So whoever or whomever the powers that be are, please delete this un-editable ride.

Being that it's a leaderless ride, It could/should go to Downtown L.A. or wherever it takes us.

For west-siders riding over, I assume Crank Mob park is the usual CRANK mob meeting place at La Grange and Sawtelle?

And how many miles do you think the ride will be? I've got a couple kid sisters visiting and want to bring them along. But they're weak weak weak on a bikes.

0gravity,

This is going to be a late night ride, but we'll get peeps to a light rail station to make it back to their starting point. The best way for you guys to get back to Crank Mob park is to take the Red Line to Hollywood & Highland. From that point it will be mostly downhill.

The ride Friday will be going to downtown to watch an all American movie, then rolling afterwards to areas not visited recently by LACM. Expect chaos.

Allan,

I know you are in charge of the route this time, but is it wise to get people to sit down and watch a movie when all they want to do is ride?

skd
06.23.08 - 1:40 pm

reply

Um, there is no finalized route. It is yet to be determined, no one is really in charge of it. Also this is a ride, not a trip to the cinema.

If after the ride is complete, people want to independently go downtown to see a movie or get a couple of drinks at the Golden Gopher, that is their perogative.

The ride always ends where it starts. Also ROTW Javier had some ideas about a possible route through Hollywood into Beverly Hills....again the route is yet to be determined. Nothing is set yet.

Stewart,

This is not just any movie. This is a movie that will inspire all to be a true and loyal patriot. You aren't against patriotism are you? Being that it's close to the 4th of July, it would only seem natural to show our patriotism early. So we're going to go see Made in America. It will be outdoors and it's free!!! Did I mention that we could bring and enjoy our favorite American beer too?

All the info is here!

Allan,

I just think that put to a vote, the group won't want to sit in a theater when they can be riding. It just doesn't seem very LACM to sit in a theater and watch a movie.

Seriously though, anyone who wants to see the movie can go (and even lead the ride there) but it's mindbogglingly unlikely that the majority of the group will want to jump off their bikes for a documentary.

LACMrules,

I planned on having mikeywally mixing this night. He's been working hard at getting the just right patriotic mix that will inspire us to the greatest nationals we could ever hope to become.

Allan um I mean two sexy, user1, user 2.0, etc,

You can take whomever wants to go and sit for two hours to watch a movie to downtown.

I will take anyone who wants to ride, including the visiting Canadian riders (it would be bad form to force them to watch a US propaganda film), on a real LACM ride . Riding all over the city in a show of force, which is what LACM is all about. We might even meet up with the Venice CM. Then we'll meet up with the People's Ride at Sunset and Vermont around 10pm.

Anyone who wants to join us, just follow me and the Canadians.

How's that for democracy?

Also I am not Stewart, like Rod Stewart...I am Stuart. Like Stu and Art. It isn't a Biblical name either.

Stuart, LACMrules, and that dude you were logged into that had to miss the ride cause of a mechanical last month,

The Canadians would love to see how we celebrate our love for our country! As soon as we mention movie and beer, they'll be there! Plus we won't miss a thing since we'll be riding till the wee hours of the morning. Plenty of time to ride!

I also want to let peeps know that we'll be getting you to a red line station to get you back to the start, if that's where you need to go. Really it's pretty easy and last trains are like 1am.

Freedom loves it's neighbors!!!

What's happening?

LA Critical Mass has been great for the past few months. Why all of a sudden is there this hijack to a movie crap?

We don't show up every month to go to a movie, we show up to ride.

The 300 people who are showing up from the Facebook event are not going to follow anyone to the movies. We are coming to LA Critical Mass to ride. Whoever leads the pack on a ride will be our leader.

I hate to make political comparisons, but the word "communist" is being bandied around. Which is hate-word used by those who harbor intolerance and prejudice.

Since I started riding LA Criticial Mass again in February, this ride has been like an Obama rally. Full of hope and excitment. You could always count on good time riding around the city to cheers and applause from drivers and pedestrians.

This upcoming ride sounds like a McCain/Bush/Cheney organized event. Rigid, not happy, ultra patriotic (which is a veil for intolerance) and just a mean and hateful situation.

