I take lots of pix too personally and professionally and I understand the photographers' right to take pictures in public places.
However....
I do have a beef with some wannabe paparazzi who are not regular ridazz and show up at some rides with their big ass cameras and even bigger strobes and stand within a foot of people having a good time and flash at 6 flashes a minute the hell out of what is meant to be a beautiful night.
There is a point where the photographer can be so intrusive that he kills the spontaneity and alters the nature of the event.

That's why I use a point and shoot on rides. I'm just taking snapshots, not looking to make art, so I figure using the craptastic camera is advertising that fact.

Remember how people used to smoke in bars or at parties in order to have something to do with their hands? Maybe it's the same with cameras. Either way, it's pissfuckshitgoddamn annoying: as soon as somebody does something the least bit spontaneous or funny, forty or fifty little paparazzoids bust out with their cameras and start snapping.
How 'bout this: see if you can limit yourself to four or five really good, really representative pictures taken per ride/event, and spend the rest of the time
doing shit instead of "documenting" other people doing shit. (Obviously, this wouldn't apply to things like races, parades, or other events that have a spectacle/spectator relationship built into them.) Also, my kitchen is filthy. Can you guys come clean it up for me?

I only take pictures so that I may have thousands or random faces for my "E-Get-Up" machine.
It essentially recreates "life-like" masks for me when I need to go steal me some Twinkies!!!

In truth I would really love to be shooting every ride I go to. But I've found it extremely difficult to carry around my d2x and lens if I put it in my bag it's not incredibly accessible or I have to worry about someone stealing my most valuable piece of hardware. So a while ago I stopped bringing it, and just participated in the fun. I kick myself all the time for that decision, but I'm relegated to it until I pick up a better ride camera, maybe a d40x will be in the works.
When I get it I plan on shooting every stupid thing you all do, and theres nothing short of beating me up and smashing my camera that will stop me, however as you all know I'm pretty good at smashing my own things. But it's what I want to do, if it ruins your fun I'm sorry you're just not trying hard enough.

I hear what you're sayin' PC; I always respect & appreciate your opinion even if I don't always agree 100%.
I can only speak for myself, but taking pictures on a ride has always been part of the experience, in fact I think I got to meet and know a lot of people because I was taking pictures, right from the first Midnight Ridazz that I went on. Being somewhat shy by nature, it gave me a way to connect with my fellow ridazz.
That said, you may have noticed that I rarely use flash. In addition to being intrusive, I find that it usually makes pictures look crappy and artificial. Additionally I try to be respectful about my picture taking. I think I have a pretty good sense of when someone doesn't want their picture taken and I act accordingly. Finally, I try to never post a picture that I think shows anybody in a less than flattering light.

There is also a major difference between people taking photo's of their friends who they ride with all the time, and having a complete stranger snap tons of flashes at you or get in your way so they can 'get' their shot. I have a problem when the balance shifts from people documenting and shooting what they are experiencing as part of the whole, to paparazzi people showing up only tto shoot photo's with no other participatory action..
Rollerzz - I really think you are inthe clear. I for one truley appreciate your photographic perspective within a community you are very much an active part of.

and with that said.. I do thinnk there needs to be WAY WAY more EDITING of the photo's posted up here.
Forget unflattering photo's - (which C'MON! Why would anyone want a picture of themselves looking wierd) - I think it's prudent to be aware of what the photo's are depicting. Not everyone wants everything they do on a ride PUBLISHED online for the world to see.
If you have a shot of someone doing sometthing maybe they don't want their BOSS or FAMILY to see, please be considerate and don't post it until you get permission from them...

Perhaps when I return to trucking, I'll invest in one of those, high-shutter speed, cameras for all the night shots.
I've taken plenty of flash shots myself and wondered from time-to-time, "Have I just signed up for a free, punch-a-size of the face".
At least I'm still glad I got the video feature as well.

I mix it up with Flash and no flash. I prefer no flash, but there are times when i want to stop the action and capture the moment with finer grain than at the higher iso's and lots of grain. Sometimes that enhances the shot but other times it can take away from the picture.
I'd like to think i don't over do it and respect people's space. I also like to capture people enjoying themselves. I think most of the pictures from the S&S ride captured that. Its hard not to have a nice photo when your smiling and i know many ridazz who've used my pictures on their myspace pages. That's part of my enjoyment -- the sharing of my work with others. I unlock my web pages so all the ridazz can grab the photos for their personal use. I've never had anyone ask me not to take their picture, if anything, its the opposite.

stevo - even with your page locked, you can steal your pictures by dragging the image up to the address bar. sort of like how everyone steals images from this site without right clicking.

