the redlight photo enforcement cameras. No terrorist on US soil!

When you are stopped from Jayriding by a terrorist the terrorist wins. Naahhh, actually we won. All of us who attended this ride won.

Thank you theroyalacademy.

what ever could be thrown in at the first leg of this ride to make it more confusing and annoying happened. Construction sites, motorcycles, aggro cars, people yelling and jumping lights, so many forks in the road. Yet it ended up mellowing out as the evening progressed and I felt it was a delightful time for myself and hopefully the other Few People for the brevity of time we shared. As always helmets off to Nathan for taking us to a most fun destination (Monster Park brought out the playfulness in me ) and The Royal A for keeping the ride together.

If I knew we where going to hit so many gazebos I would have prepared some speeches. Maybe that is why you didn't mention it.

Sexy's review of #241 is a big thumbs up.

Loved the mini circle of death (more like a donut hole of fun). Another joyous night of riding.
Who says cyclist shouldn't passage on sidewalks? Not me, thePassageride.com or the City of Los Angele's Municipal code 56.15. Just watch out for the safety of other people on the sidewalk.

Route was full of charming streets and pathways of which I would never normally travel.

If you haven't been on a passage ride because of inferiority issues don't fret. They are very kind to those who have trouble with the hills (and will wait for you).
They are tolerant to those who are not as cerebral cultured in academia as The Passage leaders are (especially when it come to writing).
They have a special ability to ignore and tolerate people (like me) who bring silly antics to the ride.

Wherever the passage take the participants, and however the ride turns out it most likely will prove to be a didactical experience for you.

bummed I didn't get to the GWAR like bike ride. I was fully rested and full of energy. I couldn't get to a cross bike and make it at the same time. Looks like I might have been able to handle the route on my road bike. I was so looking to at least try and most likely end up hold the ride back. :( NO gagging me with a dirty hill.

This was the most intense group bike ride I have ever been on.

Climb a hill, climb another hill, hikes some stairs, climb another hill,
Go down a hill a little bit, climb up another hill, hike a trail, go down a hill
and then go back a hill and hike some more stairs. ride up a another hill,
hike up some more stairs, ride over to the pathway. Hike through a forest,
down and then up, ride a skate board hanging off a tree on a rope. hike up,
ride over to another pathway, then hike down, Ride up another hill climb some stairs.
ride down a hill and then ride up a hill.

What an adventure that was.

Intensity level. More doughnuts than I care to eat.

It was fantastic. I did it. Only walked up two hill a few feet (partially for both). I think I can finally make it up these hills. Not strongly, but I made it up them. Sorry to subject everybody to my grunting.

For me personally; five slip and falls (two standing on a steep hill, three hiking with my bike), two near crashes while riding my bike., One episode of nausea
(my legs, body and energy level said yes, my gut said NO) I stopped and rested before I throw up. One flat (thanks Nathan...I mean that sarcastically and gratefully - more the latter) Nathan broke my stem pumping my wheel up for me and then pumped my new tube up for me.

Theroyalacademy and Nathan did this with out breaking a sweat or panting per usual. Thank you to the Gentleman John who inspired the route.

I went to sleep for 45 minutes, got up, slept or another 90 minutes and that was it. Too tired to go on, to exhilarated to fall asleep

Sean extreme Passage ride was extreme!

I don't remember the pace of #241, but the pace of this ride will be quite beach cruiser friendly. It's also only about 3 miles to get from the donut shop to the screen printing party, then another 4 to get to the dance party - all of it pretty easy.

Thanks to Skeleton Key for the excellent bike hookup and of course Sean for the really fun route. I arrived home really really late so I definitely got my money's worth. I can't believe you and Nathan are still going, after five years... TPOFPTARBMIT is truly a gift for LA-kind!

Also, I would like to ask all Regular and Irregular Passage riders reading this to try to show up next wednesday for the ride! We are going to film the Passage (again) in all its glory and would be oh so grateful to have your participation!