I prefer the way LA Critical Mass was before.

We don't have to be so hateful.

User1 has a route in mind...lets do the route, when we get to the Movie Place we split into two groups

(Freedom of Choice is a beautiful thing!!)

1-those who want to watch a 105 minute movie
2-Those that want to keep riding.

Group 2 goes off to meet up at Rite Aid or find the Venice CM group. Maybe we will all get some real miles on our bikes this month.

Group hug!?!?!?!?!?!?

If you want to ruin a ride, do it elsewhere. CM has a history, and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with movies. ..but hey, knock yourself out, SITTING AND DRINKING FOR TWO HOURS BEFORE YOU GET BACK ON YOUR BIKE IS A SPLENDID IDEA! This should be one of the biggest CM's and it's going to be split by some idiot idea to watch a movie? Hows about you pop in some cinderella or whatever you're into, BEFORE THE RIDE, then go RIDE, at the BIKE RIDE.

i think lacm should start earlier that 7:30 pm because there is more traffic.

the more traffic, the more impactful lacm is.
the more traffic, the more we slow down the capitalist machine.

to me, lacm is about asserting the rights of cyclists, and role modeling a better lifestyle (more environmental, more focused on community, more focused on individuals not having there hands held through life). it isn't about drinking, it isn't a party.

maybe next month, through group consensus, we can have lacm start earlier?

lacm riding earlier next month, +1

LACM is supposed to be leaderless!!!

what the fuck is going on?

skd?!!!!

User1??!!

what happened to people just showing up to the location and riding? especially since skd is so vocal about routes and planning, it makes a new rider feel like there IS a leader and it puts such a sour taste in my mouth.

skd: may i ask you to back off next month and see what happens?

user1: you used to be anti-route and planning. it seems that because skd appears to be 'taking over' LACM, you also feel like you should have a say in route direction (which i understand).

leaving earlier than 7:30-8 would be ideal. the ride seems to leaves a bit later ever month.

When I first rode Critical Mass there were 20 people, less by the end of the ride. I didn't take over Critical Mass, I was one of the many who tried to resuscitate it.

It shouldn't be about one person, it should be about the group as a whole. What are their needs and wants.

This conflict is occuring between a small group, some of whom do not care what the larger group wants. I urge a voice vote on Friday, and I am sure the majority will choose to ride.

This why the Westside is better at rides and organizing. Less ego, better organization. I am an Eastsider by the way.

I'm really bothered by this un-American talk. The ride is about freedom, justice and the American way! The only route that's scripted is the first 4 miles to the movie. You want to go up and down a steep route? Go ahead! I just was considering the music trailer, fixie ridazz, and anyone else that prefers to go around a steep drop.

After the movie is over, the route is completely open to go wherever. Plus we'll be rolling with peeps that don't normally make the CM ride. Peeps from Highland Park. Plus plus we'll be going to areas we normally don't go. Now what red blooded American isn't into exploring new areas?

As far as starting earlier...is that what the group wants?
Anyone ask them? Maybe somebody should.

Five or six of us post up here on the forum, many times making all the decisions for 200 or 300 riders. Is that fair or democratic?

Does anyone even talk to the riders at Critical Mass? Or do you just hang around in your own little cliques at the rest stops?

I would feel more comfortable if there were a larger cross-section of riders represented in the decision-making process. Right now that isn't happening.

RIght now I regret even getting involved in this ride. Not because it hasn't been a great ride these past few months, but because the bickering and venom is oppressive.

Allan,

Critical Mass is about the people who ride it, not you or me. I never worked in your interest or mine, but in the interest of the majority of the Critical Mass riders, who complained about the oligarchy.

I was tired of hearing the small group of "leaders" say, "we'll take 'em to East LA or downtown." No one ever asked the riders where they wanted to go, you just led them where you wanted to go...sometimes leaving them stranded in unfamiliar territory.

I endeavored to give a voice back to Critical Mass riders. If it stepped on your toes....good.

