Doo Dah Parade???
Thread started by P-3000 at 12.9.07 - 10:22 am

How about signing up for the Doo Dah parade as the Midnight ridazz?

Has it been done before?

Is it already locked in?

It would be kinda cool and sort of sticking the middle finger at Pasadena for being anti bike. What ever came of that?

Its a fucking freak fest.
It has our name all over it.

I'm pictureing a team of tall bikes
follwed by a squad of bmxs and fixies doing freestyle.

Then a collection of different people dressed to represent different rides we have done this year or since the get go.

then in the back a big slow moving mass of ridazz.

maybe we can somebody to go in drag as a SMPD clown cop
and write us all tickets one at a time throughout the parade.

I am so down for this shit.
yippity fucking doo-dah.

I've always wanted to build a huge joint, something about 20-25 feet long and have it on wheels and pulled by bike. The caption would something like, "Solution to our world's conflicts".

Anyways yeah, lets do this. I've been in the parade before and really you can do this gorilla style. We would be a legit entry, but alot of the ridazz can avoid this per person fee. I never even knew they had a per person fee!

THIS JUST IN (er, a nano-second later than the first "This Just in"): Doo Dah Non-Conformity Lives!
Wednesday, 31 October, 2007 (BOO!) - Doo Dah staff

WHAT: Doo Dah’s 31st Occasional Parade celebrates the post-holiday season in its typically loud, irreverent style. The twisted sister to Pasadena’s prim and proper Rose Parade, again sends up a woolly range of mischiefs, grounded superheroes, political pundits, homegrown satirists, art car inventors, and other bohemian frolickers.

More than 100 parade entries will unfurl their freak flags before an anticipated 45,000 spectators, like the Cheney Hunting Club, Bastard Sons of Lee Marvin, La Machina Candida, Tequila Mockingbird, and Jazz Funeral for Pluto. Where else in Southern California will you find the Hairy Krishnas, Howdy Krishnas and the real Hare Krishnas rolled into one street party?

WHEN: SUNDAY, JANUARY 20TH, stepping off at 11:30am.

WHERE: The Pasadena Doo Dah Parade takes place in the Old Pasadena historic district. Convenient parking is located in structures on every block adjacent to the parade route. Metro Gold Line stops nearest to the Parade are Del Mar and Memorial Park stations. Lawn chairs encouraged!

COST: Absolutely free!!

Pasadena Doo Dah Parade

I'd be delighted to throw down $10 for this.
We should get organized.
Have a meeting or whatever.
This could be fucking epic.
I am sure the $10 will turn a lot of people off but
I think we could get a reasonable sized crowd.

In nome ways it might make sense to get smaller groups to organize together and handle their own planning and fee paying ... then perhaps we could plan to ride in succession.

ie.
- Tall bike crew meets organizes and decides what to do.
- fixies meet and organize
- clown meet and organize
- ninjas meet and organize
etc etc.

perhaps this would prevent this frome being too unweildy
the downside is that it would require a bunch of different people to step up as leaders. the upside is that it could potentially be very organized.

Ok what do I put as the "estimated number of marchers"?

I will have to pay at least half the amount if I fill out and turn in the form.

Is there any midnite rida that is a part of an org than can be our front that has an account we can deposit in or something like that. I think we need some level of central org. ? maybe?

there is a deadline.

any rich midnite rida who can front the money?

I will pay mine and another's $20. I'm far from rich.

maybe a quick meeting at the Pasadena critical mass? or the punk rock ride? oopps chances are I can't make either of those.
maybe at sin and sprockets china town ride. I for sure can make that ride.

I'm excited. but have no clue what I'm doing, barely know anyone here. but I'm down for this.

P-3000, This is your event. We will help you. Focus on what you need.

1. First - Post it on the Calendar (Add a Ride) - don't worry, you can edit it as we go. Get the basic Details, Who What When Where Why.

2. SIGN UP LIST -
make a list of people on this thread who say they are going to participate and will give you 10$ ( Don't worry, people will trust you, if they don't then they are really not the type to enjoy this sort of thing anyways). At this Fridays event, we will walk around with the sign up list and collect money from the folks that want to participate, and get their email. Hopefully we can come up with a decent number of folks on the list soon. When's the deadline?

3. GROUP IDEAS - Document what peoples ideas are so others can join in or help do those things. Let people do what they want to do. But get people to work together on their ideas (for example: Allan "User1" wants to make a 30 foot joint. I'm probably going to want to help him, put me on the Big ass Joint group. Tall Bike/ Freak Bike Folks. BMXers. Bike Dancers. Bicycle Bells. Clowns, Skeletons, Hippies, Cubbiez, Etc, Etc..That way we can kind of make this work like Trickmilla was saying earlier.

Email me or ask us if you need any other help.
joe.borfo@gmail.com

Let's keep working on making this happen.

Ride On!

Hey Borfo,

Welcome to Team World Peace!!!

Our team has been hitting the internet the last three days gathering supplies and soliciting donations. We have sent out requests for some 30 foot long rolling papers from Zig Zag. We should be getting a response back any day now. We are having trouble finding 2,000 pounds of weed, so if you have a source, let me know!