Having photographers that are just there to take your pic is annoying as hell. Take whatever they want and giving nothing in return sucks big time. Seen this happen more than I care to remember. I don't mind the current crop of ridazz taking pics since they're far more part of the ride than the paparazzi.
After we went through the Doo Dah Parade some of us were at the end checking out the rest of the parade. There was this
one chick that was taking shots. I thought at first to give her a flier since I still had a bunch left over. I thought about it for maybe about 3 seconds and decided she would probably be in this group that people detest, so I passed up on giving her a flier. I watched her taking at least a hundred shots there.
One more thing, I think the current crop of photographers we have here take some pretty good pics and am glad we have them. Don't let this thread stop you from taking your shots. I would rather you take the shot than not.

You can also get the hi-res pics by changing the address on the thumbnail and smaller sized pics. There was an article on doing this in the mag 2600. It was real easy to do if you have the address of whats showing in the flickr accounts. Not sure about other sites, but I bet it's the same.

Good to have that pdf on the rights of taking photos. I've always wondered about that..
I like to take pics on the rides and barely use the flash on my shots. I'd like to say that the majority of the ridazz that put up pics on a regular basis do a great job of being selective on the pics they post. I'm sure there are occasions that someones not going to be happy but I've seen really great stuff from our ridazz....
I am curious of the pics from those that do come out and who never post them. Like the Heavy Metal ride... there was this guy right up front to the band, snapping away, and all I was thing was, "Man, those are going to be great shots!" Nope... never saw them. Where do these shots go?
I do have a question in regards to resizing pics to post on MR...
What program do most use still retain a pretty good quality pic to post. Like.. do you use Photoshop and resize to 700 pixels wide and that's it? Or there's a better way? I'm running windows and use Photoshop to resize but I feel like it looses something when I reduce and post it up. Thanks in advance..

I shoot in Large/Fine mode on my D200. I then use PS CS2 for resizing, touching up. I use "image Size" and then first, change my DPI setting to 72 (which is all you need for on the net). That automatically resizes the size of the picture. It usually gets me close to the 700 min. setting MR requires. If its less, i just change the number to 700. Then i 'save as' and the little window comes up with the quality slider. i usually keep it around 5 or 6 and that gets me to the uploadable size. Always under 1 mb.

I find the ridezz, this site, the pix, the friends I've made... it all works together. Not having the pix as part of Ridazz would be depressing!
I do take pix but I try to make 'em good ones, whatever that means. If I don't think a picture hits a few of the "elements," or at least one of them majorly, I don't even begin to photoshop it, let alone post it.
As for taking pix, if there's time to do a "portrait" shot, I'll ask you first, and yeah, I might ask you to stand this way or put your bike that way or whatever. Not trying to crash the party -- just tryin' to put out a good word in a pictorial way.
@digable, I use "Save for Web" in photoshop as the last step before posting, setting the width to anything from 700 to 1200, watching the tradeoff between file size and artifacts, shooting for 250K or smaller file size. That's an easy target with soft pix but sometimes a harder one with sharpened, detailed pix. Not sure it matters a lot: I'd think the site would have to reprocesses every pic to give a reasonably uniform presentation size and to put that sweet MR skull stripe along the bottom.

One reason people don't come here to upload photos, besides there own laziness, the photo upload utility is archaic and maddening, I believe I uploaded less than 10 files before quitting it forever.

That's why i just post a link to my cycling page. I can avoid the slow and tedious process of uploading the photos here (i have put up a couple just because) and i think the viewing experience is nicer using a dedicated site.
@PC, your posts here seem like a stifled cry for a new photo. I bet Franz could do a smashing job for a nom, nom, nom, nominal sum. I'd be happy to try for $1 less than he charges and will donate 50% to the ALC ride on your behalf. Oh, and you won't even know i took the shot or use flash.

is there any form to continue to encourage people to post on this site for those that do not have a FB... also, promote for more random pictures of more individuals and not the same 5 to 10 people.... you can almost see the generations of MR based on those images of people.... they are in almost every picture and every ride...then they vanish once they move on....

I've still got some back-logged pics that need to be posted, but one thing that could delay many is perfection.
Some of us have a variable amount of self-pride and don't want to have our reputation tarnished by photographic repetition.
So, it would probably better if everyone just took five or six pictures out of their individual stack and added it to the gallery.
Different view-points, plenty of participants at varying levels.

I have taken pics on a few rides and posted just a tiny fraction of those, mainly because
a) I don't want to be repetitive.
b) The process of uploading each photo is annoying.
It would be a lot easier if I could select five pictures and upload them all together. Sitting there picking one shot at a time and uploading it with its information, comment, year, etc... super inconvenient.
I also don't have a decent image editing program (suggestions? Has to run in Ubuntu, btw, and no, GIMP 2.x doesn't count as "decent") so editing every photo to the proper file size is a B yatch.