Stuart,

You've been involved in the last 3-4 LACM, posting and PLANNING routes. I finally decided I had enough of you running the show and the only for me to do was to claim a month to do my own ride. Remember discussing everyone having a turn at putting the ride together? It's in the archives if you forgot the details. I claimed this month ride and you STILL got your fucking hands into it!

Leave the fuckin ride alone and let the group take it where it wants to. That's been my goal all along. I wanted to plan this ride to the movie because it was mine to plan. Yes people will have a vote at the start, and yes they'll have the say so when the movie is over. This will be by far the most I'll be trying to control the ride. But it's not the last fighting you and your stubbornness to leave this ride alone!

Annie,

What upsets me is the disregard some people have for the riders. I don’t want to lead, I prefer to follow….it’s a lot easier.
But when people endanger the riders, particularly the new riders, I get angry.
The West side tries to insure that their rides remain safe and that riders aren’t left hanging out to dry in unfamiliar territory.
Some who ride on with LA Critical Mass have an element of “fuck em” if the rider is lost somewhere south of USC or five miles down Caesar Chavez they fend for themselves. That doesn’t create a cohesive bicycle community, nor does it make for a pleasant riding experience. Until people stop trying to hurt the riders, I will speak up.

I apologize to everybody (except USER1) about the redundancy of the question. I don't know the answer or I wouldn't ask it . All that I'm asking, is if USER1 rode on any of the freeway rides or not. I know he has read the question over and over. I just wish he would answer it. I have no idea why he wouldn't answer it. @User1

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure the answer is no, that plaza is not public space -- it is a part of the privately-owned development. But the area behind the plaza where the Metro elevators come up, off Shatto, that probably is.

My question is: do many riders actually take the subway to LACM? That is not rhetorical; I am actually curious. I don't recall seeing many people coming up from the subway station at previous rides, but maybe that is because W/W is indeed not the most convenient station to ride to (assuming one is coming from the N. Hollywood direction, not downtown).

All in all, I don't personally see the situation as all that broken, not sure it needs fixing.

My first CM was in San Fransisco. I am group riding today because of that ride alone. Nearly two thousand people hit the streets in a completely impromptu ride. Eg: A trolly stopped in front of us; thankfully, everybody up there knows how to ride their bike. Here there would be a 12394871234 post forum about how we need to avoid trolly routes, pussies.

It really sucks that LACM is all about routes and movies and stops and circles of death. Fucking ride.

I don't know what clown gave user1 the go ahead to claim this ride as his own, but that is fucking stupid. People should be turning any which way. Afraid of a hill? ..walk your sorry ass. Afraid of a right turn? ..use the goddam crosswalk.

I believe it was Mr Walsh who reminded us all of some of the best aspects of CM, one of which is the fact that this is NOT a party ride. We are talking about LACM as if it is a party ride and this website is in control. This website, it's users, and everybody else who plans to participate is no more a leader than I am. IF YOU RIDE CM YOU ARE LEADING EVERYONE INTO A MORE BIKE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY. A COMMUNITY NOT SHORT ON MOVIE GOERS.

I think everybody needs to enact the STFU policy, here and now, that will be next months undiscussed ride.

I just hope all this carrying on is for nothing and the ride goes off without a hitch (or leader or fucking movie).

User1, you want an "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!!!111" ride, fine, but do it on your own time. This is LACM, figure out what that means and you might just realize how quickly you are spoiling a great WORLDWIDE "bicycle" movement.

PS: I'd think you were equally idiotic if you were taking us to a movie about bicycles.

I don’t know what the fuss is all about.
LA Critical Mass has been great for the past few months, and it doesn’t appear to have a leader.
The group seems to be in control more than any one person.

Also this forum seems to only contribute a small percentage of the riders to this ride. The monthly post on Facebook, LA Fixed and Yelp is where the bulk of the riders come from. So anyone on this forum who is trying to “control” the ride, is delusional.

The other forums don’t mention a movie or an “America First” theme. It just says this is a ride to exert your right as a bicyclist to the road. Come out and ride!

So please don’t tinker with this ride. It has been working great so far. And if it ain’t broke, it don’t need fixing.