Do you know how to roll a big joint?

I was going to use a fluffa to lick the paper. It's a proven scientific fact that they salivate 60% more than a normal human.

I've organized an L.A. Post Carbon entry in the Doo Dah Parade a couple of times. They waived the fee for us, so it was free for whoever joined us. If we were to frame Midnight Ridazz as a service to the community, then we could probably get the fee waived.

I don't know if it's too late to sign up at this point though.

Of course there's sometimes people that crash the parade, not that I'm suggesting we do that.

perhaps we can look into some sort of fee waiver or discount.
or perhaps a fund raiser of some sort?

The pay pal idea is great.

Is this going to be an "offishall" MR parade representation?
RB any thoughts on this?

Personally I am lacking time and mental space b4 the Toy ride.
But yes! I like the direction this is going.

Yo Borfo ... great ideas.

As far as flyers etc.
Whatever we can do to get this is people's minds that this is going to happen and be loads of fun ... lets do it.

I was thinking this would be a great way to increase the masses on MR. We could have 1/4 sheet fliers espousing the virtues of bike riding on one side. On the other side we could have a wicked skull with a snake coming out of an eye socket and the MR website on the bottom. We can hand these out to every man, woman, and easily malleable child on the route!

That would raaaawwwwwwwwkkkkkk!!!!

I want to do this too. I'd like to go as an official entry though... I like that idea because it is like 'bizzaro midnight ridazz'

I also like the idea because it flys in the face of Pasadena and is a cool pr opportunity.

I will pledge admission for myself and 4 other ridazz if someone gets their shit together and continues to organize this.

Call me by January 20th if it's on,

(213) 280-4214

and I'll eat macaroni and cheese to pay for my $50 share.

Also, I can go as a french maid to celebrate the MR Francophile ride.

Talked to Doo Dah reps today, they said just send in the application and we can pay up on day of.

So it is on!

They heard of Midnight Ridazz and love the fact that we are new to the parade, that we are a big loose community, we know how to have fun, and want to be part of their party.

They suggested just telling our peeps to dress up or show off any issue that is important to us personally so we can show our diversity.

What is the next step?

Paypal? or we all just trust we will all show up with money day of.

I had said earlier that I would love to see a bunch of mini groups organizing like bmx/ freestyle crews, tall bikes, ninjas, office folk, lowriders, heavy metal ridazz etc. what ever people are into ,but I think it would be super dope for people to get a cross sampling of what we do by seeing us loosley organized into groups.

Of course this is not how we exist in our normal element but i think it would look really cool in a parade setting.

Bring your kids!

My daughters have been in the Doo Dah parade several times and my 7 year-old is excited about entering again. She wants to help pimp-out my bicycle cargo trailer and ride on it during the parade.

If we bring some young kids - the audience will love it. Here's some pictures from when I was in the parade in 2004:
http://www.lapostcarbon.org/doodah.html
My younger daughter is the TV, she though of the idea and made the TV herself (with help to cut the opening).

How many of you can bring kids to the parade?

According to the Doo Dah website, Reverend Billy, of the School of Stop Shopping, will be at the parade. http://www.pasadenadoodahparade.info/

Why not tip our hats to Billy at the parade?

Midnight Ridazz - more fun than shopping

Midnight Ridazz - Free fun for the masses

Midnight Ridazz - the fast-track to consumerism recovery

Any other ideas?

RB, I met Billy on a couple of occasions. He's a sincere dedicated guy. Perhaps you don't want him to make a living because he's anti-consumerist, but he's done much to shed light on the dark side of corporations like Starbucks and Wallmart. Also, he provides a much needed critique on the problems that come with consumerism.

True, it's not what's Midnight Ridazz is about - but still I sure most Ridazz would agree Midnight Ridazz is more fun that shopping! And it's definitely not a consumerist type of activity (not for most anyways).

Keep it up Rev. Billy!

There is a pimp my ride event on the 19th to get your bike ready for the parade the next day. I hope to make it to that.

Everyone just be who you are or wish to represent but have fun doing it. This is who the Ridazz are to me, a group where I can be me, but with a group who doesn't give a crap about anything other than having a good time on a bike, looking out for other ridazz, and having fun. Yes there are lefties in here, and some not so lefties, so what ,we are entering as the Midnight Ridazz, all stripes and types on bikes.

Allan,

I figured out that I am riding tern's minibike and pulling a trailer with a lightweight pole which will support the front large end of the Giant Joint. The tapered end which will be reachable to puff by any rider will have to be on wheels as well, but I can't figure out yet how to devise that...

We need engineers and scientists on the G.J.B.C.

Joe Borfo
01.4.08 - 4:11 pm

reply

What you need is a two wheel mini-trailer to attach to the joint near the smokin end. It would need to be about 4.5 feet high to allow for easy smoking by peds.