Eric Hair, It is always a pleasure to read a post by you. I wish I could be attending, but my responsibilities will not let that happen. Maybe if I had a pedicab, but my budget does not allow that. Thank you for the compliments, you are always a pleasure to read on this board.

As for a certain other person, they are the exact opposite, namely USER1. You went and decided that it would be cute to try to do a parody of my bike family name. Not only is it not funny, it is insulting and annoying. I don't think that what I say will effect you, you tend to annoy most people on this board, and when brought to your attention, you continue on with your actions. I don't appreciate you using my family name, you are not sexy, you will never be part of the sexy clan. You might not like it, but the reality is the name Sexy is synonymous with myself and my girls in this community.

You tend to get very aggravated by the web master on this site, you are lucky he is the type of guy that he is, most people would have canceled your accounts, and not allow you back on with your sham sign ins.

No I'm not Satan On a Tricycle, if I have something like that to say to you, I will say it under my name, as I'm doing now. You are a very disrespectful person, it is too bad, your actions cause unnecessary strains in the community.

I know this request will be meant with, excuses of what I do and say, as well as you blaming others, or with the words "I don't care". I would like to ask you to please take the time to re-evaluate your actions and words on this board. They are usually not constructive, nor in the best interest of our community

Went on my first LACM ride about third group ride and pretty eye opening. Gangbangers who deal drugs go on this ride and of course one threw a beer in the air that almost hit me. I told him that was messed up and he got all gangsta on me until this big guy stepped in (sorry bad with names). He of course backed off him but kept his focus on me and him and his gangbanger buddies put their Midnight Ridazz bandanas on and followed me the rest of the way threatening to "cut me". Of course this was a problem since the ride was where it was. Do I get stabbed by a gangbanger on a bike or one on a solo ride home? hmmm... I told a couple MR guys one in a green shirt and a big guy in a black shirt and they were really cool but I was a bit perplexed that they were like, "Yeah they deal drugs and are acting totally crazy but there's nothing that we can do about it, it's nobodys ride." So I did make it home safe but had getting shanked from behind in the back of my mind most of the way home.

I'm not sure if this is a MR thing or a CM thing I do know that the gangbangers had MR gear on and socialized with most of the CM leadership. Either way to have shit like that go on and basically have everyone tolerate it tells me these rides are much more dangerous than advertised. I empathize a bit with the leaders of the rides but from what I can tell it was mostly a non issue with them. I guess they'll wait til someone does get stabbed or shot for looking at a gangbanger rider wrong. I was totally shocked that there was no support other than the small group with me and that one big guy. Everyone else just kind of sat there even though that mini me cholo was clearly out of line.

Defnitely my last ride LACM, will never do MR being associated with drug dealing gangbangers. There has to be some sort of rule guidelines like maybe 1) You can't threaten to "cut" other riders after you throw a beer at them and 2) Dealing drugs on the ride will not be tolerated (duh?). I guess none of this means anything since half the group was high or drunk anyway. I will do my best to tell others to stay away from these rides unless they want to be part of a mindless group of lemmings who live under the fear of retribution from MS13 drug dealing gangbanger wannabe fixed gear bike messenger assholes from hell.

Hi, who the fuck are you to question me you goddamn moron. We were arguing on the bridge for about five minutes and it certainly was tolerated by the other riders. As far as the gangbanger reference goes it refers to the behavior of the individuals in question not their race. I intentionally did not mention the race so as not to disparage others of their race who are normal people. So before you question my integrity why don't you ask any other riders if they saw what went on. I do not mean to make light of anyone's negative experience on a ride. That shit shouldn't happen, PERIOD. People should've stepped in and helped, PERIOD. I am sorry they didn't.

That being said, my reaction was fueled by two things: First, my surprise and disbelief that such a thing would indeed happen (except for the occasional drunk asshole, I have always found rides to be very friendly and inclusive). Second, the manner in which you described the incident not only did not ring true, but also did seem tinged with more than a little prejudice ("gangbanger"? "cholo"?).

Anyway, I am done with this. I've spoken my piece. I leave it to people who can speak with the benefit of first-hand experience of the events. It is way too easy to descend into these online arguments. And anyone who knows me, knows that I try my best to look out for other people on rides and help make a safe environment for all riders.

Per Rayzor's comment:

I was there, it sucked.

It started when the aforementioned gentleman in the camo jacket / bandana, etc., sprayed the side of a passing van with a shaken can of Tecate, and then launched it back over his head and it landed heavily not too far from where Rayzor and I were standing.

Rayzor called him out on it, the guy initially said he was just trying to throw it over the bridge, and then got defensive and in Rayzor's face, and I took Rayzor's side, because if we don't self police obnoxious behavior it will get policed for us and then the rides won't be fun (or possible), and then people got cranky and argumentative.

Luckily, despite any threats that may have been uttered, there was no actual violence, for which we may all be thankful.

I think this could DEFINITELY have been handled better by all sides.

Saying you were trying to throw a half-full beer can off of a bridge is NOT AN ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE to almost hitting someone with said beer can, because throwing beer cans off bridges is exactly the kind of stupid shit we should be avoiding on these rides in the first place.

I and Ray definitely could have done a better job keeping our tempers in check and been more polite.

I mean Jesus, I'm a friggin' crisis counselor in my spare time, if anyone should be good at de-escalating situations, it would be me. So I'll try to do better next time.

The guy who chucked the beer could have done with a little less defensiveness and a little more accountability,.

But hey, that's how it goes.

It looks like we all made it home safely, and hopefully nobody's holding any grudges (As far as I'm concerned, it's over, we're all cool, and the next ride will be happy fun time again (as 99% of this ride was)), and that's the important thing.

But what do people think about self-policing this kind of nonsense?

What's the best way to go about it?

I don't think ignoring it is acceptable, but I don't want to see people giving up on joining mass rides in L.A. because the people causing this nonsense threaten violence when they get called out on their behavior either.

But like I said, we all made it home safe, so hopefully next month will be as much fun as 99% of this ride was.

Geezus? What is everyone doing on the internet at 3:00AM? Don't you people have lives and jobs?!! Hippies!

Eddie we called you and held the phone up to the mic, but it was garbled.

Anyway, great route tonight. Thanks to funanu, matt, and fuzzbeast.
Most of the people loved it. Yeah, some people rode up to me and complained about riding through Skid row and the homeless encampments, but this LA. Sometimes it is important to see certain sides of town that you never see. And the old adage continues to hold true, you can't please everyone all the time. Most riders were happy and that's the best anyone can do.

Second issue, the incident on the bridge. I did not witness it, but rayzor did come up to me on the bridge and mentioned it. I also spoke to some people at the Vons parking lot later who did witness the incident and tried to intervene. So it did happen. Again, like Crank Mob, there was more alcohol than reason, and that probably escalated the incident. The positive aspect is that no one got hurt. I don't know who was involved besides rayzor, but we should probably all try to be more aware of situations that spiral out of control. As JB posted, we do need to come up with some conflict resolution guidelines, because we can't have this kind of thing ruin a ride.

Two riders got tickets for corking and running red lights. So they will have to do the continuance, delay, trial by declaration crap to get out of the tickets.

On to lighter and positive things.
Roadblock rode with us tonight.
As Eric said, the spirit of the group was fantastic. Lots of screaming and yelling.
Mickey Wally's playlist played at Wilshire and Western and you will have to ask him to post the songs.
The Barleye playlist played throughout the LACM and the People's Ride. Again you will have to ask him to post the songs.

The second ride (Peoples Ride) through congested Hollywood was great. COD on Highland and Hollywood in front of two LAPD patrol cars was pretty gutsy.

The best part of the night was the fact that it was a ride. Relatively short rest stops and longer riding.

Finally I am going to reveal a deep dark secret of this forum. Most of the bickering and conflicts that occur here is just theater. Like Jon Stewart said when he was on CNN's Crossfire...'this is all theater."
In real life Allan and everyone else get along very well, so don't be fooled by the words and venom that is spewed about here. It's just the internet.