My suggestion would be to use a peice of 1/2" rod about 18" long, you could stick a wheel on each end, held in place by shaft colars. I happen to have a bunch of 1/2" ID shaft collars. Then use a peice of 1" EMT tubing for the upright. Drill a half inch hole near one end to slide over the axle. At about 4.5' up, bend it at a 90 degree angle torwards the bike giving a long section to lash onto the joint, preferably with strips of hemp or tobacco.

Fasten a 8' peice of sturdy bamboo to the rear triangle of a bike. Lash the joint near the top of the bamboo. Make sure there is room for the rider.

Refer to the drawing.

Eric

And, of course the joint would need to be pretty sturdy - perhaps a long piece of bamboo inside the joint.

thinkpeace

I just read Borfo's post about the mini-bike trailer with the large pole.

Change my design above, so the front of the joint would attach to this pole. Otherwise it should work fine.

My daughters have been in the parade several times now. My 7 year-old is looking forward to it. She wants to decorate her bike and ride it in the parade.

She's informed my today that she hates cars (as I drove her in rush hour traffic). Maybe she's gonna start stuffing potatoes in tailpipes like Katlin and her friends because their parents wouldn't let them walk home from school.

Latest info:

The Midnight Ridazz are in the running to be thee FIRST group to kick off the parade!!!!!!!!

I told them that at the least we should have 100 ridazz to the possibility of 200 or 300. SO they thought that we should be first so we don't get held up by anyone in front of us and it would be a great scene to see so many bikes. They love the idea of the radios too.

I really hope you look up this parade and decide to come if you haven't already, it really is that much fun.

We should meet up at 10:30am ready to roll first out at 11:30am. We need to collect the $10 entry fee and get everyone their participant sticker.

GROUPS within our group????

We have the 30 ft joint going.

What other groups are rolling? Clowns? Pillow Fighters? Warriors?

I'm still debating on Mexican Wrestler mask or Calavera face paint.

Your group is going to be prominently positioned in

Please ask (wherever you

You will have a whole block at the front and this is

I thought we where the lamest part of the parade.

You saw LaHar? I never saw him.

The parade itself was bitchen. I don't think we added too much to it.
Those that participated, did their best.

Alex and the geometric shapes,
The cowboy and his lady on the tandem.
Borfo, being borfo.
Harry's chicken suit.
Gas mask guy,
JJ and friend

and

Everybody who dressed up really added to what little we had.
and even those who just showed up.

It is shame that more didn't show, that might have made the difference.

It made me realize, its not called Midnight RIdazz, because we like to come out at 10 in the morning. We night people.

Much love to all who came out.

alright, the pictures do look pretty bitchen.

Yes it was fun doing it, even though I thought we looked lame compared to all the other parade contestants.

Don't feel bad sexy.
There are several reasons there was no greater participation.
1. Time as you said.
2. Cost. People here aren't used to pay for participating in an event. I saw it in San Francisco where MR would not pay $3 to go to the after party but hang outside on the sidewalk instead. We had just travelled 300 miles and people refused to pay $3 bucks to party with the locals. MR will save every last penny to spend on booze. Anything else is a waste.
3. Spectacle-Spectator relationship. MR do not perform in front of audiences. If anyone wants to see MR they better ride with them. To see is to be (2C=2B)TM.

My personal excuse for not joining you?
Had to take my son to the airport.

There were like only 4 people who paid. The rest of us just crashed it.

Midnight Ridazz was the front of the Parade Yo! You guys missed out again on a rare experience!

sexy, certainly many entries were more interesting than ours, but we certainly were not the lamest! We were having fun, and people could see that.

I though it was fun to see the young girls get off their bike/trailer to attack the Ridazz with pillows.

I had fun at the parade. There were alot of entrance for this two hour plus parade. The organizers gave us a great chance to highlight MR and really we dropped the ball. Yeah the ridazz that were there did a great job and were having tons of fun, but too few to people what we're about. Hopefully next year we're on top of this. Many of us could have just crashed this would have been way cool to see 100 plus ridazz out front of this parade.

My fav entrant was bizarre colorful group.

The best part was by far going around a second time and interacting with other parade entries from our bikes. It would have been great to do it a third. But our poor tandem's tires got all gunked up with marshmallows we ran over. Anyone have ideas for how to get all the crud off?

Yeah, I used windex and a flat head screw driver to get that gunk out of my tires.

"20 foot Joint?" - I got too baked and didn't finish it, just like you guys couldn't get up to make the parade. It was fun anyways. Ridazz started the parade. BBD's Amp was loud enough to get everyone chanting and screaming. Fun Fun.

Next year we will do the Giant Spliff.

Our 30 foot joint was a no show. Hopefully we're on top it next year and be able to break it out.

Thanks to all who came out, it was very fun.

Next year I hope to see a lot more Ridazz.

My gf noticed how the majority of the entrants were in the 'older range' she guessed the fun loving, don't take your self so seriously, attitude skipped some generations.

The young pillow fighters and our dancing bunny were the best!

Thank you, thank you, thank you..

RIDE ON!!!!!!

Not to talk shit (honest, I swear) but I suspect that it's the "willing to get up early in the morning and pay ten bucks to ride a bike" attitude that is unevenly distributed among the age brackets.