Also, pulling the trailer tonight made me realize something that few of us are aware of. Harry does this job 95% of the time and it ain't easy. So please thank Harry the next time you see him, because he really is the hero of these rides.

If you did the LACM and the People's ride and returned to Western and Wilshire, the ride was 27 miles...give or take.

Rest up ridazz, tomorrow night is the Beach Party Ride!

i witnessed the incident with rayzor and JB. i don't know them personally. the guy with the tecate was definitely the instigator. as things seemed to escalate, no one paid much attention. i walked away from the situation so as not to get hit by stray gun or knife-fire. also, i absolutely abhor violence. i told the guy pulling the trailer (skd) that a fight was about to break out and he made an announcement on the PA about leaving for hollywood soon that mostly diffused the situation. but, in addition to the guy with the tecate, one of his buddies came up in a black baseball cap several minutes into the argument holding a small kryptonite lock in his right hand. i assumed he was planning to use it as a weapon. anyway, awful situation. can you imagine if that beer hit someone down below? there really is a growing level of idiocy on these group rides. anyway, much has been said about that incident. but, no one has mentioned the poor corking of intersections. anyone near the front of the ride witnessed and heard two things:

1. approaching nearly every intersection, we were yelled at to either "fucking stop!" or "run it!", often at the same intersection (by the same voice). this confusion caused several near crashes.

2. some guy/guys would ride into flowing cross-traffic to try and hold it. at one point on vermont near beverly (i think), a dude on a blue fixed-gear rode into the middle of the intersection forcing one car in each direction to stop in the middle of the intersection as the light went red. i felt badly for the two drivers who were know stuck in the middle of an intersection on a red light as dozens of riders rode around their vehicles. wtf? there are right ways and wrong ways to cork intersections and keep the ride flowing. this was not right.
last month's critical mass was far more enjoyable than this. i don't know if it was the route (hollywood/echo park/downtown), or the music, or the leaderless leadership. but, i know at least three people that won't be going back to LACM, at least for a while.

crank mob for it's size and drunken stupidity was a lot more fun.

I like how the incident is just brushed off by most. It's "theater" if it's just one guy jawboning to another not if him and 4 of his cholo buddies continue threatening for the entire ride. I think what it was is most of you who saw the incident were too scared to say anything except for JB who didn't hesitate to do what he thought was right. I guess you may as well let the ride evolve to Crips, Bloods and MS13 Mass where basically everyone will be scared to speak out when something ridiculous happens to you or anyone else. Fuck CM, Fuck MR. You're all a bunch of useless morons I hope those drug dealers (acknowledged by many other riders I spoke with about them) lead the entire ride off a goddman bridge (literally and figuratively). None of that was directed at JB although I'm sure this does not reflect how he feels.

Look, rayzor, you're passing judgment on a huge group of people based on the actions of a few. I unfortunately missed the ride, so I can't comment on what went down on the bridge, but even by other people's account, it sounds ugly.

I don't see how you think that people are brushing it off. Now that the incident has passed, what do you want them to say, exactly? Maybe more people should have tried to calm things down at the time, but now all that we can do is try to make sure the same thing doesn't happen in the future.

And it's fine to be angry, but at least direct your anger in the right direction. "You're all a bunch of useless morons"? Seriously? I know that people's online personalities are different from their real-life personalities, but if you reacted to the guy throwing the beer can the same way you're reacting here, then I'm not surprised that things escalated.

Having read the thread I believe I know the people you're talking about. I mean, I noticed them. Camo jacket, teal fixie with red wheels. HEY RAZOR, the theater mention has nothing to do with the incident...he was referring to people debating having a route on LACM or if someone was a leader of LACM......If you have a few minutes, read this entire thread and you'll see what he means.....it's basically looking in hindsight and seeing that it was a really great ride for 99% of the group and all the bitch slapping on this thread is water under the bridge.....I can imagine how fucked up it must have been to get threatened.......sorry to hear about the drug dudes. hopefully you'll cruise out for more rides sometime. please don't ask that i get stabbed or shot or thrown off a bridge or hung by my feet over the l.a. river.....all those would really suck.

yeah. that's the perp.: camo jacket, red trucker cap, teal frame/red wheels. first he shook up the beer can and sprayed it onto a van slowly passing through the intersection (with the drivers' side window open i might add). then, he chucked it over his shoulder into ridazz chilling on the sidewalk. i assess each dangerous situation on it's own merit. this one, i felt would have escalated to physical violence had i or others come to surround you. when i walked away, it was two bigger guys rightfully telling off the camo dude and his smaller friend. they were only words at that point. and, i thought that building an audience would have only pushed the camo guy and his friends to start throwing punches.

as long as we're kvetching...when we were stopped at the rite-aid waiting for the people's ride to begin (before my friends and i decided to head back to the westside), i was talking to a friend when some young kid shows up with a 12-pack of corona bottles for the teenagers next to me. he opens the box and starts pulling out the bottles and popping them open one by one, using a bike pedal for a bottle opener. as he does this, i notice not only is the beer spraying all over the place (including on bikes), but that he is using MY pedal. my bike was upside down, so i didn't recognize it at first. i said 'what the fuck are you doing man' (or words to that effect), and the kid looks at me dumb-founded...like i'm out of line. he offers me a beer, and i say 'let me just get my bike out of the way. he glares at me again and walks off. wtf is wrong with these kids? anyway, i digress.

so, how is this 'leaderless' ride going to police itself?

I joined up at the people's ride. At the end at echo park, I talked to this guy and he seemed fine. I heard about the story (from him and other people there) after talking to him for probably 15-20 minutes.

I didn't see all the shenanigans going on earlier, but as a latecomer I saw no reason to have a problem with the dude. Actually he seemed like a pretty chill dude.

Even if he actually was dangerous, what good is calling him out going to do? I am always going to prefer flight over fight, that's just me and my scrawny self though.

DEAR MR/CM COMMUNITY,

I REALLY THINK THAT THERE IS SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON!!! I DID WITNESS WHAT WENT ON LAST NIGHT AND
RAYZOR OR WHOEVER HE IS, SHOWS UP FOR HIS "FIRST" RIDE AND IS NOW SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE "LEADERSHIP" AND SUCH.
I WAS THERE AND ACTUALLY TALKED WITH CAMO JACKET DUDE AFTER RAYZOR CLAIMED HE WAS ABOUT TO BE "STABBED" AND WAS ASKING FOR "HELP".
I RODE OVER TO CAMO JACKET DUDE (AND HE WAS ALONE) AND ASKED IF HE SAID HE WAS GOING TO STAB RAYZOR, HE SAID "NO, HE WAS JUST GOING TO KICK HIS ASS BECAUSE HE WOULD NOT STOP TALKING SHIT EVEN AFTER HE HAD APOLOGIZED", CAMO DUDE MENTIONED HE WAS FROM SF CRITICAL MASS AND THAT HE USUALLY DOES NOT APOLOGIZE TO ANYONE, BUT DID TO RAYZOR AND THAT RAYZOR WOULD NOT ACCEPT IT AND WOULD NOT QUIT TALKING SHIT ABOUT "ALMOST" BEING HIT BY A BEER CAN. I CAN SEE FROM RAYZOR'S POSTINGS THAT I WOULD PROBABLY WANT TO KICK HIS ASS AS WELL IF HE KEPT TALKING SHIT TO ME. OH YEAH, RAYZOR WAS TWICE THE SIZE OF CAMO DUDE.

I THINK THERE ARE PEOPLE STARTING TO RIDE WITH MR THAT ARE NOT WHAT THEY SAY THEY ARE. WHAT THEY ARE, I DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE: COP? ASSHOLE? SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PUT AN END TO THE BIKE LIFESTYLE? OR MAYBE EVEN A CORPORATE OIL SPY THAT WANTS US TO STOP RIDING OUR BIKES AND GET BACK INTO GAS GUZZLING CARS. HA HA.

BUT WHOEVER AND WHATEVER "RAYZOR" IS, IF HE SAYS "FUCK MR AND FUCK CM" THEN I SAY TO RAYZOR "FUCK YOU AND FUCK OFF".

LET'S GET RID OF ALL THE LAPD AND SMPD SPIES!!!

Heh. Is it Sabotage, or Ill Communication?

nathansnider
06.28.08 - 3:13 pm

reply

the question to ask is... are we looking to "police" ourselves or simply keep the good vibes flowing? there are always the few who act rowdy and take it too far... but what I've noticed since the beginning of MR is that it usually takes 2 or 3 rides for these "bad" people to understand that it's about love and respect and they calm themselves down and then they actually become defenders of the cause or they simply go away. The group is too strong and rooted in love and F.U.N. to be overcome by some bad apples. remember The rides for better or worse are put on by the community and hey, sometimes they are insanely F.U.N. and sometimes they have problems... at the end of the day it's a public gathering and it's amazing to see how well everyone gets along given the diverse racial ideological and class boundaries. try to be open and to love everyone. take the high road. yadayada

and just because someone says "fuck CM and fuck MR" doesnt mean we need to retaliate with a "fuck you" back IMHO... but it does raise suspicions when the profile of this person is only days old and he's talking A LOT of shit. The real deal? Rayzor has another profile albeit only a week or so older than his new profile and yes there he was on another thread talking trash about another ride's organizers and being extremely antagonistic about it. This kind of behaviour is simply NOT COOL and hurts our community. rayzor, can we get some love instead of hurt?

so to continue the line of thinking... what we have here is apparently a case of Ill communication, Sabotage AND... having a whole new profile gave him the feeling like he had a LICENSE TO ILL!

There was some Thompson back talk to the SMPD last night. VCM played some pickup soccer on the SM CIty Hall lawn and SMPD showed up - just one officer - like 10 minutes after we had finished our last game. He said "we got a call about some people vandalizing vans" (this part according to Poe.) Then he changed it to "we got a call about some people vandalizing bushes."

We were explaining politely that we were playing soccer, and then we didn't do anything to the bushes except lose the ball in them a couple times. Like we told him, there's thorns all over those things, if anything the bushes tried to vandalize us. He just kept talking nonsense, and at some point Paul told him it wasn't any of his business what we were doing, and asked him if he could prove we'd done anything.

Just hearing Paul say that made me five times as mad at the cops, because what the fuck, we told you what we're doing, now leave us alone. As I climbed to my feet I told him "We've explained enough now that we haven't done anything to these bushes. This is a public space, and frankly I agree with him that it's really none of your business what we're doing here." - some tense talking occurred, and then we left.

I talked to a lot of cops at CRANK MOB and everything was koscher. But people shouldn't be cops and idiots at the same time. I'll tolerate shit from cops . . . to a point. It irritated me that he was just gonna keep asking the same question over and over when we kept explaining that we didn't do shit to the fucking bushes.

This whole time there were 7 cop cars and the chopper a half mile away searching some car and arresting like 5 guys. So SMPD has all these cops doing that, and then sends a guy to harass us about the bushes . . . aren't there other places in the city that need attention?

Yeah I'm a cop/spy who works for an oil company. The reason I posted was because the guys in the green shirt and black shirt who claimed to be part of MR asked me to. They know what I look like so if they ever see me on another ride yeah I am going as a spy.

Still line, I do remember our convo and did not realize I was upsetting you. As far as littering I have no idea what you're talking about. It is time for this conversation to end. You guys are right, I'm wrong. I'm a cop. I made it up. The blue bike/red rim guy behaved well. Next subject.

rayzor
06.29.08 - 2:05 am

Thanks, Justin. I've since replaced my rim (actually the very next day). I showed up at Cal Plaza and made the mistake of trusting the people there. I'd hate to say that it was a rider that stole the rim, but it's more difficult to imagine a road bike rim being stolen by a passerby. Anyway, my rationale for being so lax when I tied up my bike was, "This'll be no problem - they're all riders. No danger here." Just when you believe that people can be trusted, some ill-mannered idiot reminds you that you're living in an American city, where mistrust is a way of life and one of the main ways that we can communicate with each other.

Now, I'm back to putting up my guard. It was a nice rim - obviously, the guy needed it more than me.
